Pleasant Surprise

I would like this thread to serve as a place where people can share pleasant surprises—something entirely unexpected but good in a song. Please don’t get into an artist’s entire collection. Try and identify a single element in a song that totally surprised you and discuss it.

  Let me elaborate. Recently I was casually listening to some 80s songs while doing some reading, when the CD shuffled to “Poadu Thandhaanathoam”, an IR song from a Vijayakanth movie. At first the song didn’t make much of an impression on me, but I let it play on just for SPB’s spirited singing. Then during one of the interludes, saxophone came out of nowhere and totally surprised me in a good way. So I listened keenly to the rest of the song waiting to hear the sax in the next interlude, but this time it was a guitar interlude and then a while later the sax again. Before I could digest it all the song was over. Needless to say, I went back and replayed the song several times and utterly enjoyed it.

  tabla leading the last lines of the stanza in pani vizhum malarvanam.
  the sudden breaking of orchestar into WCM type notes towards the end of first interludes in pani vizhum iravu from mauna ragam.
  transition from folk to carnatic in paadariyen.
  transition from dappanguthu to devotional in rakkamma kaiya thattu.
  the starting of varadhu vandha nayagan-starts as sanskrit devotional no.
  the full modern concerto is full of surprises-going thru carnatic,wcm,jazz etc
  and poove ,sempoove-again very unpredictable orchestration.
  all the above are IR nos.was it writer sujatha who said tha in every IR no there will be a small 'achariyam'?

  When the soundtrack of Guna was released, I was surprised to see the twists and turns (even in genre) in the song, 'Unnai naanariven'.
  The use of sound-effects (fan, voices, remember, 'varum varum varum...mm)), the use of Saarangi, a Hindustaani style alaap of raga Kiravani and towards the end, a rendition of the song in the mother's voice (Varalakshmi's gaNeer kural).. it was one song full of surprises.
  And it was very well used in the film too. In fact it had an additional number thrown in.. some Telugu folkish tune, 'Oyilalo, oyilalo'..
  
  'Raja Rajathi Rajan Indha Raja' from 'Agni Nakshatram' initially appealed to me for its picturisation and the rhythm (as I heard it for the first time while watching the movie) and only later did I realise that the MD had not used any instruments other than rhythmic/percussion instruments and chorus..
  Similarly, ARR's 'RAsAthee' was a pleasant surprise for his use of voices in harmony.
  
  Another song that had me guessing all the time as to what will come next is:
  The way the stanza starts after the pallavi and the subsequent interlude in the 'Poovizhi VAsalile' song, 'Oru KiLiyin Thanimayile'... it was in a surprisingly different beat and tempo. Was Amazing. I had to rewind and enjoy it a second and a third time..
  
  Similarly, I just loved the seemingly common but brilliant rhythm play in the song, 'VanamellAm Shenbagapoo VAnellAm Kunkumapoo'.. in the words, 'KaiyOdu Edu Silambu KalandhAda Nimirnthezhumbu'.. the beat was the same, but there was a slight delay in the beginning that gets adjusted at the end... brilliant.

  in the album "Nothing but Wind", i forgot the song title, there is a transition from a solo flute to a suddenly jarring but nice jamming of instruments...
  
  but the best among all is in the album "How to name it" .. the song "do anything" has a very very very good suprise... its when the sounds of birds and keyboards give way to a sudden outburst of joyous shehnai!!!!!! lovely.... really makes me forget myself everytime i hear it... as though there is a waterfall in my heart... hats off to that piece...

  The song `Ayiram thAmarai mottukkaLE' had a pack of surprise elements when I heard for the first time...starting with a classical rhythm, changing over to folk chorus and incredible sounds in the first interlude... but the real pinnacle was yet to come, when I just thought the song is over...the great humming by SJ when the pallavi is sung in the end...thanAnanA...thanana nanana nanana...goose pimples...then and each time I hear this song since then...

  the starting of the song nadhiyil aadum thoranam is one of my 2 cents...
  
  a smooth, slow, beautiful, superlative, jaltharangam-ish sound and tabla taking over after the completion of beautiful rendition of a sloka from soundarya lahari by IR...
  
  the drawback in this plesantary is that it made that part of my cassette to wear out...
  
  another bid is starting instrumental(guitar/keyboard??) piece of the song sambO siva sambO u can say that its the theme music of that song..gets repeated in the end also...oh! man what a beauty it is...short fast paced...

  A few aacharyams which I enjoy every time I hear them...
  
  1. In "yaarukku maappiLLai yaarO" at the end of the first stanza where PS repeats the last line of the 1st stanza, and before she starts again with "endha paarvai pattu..", there is a set of beats that sounds "dchin dchin"! And as one might guess it doesn't repeat during the 2nd stanza.
  
  2. In the same note, in "thangap padhakkathin mElE", exactly just right before the beginning of the 3rd stanza by PS, there's a very fast and quick "beats" at which I become awestruck even to this day, thanks to MSV.
  
  3. In "unnidathil ennai koduthEn" the interlude after the 1st stanza - where the shenai that sounds like "kalyaana naathaswaram" goes on and on only to change and blend very naturally with guitars - into the main tune of the song.
  
  4. In "adadada maamarak kiLiyE" before Janaki repeats the 1st line, there is "violin izhaippu" that mesmerizes me!
  
  5. And there's another "violin izhaippu" in the 1st stanza of "Love birds love birds" - it's so crisp and unexpected!

  The second interlude in "vaa sakhi vaa sakhi" from arasiyal by Vidhyaasagar. when i heard that rock guitar part first i thought it didnt fit well. on hearing it a few times i was surprised to see how VS has fitted the guitar part well with the song. a novel attempt, well executed.
  
  1947-earth theme - it starts off slowly with sarod(?) and then violins burst out from nowhere. and then again the solo instrument playing the lead tune and then again the violins take over with chrous in the background. IMO, one of the best instrumental pieces of ARR.

  Siva sankari Sivanandalahari by a Classical vidwan like Seerkazhi Govindarajan to sing a totally Hindustani Classical number is really a pleasant surprise!
