Yes song the expression totaly coinsides with the movie. MSV use to tell his singers to sing from stomach to give more "bhavam" to the song.
In kambam emandhan the song sound more like a "kindal" or circastic (my spelling might be wrong here)...spb renders it perfectly.

Good observation, Ragapiriyan!!! I will list other songs in the same category in future postings.
I was listening to "Utharavindi uLLe vaa unnidam aasai konden vaa". The pallavi is totally in Sivaranajani known for its dampening effect. But no, you won't feel it in this song. It is joyful Sivaranjani this time. The Charanam deviates from Sivaranjani without sounding abrupt and continues till TMS makes his "classical Sivaranjani" entry with "Boomiyil Maanida Jenmam eduthathu". What is noteworthy is how the charanam that TMS sings (purely classical) is linked back to the Pallavi (pacy and freaky).

Ragapiriyan, some more for you. Note the culmination of melody in the line "Thannaithedi engum uyirgaL urugum vaarthai amma amma" in the song "ChellakkiLigaLaam PaLLiyile" with a grand orchestra arrangements. Glad to note that there is another dreamer in this forum who brings more of heart into play than intellect while listening to music.

Sriram:
Yes, different people look for different aspects in music. Like you,
I do belong to that group which looks for fine emotional aspects in
songs (of course, combined with good melody and music). I have heard
some people say.. 'I can listen to MSV/TKR, MSV tunes once or twice;
yes they are nice, but then they start getting very boring.' Initially
I used to think: 'What is wrong with these guys?' But then, I have
learnt to appreciate the fact that different people look for different
things in music; it is very possible that there are many who find that
MSV's songs has some sweet melody and that's all. But you and I think
very differently. Karthi, for example feels many of Raja's interludes
to be a tremendous deviation from the main tune; but many others feel
that Raja's interludes are innovative and special and add great value
to the tune. One can endlessly argue (I have also been drawn into such
stuff before) but all that will stop if one realizes the simple fact
that different people are excited by different elements of music. You
won't believe it, but I went with someone to see 'Karnan' (more than
20 years ago) and his comment after seeing that movie for the first time
was: this movie would have been great if only so many irritating songs
were not there! I think that sums up what I am trying to say.
In this emotional aspect, I feel MSV really excels. Songs such as those you
have mentioned (sonnadhu, chellakiLigalaam) and such as 'kaNNan vandhaan
angE kaNNan vandhaan' of Ramu are excellent examples. There is a LOT of
material on such MSV songs that one can write in the 'Emotional Tunes..'
permanent thread; but there is very little time for me to do this!
When I attempt to play some of these MSV's fine emotion-filled songs on KB,
I find that it is not at all easy. MSV seems to love loitering around one
swaram at a time quite a bit, with slightly varying swarams & gamakas coming
in quick variation that make the identification as well as KB playing
very difficult. (I do appreciate that MSV conveys nice emotions this "small
variations" method.) Overall, if you plot frequency versus time and look at
MSV's tunes, I think most of them will look very analogue-ish, i.e.,
fine slow variations about a single frequency, and also, jumps in swarams
are not too sharp. Contrast this with typical tunes of Raja. Raja's
swarams are much sharper and easier to trace, and also he is adventurous
in making big jumps in frequencies while keeping the tune sweet. It looks
to me that, if you just do such a frequency analysis of the tunes of these
two greats, you are sure to find that each has a "signature". Most often
you can simply listen to a tune and immediately say who the Md is. It would
be very very interesting to discuss such aspects in a new thread.. "Tune
signatures of MDs: what makes one's tunes different from another's".
If experts such as you, Shashi, Srikanth, Murali, Geetha, Shankar, and RR
discuss this kind of stuff, it would be a feast for those like me.

MR. KK,
I think "kangal Engey Nenjamum Engey", is scored by G.Ramanathan (I'm not sure), but definitely not by MSV.

guys,
Is "Neram Iravu Neram" by MSV or Vedha? There's a great jazz interlude in it. It's also one of the best renditions by LRE.

Raj! Sorry! I think you need to have atleast a bit of what you don't have (and what we all sure have) to get your heart to do what it does for us. So, sorry again...out you go! :-)

Perhaps you can lend me a bit, Karthi, if you have sufficient amount for yourself, that is :)...And what pleasure you seem to derive in me going out! If despite lacking the 'stuff' you've got I can drive you to such limits, imagine what can I do witha little of that 'stuff'! Perhaps, Godis being kind to you:)

Karthi & Raj,
I am afraid Ragapiriyan and I have decided to tighten the rules for entry in this club. Initial screening will be done by RP and me and you will be subjected to a scanning process to trace out any remaining traces of grey matter. Just kiddin'.
For the benefit of "Raga-minded". Some rare raagas used by MSV.
Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen - Gopika Vasantham
The only other TF song I have heard in this raag is "Thodi raagam paadava" (KJY and Chitra) composed by Chandra Bose in some god-forsaken Vijay Kanth movie.
Kasikku pogum Sanyai - Purna Kambhoji
Oru NaaL iravu - RasikaPriya (72nd MeLakartha)

Hi,
Sl : How about discussing MSV & Kalyanavasantham
Msv & Thilang Also MSV & Bharathi songs.
I feel MSV has done more kalayanavasantham in different forms.
Thanks for the info on gopika vasantham, I thought it was sd or hindolem.

The only difference between GV and Hindolam is "P" and hence the similarity. RP , it is all in "Ragapravaham". Just play it out on a KB and refer the book, that is all.
Srikanth, coming to Thilang, Sindhu Bhairavi , Hamir Kalyani, Behaag , NataBhairavi etc I guess all MSV had to do was yawn and lo! You have a melody. If you have noticed, "Anubavam puthumai" in Kaathalikka neramillai has its Pallavi and Anupallavi set to Keeravani. The Charanams are totally in Natabhairavi. Imagine the same raga (NB) being used for "Yaar sirithaal yenna ingu Yaar azhuthaal yenna". "Pavazhakkodiyile muthukkaL" is, I think set to the same raga. His Charukesi catered to various situations , pallavi and anu pallavi of "Ammamma keLadi thozhi", "muthu nagaye unnai naan ariven". Note the subtle change in tune when TMS sings "Kaalazhagu paarthaal deivathirku karuNai endroru peyar etharku".
His usage of Thilang was for various moods, eg :-
Azhagan muruganidam aasai vaithen (classical)
Paalootti vaLartha kiLi (melancholy). His KV songs that immediately spring to mind are "Kaanchi pattuduthi kasthuri pottu vaithu" and "Ninnaye rathiyendru ninaikkirenadi", both sung by KJY. Will try and unearth more.
