Did any of you guys get hold of Vande MAtharam yet? With all the hype, and with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan gracing the album with his sonorous voice(boy..you must listen to Sangam to determine the full range of his vocal abilities), I am sure the album is bound to be another 'Bad'(I mean MJ's album...no pun intended)

last week edho oru hindi padathulae nusrat
'Fat'eh ali kahn kurlai ketaen. I wanted to
get out of my car as bad as i could.
If he had sung for more than 10 mins ., Indian
police could use his voice as a third degree torture mechanism on crooks.

I have to vehemently disagree with you here. Agreed NFAK's voice is sweet, it is harsh but the way he sings it is magic. But NFAK is an acquired taste and he is probably not for all people.
I used to feel the same way about a great American Jazz Singer and Trumpeter - Louis Armstrong. Whe I first heard his albums, it was like what you said torture. Now that I am about 10 years older and so much the wiser I can't get enough of him. (BTW, LA was a trumpeter who later became for his style of singing. He is to Jazz what Thyagaraja is to carnatic).

I just looked at the Indian Express (headlines) about NFAK's death. There is no mention about this album. But there is a disjoint sentence just before Preparations are being made to fly his body to Islamabad(Text not repeated exactly as in the paper). Checked Deccan Herald - but no mention about NFAK in the headlines.

Yesterday, I went to a local music store in New Jersey, to buy this album. Since I know,
NFAK has passed away, my expectation were very high to listen to his last song. The CD had an very attractive cover, with a nice photo of ARR, increasing my expectations to one more level. Did the album reach up to my expectation level?.
........ Without any further ado, here is the review.
Maa tujhe salaam, the first song is the typical ARR number, though music is bit more acoustical. It is ok song.
Second song is the version recording of vande mataram. we all know very well the tune.. ARR really put some mesmerizing music for this track, great Saxs and guitar usage. After hearing this song, I am
expecting more from next song 'gurus of peace', the so called NFAK's last recorded song.
But what can I say?. it is a big disappointment. Not bcos this song is known in some parts of India as 'porralle ponnu thaiye', bcos there is nothing in this song to rave about. I am thinking, whether NAFK
Died for singing this kind of song ( just kidding).
Fourth song 'tauba tauba' is another typical ARR number, which has nothing new to show.
Fifth song 'only you' is the only saving grace of the album. It is a very good song, and ARR singing is on par with the song quality.
Next song is different version of second song and last one is tamil version of fist song.
The only great think about this album is, the unusually high acoustical sound form ARR
Here after, I have decided not to buy any more ARR albums without listening to it.
It is very big let down from ARR, and he definitely owes a big apology to his fans.
e.hari
p.s. As usual, like prev ARR albums more I listen to this, more it is enjoyable. . I have completely forgotten now that gurus of peace is porrallie ponnu thai, just like his all other previously self-inspired numbers. Already I have started waiting for his next release, just like the current janatha. It is high time for someone to stop people criticizing ARR.

I think what e. hariharan means is that as the case with some ARR albums, one begins to appreciate the quality and the beauty of ARR's music after one has listened to the album two or three times.
I also have a similar opinion about ARR. Furthermore, I think that most of the people who criticize ARR are those people who often listen to ARR's albums only one time, and fail to percieve the beauty due to this.

To Himanshu,
I disagree. In my case the more I listen to ARR the more I dislike. Initially I like quite a few songs of a film , as I listen to it more I end up liking only one or two songs and I simply fast forward the rest. It happened in case of MK ( the only song I like is "oo lalla") and now in Kabhi Na Kabhi ( to be released in tamil as Mona Lisa)
I like only one song.

I think I will have to agree with Himanshu. It happened to me in 'kaathalan'. When I heard the songs first, none except 'ennavaLE' and 'kaathalikkun peNNin (minus Udit Narayan)' appealed. I did not feel like listening to the others.
But the songs were such a big hit that they were played everywhere and had to listen to them and in due course I started to like 'oorvashi', 'mukaabalaa, and 'pEttai rap (wonderful song)'.
But one difference between me and Himanshu. He sees beauty in ARR's songs after 2-3 hearings. I realise that they are just hearable after 2-3 forced hearings.

Himanshu,
You can buy this cd in any indian grocery stores.
It all depends on where are you living? . In New Jersey it is freely available.
BTW thanks for guessing it right. All ARR albums, first time you will hate it and curse it
for recycling his old songs. Second time your anger level will be little bit lower, and third , fourth time songs will be ok and afterwards you will start to love the songs. Most of his albums, in my view falls in to this category. That is the reason, even after all this bashing, his albums are top sellers. I was trying just to convey this feeling, if it confused ( referring PG), anyone, I am very sorry. Is it true that ARR bashers listen to ARR songs more than his fans?.

I had a chance to listen to this album today. Feel that bankim Chandra's original vandE maataram is the best piece in the album. ARR's embelishments to the basic tune are truly fabulous. Well ARR is best at this.. reworking others tunes. :)

My 2cents on Vande mataram: At first I resisted the temptation of spending 8 bucks on a cassette but later decided to buy as I was curious. i now regret that I should have bought the CD as the recording quality is the best to come from ARR.
The first # reminds me of Vangelis . The wailing of ARR is irritating ( he should defer singing to others--not Remo of course.) I somehow see a plot on the part of the producers of this album to cash in on ID 50th anniversary fervour. The usage of sax and acoustic guitars in well done ( a la kenny G and Doors "this is the end"). I dont know why he corrupted the NFAK # with english lyrics etc. He should have used nmore traditional percusson like tabla alone.
Tauba Tauba -- simply cant' figger out the need for this very AAResque # on this patriotic album. this song is sure to abused as a dance #. (though innovative and his hindi pronuciation has improved). "only you " would be better if he had avoided the inglees usage.
Lot of repeat # on this album makes you feel that you got less for the money. ( seems like a hurried effort)
I am normally not this harsh on ARR. He does have potential to go into fusion jazz as long as he records it abroad. i do agree with E hari that his compositions sound better with repeat hearings but I have still not gotten that stage yet.
