For the past ten years or so, A.R. Rahman (for mainstream movies), Ilayaraja (for more serious independent movies), and Deva (for everything else) have been ruling Tamil cinema. But I think the current year is really fascinating because all three of these guys, while not gone, are certainly on their way out the door.
Of the young music directors now, who will replace them?
Here are my picks. Tell me what you think.
A.R. RAHMAN -- My pick for his replacement right now is Harris Jayaraj, but only for lack of anyone else. A.R. Rahman because famous because he sounded SO different from the norm. But Harris sounds just like ARR, so I don't think he'll last. But for right now, I'll go with Harris Jayaraj.
ILAYARAJA -- Yuvan Shankar Raja is definitely going to the next Ilayaraja, in my opinion. He's proved his versatility by taking films as different as "Thulluvatho Ilamai" and "Nandhaa" and doing exceptional jobs on both.
DEVA -- I'm going with Vidyasaagar (though Karthik Raja) is a possibility, too. O.K., I know Vidyasaagar is no spring chicken himself, but he's proved himself to be as good (if not better than Deva) in the past year in such movies as "Dhill" and "Poovellaam Unn Vaasam." I also think Karthik Raja is a possibility, too, because like Deva, he doesn't seem to have any qualms about "taking inspiration" from foreign songs.
Who are your picks to replace ARR, Ilayaraja, and Deva?

producers's with no money who want their fav. eng songs in deva's name will pick him.
A producer having not enough money for ARR will pick harris jeyaraaj
A producer who wants to please IR will pick Yuvan!
People who pick deva are better off picking him.. karthik raja can handle offers that ARR or IR refuse

we will see many independent composers bringing international pop from India, that is beyond HJ & YSR even. ARR flow is long gone. so question of wait and see, in another 10 years most of international hits will come from Chennai, maybe YSR may begin that era

I guess YSR definitely have the spot in TFM next few years, But IR is impossible to replace if we consider his experience! ARR on the other hand, brought the modern western to tfm now having hard time to find him self a spot. Harris J. can't say much about him. Let's give him some time! What about Shankar M. and co. they are also making a mark like Haaris J did for minnale. K.R. -I thought he will lead the TFM but not....why. after muddy water was shaken after the arrival of Deva and ARR in 90's I think now it is getting bit clear to see through. in conclusion, there is no oneman show anymore. anyone could lead....but in my opinion YSR at this young age and the potentials surely he will do some changes to TFM.. may be even to outwhere...

you're right about shankar-ehsaan-loy. but remember they're hindi music directors, not tamil. even "aalavandhan" they did only because it was released in hindi as "abhay"
