Suresh - Has there been any response from Ram Gopal Varma, Mani Ratnam, Priyadarshan et al to the IIFAA "Hindimidation"? There ought to be - if these guys, as you put it, are "kicking some serious northie butt." Or do they consider themselves to be part of the charmed circle, and don't see what the hullabaloo is all about?

1 Ajith did the movie on account of his personal friendship with Santosh Sivan, just as Sunil Shetty appeared in Jeeva's '12B' and Anil Kapoor in Priyadarshan's 'Kakkakkuyil'. Read no more into it
2 'Skin fairness creams' is taking the topic into an altogether different area of color consciousness. Did u know the fastest growing markets for fairness creams are THAILAND and INDONESIA?
3 As for Sridevi etc. staying on in Mumbai, what's to stop them from making a pure professional choice dictated by commercial logic? Can one insinuate you for lack of patriotism just so you made a foreign country your home?
4 Isn't ARR setting the terms for Subhash Ghai, Aamir Khan and countless others to wait in Panchathan for weeks and months together to get his score? Aren't Hindi actors/actresses ready to drop whatever they have to work in a Maniratnam/Verma film? Aren't south technicians today among the highest paid in India? If this is not working on their own terms, what is?
4 On the IIFAA, I think all the characters you name were never in the reckoning, so they might not have cared. If at all anybody could've raised serious hell and gotten noticed for it, it was ARR, an award recepient himself. But then, there's not much evidence to show that he brackets himself within the confines of a 'tamil MD'.
You are reducing this whole debate to a 'color prejudice' setting, which is part of an endless debate and an enduring concern for social science. I can see that you've pretty much set your mind toward this particular stream of thought, and any further discussion can only degenerate into a dialogue of digression.. So...

Thanks, Suresh.
I guess you've decided that one can have it both ways. And I am not sure that is truly helpful in the long run. It is both a political and philosophical cop-out. The Bengali film-makers have have done so time and again. And they are celebrated outside the geography of India, they couldn't care less about Maharashtra. If Commercialism is indeed the God of the Day, then I guess, Bollywood and Kollywood are cut from the same cloth. When push comes to shove, you've got to choose. Otherwise we should just accept that "India" is an umbrella term which does not in anyway "exclude" the south. Why make the regional argument to begin with? How many in the South see the IFFAA to be a slap-in-the-face?
How many in Chennai and Hyderabad and Bangalore will pass on Kelvinators and Electrolux in the next few years? As I have said elsewhere in these forums Culture is a Commodity. Small wonder that fridge-makers and bulb-makers sponsor IIFAA and other such "Indian" events.
About me choosing a foreign country to be my home...factually correct. I must seriously reconsider the amount of time I spend in a forum on TFM or hosting a radio programme for over a decade on "Indian" music. And here I was thinking this was about my roots, and my cultural identity. Talk about be delusional. Here I come U2.
You're right. Let's leave it at that.
