What a devastating song by IR uploaded by mr. prabhudas in coolgoose.com! Consummate tune and melodious - what great beats in the stanza. (A really remarkable pop song from Backstreet Boys - Everybody (Backstreet's Back) www.luanch.com has similar melody line and rhythm!!!) Like this song structure IR has some more. Eg: Aracha Sandanam; Kalyana Sela; any others u can remember

If I remember right, Nikkattuma is based on Raga Vachaspathi - the only movie song I have heard of in this Raga - awesome song.

isn't sembaruthu poovu also same raaga? why is this raga unusual? i thought earlier MDs used this a lot too? Malligaye is also from the same movie! Periya Veettu Pannakkaaran came out in 1990!!!! really a dramatic tune. the rythm is the stanza knocks you out. Philosopher, please enlighten on the vachaspathi raga in due course. thanks.

Execpt that Mano makes a horrible mess of it in the charanams with his clear lack of expression/bhaavam.Add another one to his long list of butchered songs.

I don't know why we should start a separate thread for a single song, but anyway, Vaachaspathi raagam is Melakarta raaga no. 64-- it's structure is
s r2 g3 m2 p d2 n2 S
If you want to translate that to standard Western classical notation, assuming we use the C-scale, then the structure would look like this:
C D E F# G A Bb C
The pattern of semitone jumps goes as follows:
2 2 2 1 2 1 2
I think that's all the information I can give you on the raagam. But for now, Nikkattumaa may be the only film song in that raagam (things may very well be different when and if I start composing for film music!) :-)))

purv, thanks, but you said it. it is the only song of that raga, deserves talking about it. for me, it is a phenomenal song, the impact is like hit by a meteor ;---)

purv, do you think this is a superlative raga (the most mystical?) i think there is one song in malayalam that strikes me deep more than any other and i think it is becuse the raga is Vaachaspathi - it is in a film called Malsaram and tuned by MKArjunan. In Tamil, what do you think of the song - Nallathu Kanney by TMS/PS Aval Oru Thamizhmagal also TMS/PS - any connection? can u also tell if that raga is similar to Vaachaspathi? also, a song by Madonna called Frozen strikes a chord in me. in www.launch.com Thanks.

cm, if it is at all a superlative raaga, it is entirely a matter of one's opinion. There are other raagas that are very rare that may have been used in film music only once. That doesn't mean that the raaga is superlative. It may only signify that the COMPOSER is superlative in matters of experimentation.

CM, Sembaruthi poo from film Sembaruthi - is in Kaapi raagam, is it not?
Comparison man, I happened to hear a very old English song (probably early 60's) set to the same pallavi tune as 'Nalladhu kanne' , broadcast from Miami radio services , few months back.
