Dear Shashi,
I was wondering what happened to you, for a long time, perhaps after AP and KK , we never saw ur reviews on ARR albums, ofcourse there were not any great albums either,
A sincere honest request, I know it is hard to find time, is there anyway you can review the old IR album's in your own style (I, I am sure many, like the way you review every song in great detail), especially the late seventy album's and early eighties.Atleast one movie a month,, please..... I am a diehard fan of IR, I like lot of ARR album's inspite of many listenings , somehow ARR's songs never sustain the way IR songs sutain in me (IMHO), I make several attempts toforce myself many good albums of ARR, yet ultimately the effect is short lived or fades soon, like for ex..if I listen to ROJA now, I never have the same urge as listening to Johny, I was hooked to couple of good songs from AP and KK, again after a gap of 6 months now, when I listen to them they don't give me the same feeling. Also I always wonder if those kind of songs were totally new or has been done in the past. Well pardon me for the irrelevant digression.
I will appreciate if you can do the Old IR album review in your style atleast few, ex:Nenjathau Killade, Johny, Thenrale ennai thodu, Kaadhal Oviyam, Nzhalgal, Payanagal mudivadillai..
Anothe digression,,,just happened watch "Lagaan " in theatre, it is just a great movie, very well narrated, of course little slow paced at times, especially in the first half, and little long also, but over all it is just fantastic, way ahead than any of those those usual junks (including the super duper hit of last year, KnPH.)Every character is just superb, great acting by whole crew, a rare phenomenon in the bollywood. It is equivalent any of the great hollywood classics. BGM is good, could have been better, still one of the good efforts by ARR for BGM after "Iruvar". Songs, I don't know the great details of music, but IMHO, one of the better albums after "Taal", I actually liked the songs much more than his KK and AP.
Shashi, thanks again..

Welcome back Shashi, thanks for the detailed review once again. I got one query about this guy Prasanna, as you wrote he has arranged the string section and I noted also his name appears in the CD label. I am a novice in music theory thus could you please explain what part does the MD play in composing this number and the person who arranges the string section. Thanks

I wonder why with such immense knowledge about Shashi still has a terrible feeling about 1 2 ka four

Hi guys
Thanks for the feedback. I will try and answer some of your questions.
1. First--Both 'Common Friend' and 'Reeliv' comments about 1,2 ka 4. Yes, I do agree there are probably 2 songs that are enjoyable but on the whole the songs lack creativity. One of the reasons to write reviews is to appreciate the hard work and true creativity and to criticize even mediocre stuff. ARR like every other musician has to work with the reality of commercial success etc., but by trying to get not only his fans but all music lovers to understand to seperate the 'wheat from the chaff', a reveiwer may influence the so called commercial success of an album (even if it is just a tad bit--every attempt counts). By encouraging albums like 1,2 ka 4--I do not want to encourage mediocrity. There are a dozen folks in the field who are ready to do the same and 'ARR has set higher standards'--no doubt but we should atleast remind ourselves and him of the same.
Regarding Prabhu Das's comments--I do agree that good songs and albums are forever and I would argue the fact that ARR's good numbers tend to fade with time. Regarding Raja--yes I grew up listening to Raja and all of the albums mentioned are golden albums--the real vintage Raja.
Briefly, writing reviews for older albums (IMO) is not going to influence the future output from Raja. You may question if my review affects ARR's output? I dont know, but would like to believe that like I mentioned before atleast by encouraging the right material and consequently affecting the commercial success (however small it may be) I am trying to foster creativity. On a different note--yes the vintage Raja era was good for several reasons--1. He was starting his career and working really hard. 2. He was accomodative to ideas from his brother and several of the key members of his troupe. 3. He was more flexible with the lyricists. 4. He primarily used accoustic instruments and not synthesized stuff. 5. He was still living life--What do I mean by that?--Once, Raja moved more into the world of spirituality ( I use this term to mean philosophical/metaphysical etc..) he became more cynical of what we consider to be mundane life. I am not here to argue the merits of such a view, but only to say that whenever a musician (particularly in popular cine music where most of his fans are still commoners and not 'spiritual') loses his touch with the commonly perceived reality his ability to communicate and touch his fans is also lost to some extent. In contrast the verve and zest for life is what drives ARR in IMO.
Finally for shathriyan--although I am not entirely sure, I think the main melody and its progression is conceived and composed by the music composer (in this case ARR); within a particular segment of the composition individual portions may be arranged--for example the 2nd and 3rd string section (who play the counterpoint, second melody, bass string section etc) may have been Prasanna's work. We definitely hear some of Prasanna's origianl work, otherwise his name would not be mentioned and also ARR should be appreciated for giving the appropriate credits.

Well Shashi's review was quite detailed. I tend to think that if we start reviewing in such detail i would end up liking every song composed by IR as his orchestration and melody is unmatched even for so considered medoiocore songs of his. Coming back to Lagaan, except for the Ganan Ganan song none of other songs made any impact on me. I would rather consider Ismail Darbar's score in Hum Dil DeChuke Sanam as more authentic and better composed Folk score.

Thanks Shashi, for ur prompt response.
In that case , I don't see you writing similar reviews for recent IR albums either, I did find "Kannukkul Nilavu", Hey Ram, and many more recent works were definitely very good.
I couldn't come out of "Kannukkkul Nilavu' and Hey ram songs for a very long time.
Are u by any chance a physician, I see from ur IP address, u are from UNMC (university of Nebraska Medical center), may be I am wrong, just curious.

Shashi, isnt ARR known for his spirituality too?His composure in the face of dizzying successes and stunning failures(Iruvar's fate would've crushed an ordinary man) surely reflect his level of detachment and trust in God.He has said as much in many many interviews.
The more likely answer is that he is younger and has more creative energy(not to mention all the physical energy required to globe-trot and constantly keep abreast of music technology). But time wears most everything down ultimately and it will be interesting to see how long ARR can sustain those energy levels.
