Sometime back, there were quite a lot of songs which attempted to imitate Carnatic Music basics into Tamil Film Songs ( normally accompanied by Bharat Natyam kind of scenes). I find that this has died down. Would Carnatic Music ever gain that niche it used to have on film music as it had 50 years ago..

Have you listened to the Sax music in Duet. Many people were mesmerized by it. Kathiri Rajagopal had said in an interview that more people came to his concerts after hearing the music of Duet. Foremore, playback singers such as Yesudas, Unnikrishnan, Bombay Jayashree and Nithyashree have housefull concerts greatly to the popularity of their film songs. If tamil people attended Hariharan's gazal concert in TamilNadu, then it would have been due to his popularity after he became a playback singer. TFM has that kind of an impact on the people of TamilNadu. So there is no question about carnatic music's place within TFM industry.

Sampath,
The point is not clear. If you are talking about Carnatic Raaga based songs, you have such songs today too. Almost all of IR's songs are Raaga based.Vidyasagar ,ARR & Deva conciously use Raagas as their base for composition.

I think the role of Tamil Songs also has to promote the usage of Carnatic Music . I think Tamil Film Music should revive in creating more of an awareness for melodious times. Rarely, do I find anybody saying that I got interested in Carnatic Music because I heard semblance of it in a Tamil Film. Even today, the major part of learners come from specific community households and people who want to learn BharatNatyam. Is it too much to ask if TFM can heighten enthu for Carnatic Music?

On the contrary, I feel that film music has introduced a spirit of curiosity in the direction of Carnatic music. After the advent of programs like 'Raagam Sangeetham' etc you find more people than ever discussing raagas.

Tamil film music has greatly helped me in enriching my knowledge of car. music and i would say that if somebody wants to get himself interested in car. music, and doesnt' know where to start, i would suggest, tfm. actually, if i want know a raga, i would hear different tf songs in that particular raga. and hearing it over and over, would help me get a better hold of the raga.

Ramadass:
The 1st TFM song by Bombay Jayashree was:
Kai Veenaiye Theendum Kalaivaaniye from VIETNAM COLONY, MD Ilayaraja - In Hamir Kalyani Raga.
Nithyashree's was Kannodu from Jeans in Abheri Raga.
Unni's was Ennavale in Kaadhalan - mixture of Ragas making it a controversial song - e.g. Kedharam.
Sudha Ragunathan hasn't sung in TFM, however, Deva used a small Aalapana of hers preceding the song Proul Thedum Bhoomi in Kalki - this song was rendered by Chithra.
Other Carnatic musicians like Balamurali Krishna, ML Vasanthakumari and TN Seshagopalan have also sung in TFM.

I'm sure most of you would have read the write-ups on IR's classical influences by Srirangam Lakshminarayanan...but for the benefit of those who havent...please read them...the articles are just incredible.
