How do new songs fare compared to old songs in the areas of Meaning(Karuthhu) Ryme and Imagination(Karpanai). I dare you to come up with new songs that are better or equal to old songs.

These are the few songs that comes to my mind immediately
Edhilum Ingu Iruppan - Bharathi
Kalli adi Kalli - Nandha
Nee thaan En Desiya Geetham - Paarthale Paravasam
Paatu Solli - Azhaghi.
These are few of the new songs. But there are a lot more in Enga Ooru Paatu Kaaran, Kadalora Kavidhikal (a plenty of IR - Various Lyricist combinations). Many of the songs can be compared equal to or better than some old songs.
This is an indefinite posting. But a Song By Song comparision taking a situation in hand would spill a lot.

Venki/Youth,
Thanks for responding. I am defending new songs (after 1970 ?)in a patti manram ...so would love to have suggestions as to what new songs have meaning/ryme/imagination.....
I have to counter old songs like....
Parthen Sirithen
Pakkathil Azhaithen
Atthi kai, kai kai
Alang kai ven-nilave
Nadhi yil vilayadi, Kodiyil Thali seevi etc
New songs would be Vaira Muthu ira compared to Kanna dhasan.

Getting tough Rangudu! hmmmm.... I'm thinkin.
I had sometimes back thought about a comparision between the songs
Unnai Arindhaal. and Unaal Mudium Thambi.
Modern day songs have touched various aspects of life as mentioned by d (@ 210.186.42.203). Apart from love / hate / pathos / advice kind of songs these days we have a lot.
for example: Letter writing songs :) Kanmani Anbodu, Nalam Ariya Aaval
Self Realization:
Kannin Maniye Kannin Maniye Poraatama. Nallathor Veenai (Marupadium), Oora therinju kitten Ulagam Puringu kitten(padikkaathavan),
Emotional Item Songs:
Vandhade Kungumam, Chinna Chinna Vanna Kuiyl, Malargale Malargale, Chinna Kuiyl Paadum Paatu, Naalai Ulagam Illai endraanaal.
It is only in the later years we could hear better Duets. Duet songs have developed in leaps and bounds in later years (Kan manie pesu, Kan manie kaadhal enbathu, Kal Thondri Man Thondri, Anbe Anbe Kollathe etc.)

I am convincing the 'Naduvar' to open up the channel and not restrict to just karuthu and karpanai....This way I can talk about music/dance seq etc. A song is more than karuthu and karpanai...is it not ?

New songs are more creative I would say, in both Music and Meaning.

Please read this interview with Music Director 'Oh! Podu' Bharadwaj:
http://www.rediff.com/entertai/2003/jan/16bhad.htmParticularly his comments how lyrics, meaning etc. came to be 'murdered'.
Can anyone hold a candle to Kannadasan, Papanasam Sivan, etc.? Or MDs like GR, Dakshinamoorthi, KVM? Listen to "Satti Suttathada" from Aalayamani -- see if you can catch the references to Advaita. How is that for philosophy? :-)
Not that the old songs were lacking in fun. Listen to the peerless MKTB singing the duet "Sedi Maraivile Oru Poonkodi" (which film is it?), for instance, or MLV singing "Oh Ayyaswamy" in Ore Iravu [51].
For patriotic fervour, listen to DK Pattammaal singing Mahakavi Bharathi's "Vettri Ettu Thikkum" in Naam Iruvar [47].
