Some examples:
As an old lady in Pohda, Pohda pokkeh
As a child in Daddy, Daddy (Mouna Ragam)
Best for carnatic songs like Singaara Velaneh
Beautiful in romantic numbers like Seer kondu vaa ven megamey
Sexy like in Nilaa kaayuthey
Conclusion SJanaki is the Kamalahasan of songs!!!
Satisfied - MSK?

S. Janaki's first child like song was
"kannaa nee engey" in Rusi kanda poonai.
Incidentally, it's a kannan song. (For
your notice: Nammoor)
She once sang in a male voice. Dont remember
the song & movie.

The male voice(adolescent) song of Janki is from Nenjathai Killathe. It is "mummy peru maaru, en oorum velacheri.."

To vadi velu.
Daddy daddy is from mouna geedhangal, not from mouna ragam.
BTW are poda poda bokkay & mammi peru maaru runaway hits? No. These kind of gimmickery doesn't make one versatile. Malaysia
Vasudevan can sing well in Suruli & CS Jayaraman's voice. Does this make him more versatile than SPB?

There is a beautiful song for suruli sung by SPB. Song
goes like "konjam othungu..". Anyone know the movie?
Sumitra is his jodi in this movie.
I doubt anyone else could have done justice to the song.
NOValen, interested in a list of songs specially sung for
actors, like this?

MSK originally started the topic by saying S. Janaki is the most versatile singer. Vadi Velu is right in that aspect. M'sia Vasu is indeed a versatile singer - not neccessarily better than SPB, but no less versatile.
To: Rajaraman
I have a better topic for listing. Look out for it. It's as easy as 1,2,3!

Well. Even though i feel Chitra and S'latha are great singers , i miss one thing in their songs.
That is in SJ songs' she reflects the mood of the song so much ..she puts a lot of emphasis to bring out the exact situation of the song - be it romance, anger, whatever..
"Alaghu Malar " in Vaidhei Kaathirunthaal , "Putham pudu " in Alaigal Oivathilai , "Natham " in Kaadhal Oviyam are still fresh..(and many more )
The only song of S'latha that had this aspect was
"Maalaiyil Yaaro" in Chatriyan .. as for chitra it's "Ethetho Ennam " in Punnagai Mannan.. may be i missed others .. but i miss SJ's melodies a lot these days esp in IR's tunes..

"The only song that has this aspect was.."
That's a statement! What about "poraale
ponnuthaayee"? Even "mukkaalaa mukkaabla"
reflects the full mood, right..
For chitra, one can list many of her later
songs, "kannaalane", "pulveli".
But comparatively SJ is more versatile..

Did anyone listen to 'sinna ponnu selai chitirappoo polae' from Malayur mambatiyan. It is a rank bad song from SJ (she has quite a few to her credit). Whenever I listen to this one it reminds me of someone 'scratches in the black board with a chalk' or 'kadhavidukkil mattikonda
eli'. Or how about this song 'naan pada varuvai' from uthiripookal - when she goes in high pitch her voice becomes 'kreeeeech' or when she tries to compete with SPB (in terms of talking or laughing in the middle of the song) in parandhalum vida matten from Guru.
I don't mean to douse the enthu of MSK and others, but this is how I feel when I listen to these songs.

To Ravi:
Have you seen the movie "uthirippookal"?
The song "naan pada varuvai" is picturised as follows. A tomboyish girl sings a carnatic song along with her girlfriends by the side of a river. It was a comedy scene. So, I think SJ would have been asked to sing in a way that will suit the role.
I think the same holds good for the other song
"sinna ponnu selai" in Malaiyoor Mambattiyan also as saritha is a gramathu girl who sings the song. Do you say that "Inji iduppazhaga" was a bad song just because it was sung in that manner by SJ.
SJ is a versatile singer I agree, But I don't like her singing for kids. I hate the song "kanna nee enge, vaa vaa nee inge". She might sound like a kid but it doesn't suit. The voice sometimes seems so unnatural and too mature for a kid.

To cp:
Inji iduppazhaga is a good song, blended well with the character. But the same cannot be said about chinnaponnu selai - I don't think IR made his singers to sing based on the character for all his songs. In another thread about IR's voice
many fans said they love IR's voice 'cos it sounds rustic. If so,then why IR sang songs for urbane characters? May be IR thinks his voice is not only rustic. Wish i could state my point more clearly.

One (s)bad news. SJ lost her husband last week. Will it affect her perfomance (It will) very badly? Are we going to lose a great singstress?

what happened to this topic??????I'm a die hard fan of SJ.I hope someone will give life to this topic please.......
i agree that she is the most versatile singer in the Tamil music scene. Most of the singers are so routine though they have great voices.i always wandered whether there will be any singer who could sing Ponmeni uruguthe in Moondram Pirai in such a mood and at the same time give such melodious songs like Chinna Thayaval in Dhalapathi
like how SJ gave.i think she is the best forever.

I agree that Janaki is a fabulous singer. But that does not mean that she is the only versatile singer in TFM. A lot of the songs mentioned where from the Illayaraja period. Everyone knows that he composes for the storyline and does whatever to satisfy the directors needs. Nowadays, the music aimed at youngsters who want to hear a lot of beats and lovestuff. There is no want for creative songs with meaning. People get tired of them or just aren't prepared to listen to them as mush as they are to fast beaty songs. In my opinion CHITRA happens to have a GREAT voice. I can't explain the voice in words. But her timbre is great. She has sung many versatile and meaning full songs. People don't notice them because their are so many new cassettes coming out all the time. People forget the ones that came a month ago easily. In the days of Janaki, people had the time to listen to a song as many times as required for it to be their favourite.

I went thru the ongoing discussion on Janaki as a versatile singer. I consider Janaki as the most versatile singer to this day.I have listened to lot of her kannada and tamil songs and her versatality cannot be matched. She is at ease singing any type of song : be it calssical, cabaret number, emotional, or a happy song. She fills life into it.She is the only singer I consider, who can sing like akid and it is difficult to make out that it is indeed Janaki singing athe song for the kid. Some people have praised Chitra. But I consider her too monotonous and she sings all songs at teh same tempo and speed. By the way,did you know taht Chitra considers Janaki as her guru..??

I am a fan of SJ. She was reigning supreme in Malayalam for almost two decades till CHitra's ascent since mid 80s. I feel even though Chitra has a beautiful voice she lacks versatility which is so characterisitc of SJ. Is SJ sining many songs of late? Recently I heard some songs in Tamil which made me feel she should nothave sung them.
Does anyone know why IR more or less stopped using SJ?
