In hollywood there are no songs. If at all there is any like in Musical movies, those songs are sung by Actors themselves, we had My Fair Lady, Singing in the Rain, Sound of Music recently Moulen Rouge. Usually they use "Third Party" songs like from Pop singers. But they gave so much importance to BGM. That's why movies like "Good Bad and the Ugly", "Mission", "Untouchables", " Beverley Hills Cop", "Titanic", "Mission Impossible"... how often tamil movies could come up with memorable BGMs. "Mouna Raagam" had good BGM. Recently "12B" had good BGM. "Nooravathu Naal" had good BGM. "Dalapathi" had good BGM. "Roja" had good BGM. Any other movies??

Appoorva Sagotharargal is a fine xmple for BGM and fantastic songs and the way they blend into the storyline. by the way, a dozen Hollywood bgms or themes can be found in one IR film, simply look at the interludes, so many phrases. 6 songs * 3, you got 18 different themes for 18 different hollywood movies! but, whatever said I am yet to find a perfect musical like Sound Of Music from MangaThoppu or MullaThottam(like hollywood, equivalent word for Chennai film centre. for kerala - ThengaThoppu, for Bollywood mabye Hollybood sounds better.).

I have seen lots of mallu movies where BGM is pretty good. A true music composer not the one who scores good songs. Even Britney Spears sold like 13 million copies of her One More Try album. We in India appreciate the MDs based on their ability to give good songs. It is a wrong scale. James Horner( Titanic, Beautiful Mind), John Williams ( So many movies ), Ennio Morricone ( Good bad ugly, Mission, Untouchables, Malena...) they never scored any songs for heaven's sake. But their music is so soothing to heart. But Indian MDs completely overlook this aspect. "Mouna Raagam" is a great example of what BGM can do to a movie. I saw that movie again and again mostly for its BGM. Another movie is "Johnny". Especially where Rajini and Sridevi get to know each other. "Azagan" has very good BGM especially during the meetings of Geetha and Mammooty. Without right BGM most movies will be forgotten. "Salangai Oli" is another perfect example of great BGM can make great Movies. During the scene when Jayapradha gives the invitation to Kamal, he finds his name in it. It is one of the best movie scene i have ever watched in a movie. Music was from top of the drawer. These days movies are highly forgettable mostly because of poor BGM.

Bombay, Thiruda Thiruda and Kannathil Muthamitaal had amazing BGMs!
another film that comes to mind is Dalapathi.
it's a coincidence that all are MR films. and he insists on using silence to good effect, In the place of the supposed-to-be-creepy music!
