  Its from the movie "Or Iruvu" (1950). Screenplay by C. N. Annadurai. Cast: TK Shanmugam, Lalitha, A Nageswara Rao, BS Saroja and produced by AVM. Lyrics: Bharatidasan and set to music by R Sudarsanam. Singers were MS Rajeshwari and Verma.

  Addendum- Or Iravu came in 1951. AVM Chettiar is said to have paid Bharathidasan Rs.1000/- for using the song in his film. Verma, who sang along with MSR, was a visually handicapped singer.
  
  This song was already popularised on stage by the great Dhandapani Desikar- it was he who set it to Desh Raga.

  I have heard Desikar s voice explaining why he chose Desh and not Atana.He sings the song in Atana as well and finishes with " Eppadi Paadina Kuzhanthai oodi poidum".

  Saravanan, Tamil sevai irandu ( & onru for that matter) used to give credit to PA Modi for this song. i am sure about this because i remember asking my father about this singer & how come a non tamil singer was used in a movie made by dravidian stalwarts at that point of time.

  Vengayam, 'Thunbam nergayil' is definitely by MSR and Verma- I have heard MSR's interview, wherein she mentioned Verma's name. TA Mothi's voice was distinct- he was a remarkable singer, sadly underutilised and now totally forgotten.
  
  Btw, Verma too was a non-tamil- he was a Telugu singer.

  saravanan,I know when two people You & Vicky can't both be wrong. But TA Modhi's name was mentioned whenever the song was played By Radio Ceylon. maybe it was the case of a miostake in the gramaphone company once again. surprising considering this was an AVM movie. Re the Dravidian bit I brought it up only because I had asked the q to my father for this very song and that is how I remembered it. and I have more than apassing interest in Barathidasan. we are from the same place!
