Shajahan - Audio only Platinum disc Winner in 2001

Do you know Shajahan was the only movie which
won Platinum disk for the songs in year 2001.

But I am sorry for the movie apart from Vijay

  I don't have a URL for you. and not trying to defend the movie( I am not a psyco Vijay fan either)
  
  But I watched the countdown on Raj, Sun and Jeya for best of 2001 songs. They mentioned it.
  
  It's the fact. Looks to me the songs are very good. and Mani sharma has done a good job.

  The album is the most melodious of (besides Nandha). The movie is a disastor, that is the reason why the audio (though a hit) did not get lot of mention. Mani Sharma did a terrific job. Hope he does from now on.

  JR I think Nandha is most definately the best album of 2001 and Shajahan was a sumaar album.Only 2 songs were listenable.It was too much like a copy if IR's works.MS has mentioned that IR is his idol so he gets away with copying the tracks by claiming idolistion !

  Shajahan is really a good effort and songs are pleasing to the ears, especially melliname and minnalai pidithu. In all the countdowns it is ahead of Nanda.

  What is this platinum disc? Who gives this out?
  What are the other awards that are given for good casette sales (gold, silver??)
  
  Do you know the number of cassettes the album must sell to make it to this award?

  When 3 lakhs of Copies of an album are sold , Platinum disk is given.
  
  I don't know whether there are gold , silver awards.
  
  Normally the TV stations show these functions in Kollywood Buzz etc.
  
  I think Recently Bharathi and Thenali were awarded platinum disks. I am not sure about the other movies.

  In the English Pop arena the Platinum disk is given when 3 million copies or more sold.
  Then they also give double triple platinums for 6 / 9 millin copies. Our Indian film industry counts in Lakhs than millions.

  there are variations on lots of songs in Shajahan which are not typical to IR. I think MS is in between IR and ARR.

  I am not sure how much Shajahan sold, But in SunTV Countdown 2001, they mentioned, these four as the 'top albums of 2001' in terms of cassette sales

  Sun( also others) have several countdowns and each come up with different listings.
  The one which you have mentioned was not with cassette sales . May be with the taste of the selection commitee.
  
  I can't think of Dheena being ahead of Minnale in cassette sales,
  
  Friends - hmmm may be.
  
  I Also think Nandha will sell more than 3 lakhs of copies by this year.

  Who are we to judge? The people who access this forum do not even form 1% of the population who listen to Tamil music and judge the audio sales. Shajahan has good music, may be not like Nandha (even in Nandha I could count on only two of them). We arguing what is ahead is ahead of what is silly, and baseless. I would rate Shajahan better because it has beat, melody and mass kind of songs. I like that kind of variety, but this might be true for others.
  
  In respect of volume of sales of audio, till the movie is released an audio sells about 50% of total volume. If the audio has good numbers, 2 lakh is good number. If the movie is good, then 3-4 lakhs is good enough. If the movie and audio are hit, you can count 10 lakh minimum.
  
  Gone are the days when whole album has hit songs. Nowadays (unless he is a new MD) two hit songs, and rest are fillers. This is a practice done even by ARR nowadays (infact he starts adding hinid numbers).

  I completely agree with JR.
  
  We cannot represent the mass. Also we should be bold enough to accept the facts leaving our sentiments aside. We are struggling to comeout of the IR hang over. We are finding it difficult to accept the others make good albums ( apart from YSR - due to IR ).
  
  I still rank "Mun PAniya" the best song of the year. Not because YSR scored the music.
  
  But why people bought so many copies of "Shajahan"?
  
  The mass likes good music - not everyone gives importance to who makes the music.
  
  The MUSIC matters to the mass than the music director.

  I am sure she said 'in terms of cassette sales, these four albums topped in 2001' !
  May be the order which she mentioned was not correct, (But I typed whatever she said :-) and Minnalaey sold more than Dheena ... the pity is, there is noway we can verify this - no 'honest' records of cassette sales available,
  
  From some of the cassette shop owners (My cousin being one of them), I heard Kaasi Cassette Sales is also good !
