hi fellow DFers. no word has so influenced tamil film and music the way Kannamma has. right from the day bharatiyar's Kannamma song was set to tune in Kappal Oattiya Thamizhan, it has featured in a great many songs, film titles and situations. why not list out the various instances of Kannamma and try and find out why she is an abiding icon of Tamil film kulture. anyone game?

I recently bought a CD-Bharathiar songs-unnikrishnan.The CD was just too good. The songs are sung well by unnikrishnan.Anybody who has inclination towards carnatic music and towards Bharathi should get this 1.This am sure will blow your mind.(Guys who aren't that much interested in CM ...TRY THIS..this will give you a great start to app CM.Also most of the songs have been in TFM).
As i said all of the songs are good but 1 song that i listen too atleast 1 every day is...
Thertha karayinile KANNAMA senbagathotathinale.
The way Unnikrishnan renders this song in particular makes the CD worth buying.
Another KANNAMA song that comes to my mind is
Ninaye rathiyendru ninakirenadi KANNAMA..
particular listen crefully to the way KJ sings this song..the lines...
ponnaye nigartha maeni..ninayae ninayatha sayul.
it just too melodious.
The very thought that Bharathi wrote all his songs and rendered them in suitable ragas tell us how talented he should have been.Bharathi impresses me more than mahatma..if anybody feels the same..please let me know i would like to discuss more.

I am also a big fan of Bharathiar's lyrics and ragas. However, I cannot comment on your statement about the Mahatma because I haven't listened to any of the Mahatma's compositions!

Sandeep - well, some analysis (if u can call it that ) on kannammaa.
I think its just the way u call your beloved. just like honey, or sweetheart, or, even sweetpea, whatever:-).
Its also similar to why the youngest son is called 'chinna' in andhra, why the youngest daughter is called 'paappa' in the interiors of TN, Its like shopkeepers calling you 'thambi' or 'thangachi' even though u are'nt related.
So, my idea is, Bharathiyar probably had a sweetheart, who was named, or who he called, Kannamma, and the other lyricists cant think of, for some reason, any other name more romantic than that, or they just want to adhere to the age-old, whatever!

can anyone translate the song 'suttum vizhi chudar' by bharatiyar? though i dont understand the words, they sound so sweet. how many languages can you say that about? how right bharatiyar was when he said no language on earth is sweeter than tamil.

Thus wrote Bharati on
How many Crores of limitless pleasure ?
Challenge to Yama the lord of death
Demands to Lord Ganesh
I am giving below the three poems from among the many of the most beautiful creations of Bharati
On limitless pleasures
“Eththanai Kodi Inbam Vaiththai Engal Iraiva Iraiva Iraiva Oh!”
(How many crores of pleasures you have given us Oh our Lord ..Lord Oh Lord)
“Chiththinai Achiththudan Inaiththai Anghu Cherum Imbudhathin Viyanulagamaiththai”
(You have created knowledge and ignorance together and in that creation of yours you have set the wonderful beauty in all those five basics Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Sky)
“Aththanai Ulagamum Vannak Kalanjiam Ahap pala pala Nallazhugagal Amaiththai”
(That world in its entirety is a beautiful and colourful collection So you have made it in many splendors)
“Mukthi Enroru Nilai Samaiththai Athil Muzhuvathaiyum Unarum Unarvu Amaiththai”
(You have set Salvation as the final level and in achieving that you have made me realize every thing that is perceivable)
“Bhakthi Enroru Nilai Vaghuththai Engal Parama Parama Parama “
(You have also set devotion as another route Oh our Almighty !)
On fear of death
Bharati also challenges Yama (the lord of death) as under
“Kaala Enn Kaalaruge Vada Sarrte Unnai Mithikkiren”
(Oh Yama !Will you come near my foot ! I shall just step over you)
Let us come over the fear of death and enjoy till the end
Demand to Lord Ganesh
The great poet also writes about the boon he demands from Lord Ganesh the foremost God every one approaches before commencing any activity
“ Enakku Vendum Varangalai Isaipen Nee Kelai Ganapathi”
( Oh Ganapathi ! Will you listen to my requirement of Boons)
“Manadhil Sanchalam Illaamal En Mathiyil Iruley Thonramal”
(With out having any of the anxieties and with out the darkness encompassing my mind)
“ Naan Ninaikkum Pozuthu Nin Mouna Nilai Vandhida Nee seyal Vendum”
(When ever I desire at that moment you shall give me your state of silence-Nirvana)
“Kanakkum Selvam , Nooru Vayathu , Evaiyum Thara Nee Kadavaye”
(Till such time I desire the state of yours it is your duty to give me the heavy material world and 100 years to enjoy )
