I have just read a review of the movie, Porkkaalam on our local afternoon English daily. Here is how the review ends:
Deva who did the music for Cheran's first movie Bharathi Kannama, again handles the music in Porkkaalam. Deva is at his best and the more enchanting songs are Pattu seleh, Tanjavuru muniyarukitte and Karuvellaam kaatuvellam. That aside, Deva's background music score is simply remarkable and leaves the listeners' floating in a world where dreams seem to be a reality. I daresay this is one of the best music in Tamil movies, as it is simply nice to listen too.
The above are NOT my views as I have neither seen the movie nor herd any of the songs.
P/s: The movie is starred by Murali, Sangavi, Meena and Manivannan and according to the reviewer is a good movie.

This clearly tells us about his/her knowledge of TFM.

NOV
Deva did not introduce the phenomenon of copying Hindi songs (in fact, Veda did??) but only now, he has turned his head in that direction. Till recently, he was copying MSV and IR. In 'aasai' he started copying from English, as that was the trend intoduced by ARR. Now he has ventured into HFM too.
'poRrkkaalam' has some rustic songs in it. It is defenitely a releif to hear them after so much of noise from ARR, Sirpi and Co. But still....best in TFM is too much.

Here is a news item I read in the latest Saavi issue:
Deva's daughter is getting married to IR's elder brother,
Bhasker's son. So Deva and IR are going to become

I am surprised (glad)to see Saavi (the Only mag
to publish my one and only story) is still in existence..
Nov is going to like this..
I had been on a big road trip to Las Vegas with friends and I had the opportunity to listen to
lots of new songs which included Nerukku Nerr..
I knew most of the songs are not original
(But Bob Marley's works have been redone many times by Eric Clapton.. So also by Deva. Deva gets
a chance to be compared to Clapton.WOW!) but I
ended up listening many times to Aval Varuvala and
Manam Virumbuthey.. I was wondering what made the
songs aurally attractive though the Orchestrations
are nothing great (mostly repeat beats of ARR).
Finally I came to a conclusion Deva packaged the
song well the combination of Hariharan western/carnatic blend has come out sounding
good.
The lyrics are atrocious though. .. Pogum Floppy
disk aval!(Aval Varuvala) Man this is so stupid. Just for the sake of introducing as many English words in the song to sound hep, people are writing absolute junk. What's Floppy Disk got to with Aval? The line coming right after this is not clear to me. If somebody can decipher it please post.. Nenjai allumm.......... Aval!
- From: Aravind (@ 202.42.152.9) on: Mon Dec 1 22:29:27 EST 1997
Gokul
I was waiting for someone to ask me this. The second line is 'nenjai aLLum dolby song avaL'. The first line, FYI, is 'speedai sellum floppy disk avaL'. The lyricist knew about 'Flying Disc' which flies with great speed. So he thought 'Floppy Disc' is something similar.
When you can murder Tamil in Tamil songs, why can't you murder English? Let the massacare continue.

Paavam Gokul - innum nalla lyricsei ethirpaarththu kondirukkiraar! Who is actually bothered about lyrics these days? Have you heard Alps malai kaatru vanthu yennai thottathu by Hariharan and Bavatharani? Nice music and soon you will be singing along. Guess who else appears? Babylon, Michaelangelo, DTS sound system, etc. etc. In spite of all these the song is enjoyable:-))
Satya - Deva kaattil ippoa mazhai peiygirathu. If IR wants to make a koottani, it has to be on Deva's terms :-)) (Just a joke guys, - don't come after me............)

Ramki has analyzed these two songs(not joking)
in another thread. I think the "pengalai

go take a look

Nov..
What is the basis of your rating him NO.1?
If it is based only on the number of movies he scores then he is definitely numero uno.But There is something called Quality..(sigh!)
I do not know how Deva derives satisfaction out of
his work.
I happened to watch Kaalamellam Kathal Vazhga!
supposedly a rip off on Kathal Kottai. Deva has
got real guts for attempting to sing a dappanguthu
and a pathos version of some song. His voice is
IMHI,is so pathetic.. I cried during the pathos song but I also ended up crying in the dappanguthu
song (andaalu!!).
Yaaravudu Deva'vvu eduthu sollannum polarukke!

I think Deva is becoming a butt of various jokes. But he is like one of us, if you don't realise. He has been a fan of Raja all his life.
He is easily the best fan IR has ever seen, because this man has atleast composed film music, while we are sitting in different parts of the world, figuring out how far we can go with our exisitng professions, we have Mr. Deva, the not so Raga Devan, but the Devaadi Deva, who has given us folks in the absence of the great Raga Devan, great songs.
Look at that Rajni Song, Autokaran, Autokaran, naan naalum therincha autokaran, nalavanga route karan, etc. It not only describes our city's Auto drivers during a typical frustrating day, but also Mr. Deva. ?! What I mean is, that song is just a total surprise, I can't find any composition of even IR matching the pace and melody of that song.
Even more surprising is the final words of the song: Aachukku, Gummikku, aah, aachukku ina achakku than, aah gummikku ina gummikku than. Fantastic. Super o super.
Please let us give him due respect and credit. Please don't read any humor in the analogy. What I mean Deva is really talented and we must recognize that.

Hi,
All Ilayaraja Fans are indebted to Deva. Many good songs of Raja have been overshadowed by his extraordinary songs. So we do not know many of his good songs. Deva is right there to fulfill our wishes. He collects those songs and give them to us in a different cup. Ultimately you can see Raja in Deva's music. What else a Raja's fan can expect from Deva? He may not be a good composer. But he is still the best copier. In our practical life we understand that a "Copier machine" is inevitable. He is an expert in copying. Do you think copying is easier? It is something Raja could not do and Deva can do!!! If everybody starts composing on their own then they may become Raja. So do not curse Deva if he copies.
sathya
