Stolen the title of tis thread from the Sun Network compilations of TFM songs picturised overseas. Let's use this thread to discuss songs picturised both outside India, and in exotic locations within India & TN.
I'd like to start off with the movie, Unakkaga Ellam Unakkaga with music by YSR. I haven't watched the movie yet, but I saw a couple of songs, Cleopatra and Ellam Unakkaga, *ing Rambha & Karthik. They were picturised in Perth, Western Australia. They had covered areas like the Perth City Centre, Burswood Casino (the exterior of course), South Perth (Swan River), Fremantle, Caversham wildlife park (wit the kangaroos), the Whiteman reserve, etc, among others.

Good thread WN... Of course, you remember the "Telephone Manipol" song in Indian. the Sydney Opera? and the Sydney bridge? were featured there.....the exotic aerial shot circling the Sydney bridge was just awesome !
Most of the old numbers shot abroad had these wierd dance sequences in public places that had us squirming in our seats...very embarassing !
But there were a few good ones too...an old Jaishankar starrer shot in USA..had a good song - Adhey Vaanam....saw this film as a kid, so I dont remember the details. Could anybody throw more light ?

WN-
Perhaps the first tamil film song to be shot abroad was 'Oru Raja Raniyidam'- Sivandha mann-1969. You could see Sivaji and Kanchana having fun in the Alps. TMS speaks in the interlude 'Alps malayin sigarathil, azhagiya Rhine nadhiyin orathil--'!!. Another song from the same film was shot in Paris- 'Paarvai yuvarani samrajiyam'.
The next, of course, was Ulagam Sutrum Valiban, shot in exotic locales in the the Far-East. Songs like 'Ulagam, azhagu kalaigalin surangam' (Expo-70, Japan), 'Bansaaye' and 'Pachai kili'. 'Aval oru navarasa nadagam' made waves, literally, as it was fully shot underwater!
Then there were many films shot in Srilanka- Pilot Premnath- Sivaji and Malini Fonseka singing 'Ilangayin ilam kuyil', Jaiganesh and Sathyapriya singing 'Azhagi oruthi ilaneer vikkira Cozhumbu veedhiyile', Nangooram-Muthuraman and Lakshmi singing 'Aalayam nayagan',- etc. Films like Othayadi paadhayile and Mohana punnagai were also shot in Srilanka. Much later 'Kannukku mai azhagu'-PS version and 'July maadham vandhaal'-Pudhiya Mugam.
Malaysia and Singapore again- Priya and Ninaithaale inikkum.
Japan again- Dharmaraja- Sivaji and KRV- Sivaji singing 'Jai Hind, Jai Jai Japan!'
Orey vaanam orey bhoomi-U.S.- which Cosmician refers to- Jaishankar sweeping the roads and singing the title song, KRV with her American pair singing 'Malairani Mundhanai' at the Niagara.
Kamal and Rathi romancing all over Europe in Ullasa Paravaigal - 'Germaniyin Sendhen malare'
Far East again in films like Varuvaan Vadivelan- Vijayakumar and Fadafat Jayalakshmi singing 'Joyful Singapore Colourful Malaysia', Raman Parasuraman- Sivakumar and Rathi singing 'Paaramma paaru Tokyo, Juliet pinne Romeo'!, Thaai Moogambikai- Sivakumar and Poornima singing 'Cheenathu pattu meni',Poo mazhai pozhiyudhu- Suresh and Nadiya singing 'Nadiya nadiya'
U.S. again- Sridhar's doomed 'Soundharyame Varuga
Varuga'- Sivachandran, Sripriya, Prakash and Rathi - songs like 'Iravil irandu paravaigal', 'Idho un kaadhali' and 'Aagayam thaane azhagaana koorai'.
Of course, later it became a regular feature to have at least one song shot abroad! Avvai Shanmugi, Tenali, Kushi, Minsara Kanna--

Cosmician- I am sure at least we both should not forget Nassar's Devathai- Parts of which were shot in namma pettai- Vinith and Keerthi Reddy, with the Deira skyline and the creek as the romantic backdrop!

OISG..thanks :-). I enjoyed the Ore Vaanam song....and the "La La La"? (VJ-Jolly Abraham) number picturised on KRV and that English guy was really a strange mix and stuck to my mind (I might have been 6-7 years old when I saw that film)!
Saravanan....namma orey oora ??!!! :-)
Neenga sollaveillaye ?!!! :-D
Naan Karama area..neenga ? :)
When Devadhai was released, I was still in India then and didn't even imagine that I would be working here one day !
Drop me a line whenever you have the time.
We could meet up :)

Cosmician- I too was around 8 years old when I saw 'Orey vaanam --'KRV was perhaps the first Indian actress to have paired with a foreign actor!!
Naanum unga ooru thaan- and same as you, never thought when I saw Devathai that I would be working here!
Will drop a line to you - we should meet:-))

priya- Darling darling, Sriramanin srideviye.., en uyir nee thane etc
By the way there was a time when people used to make a big din about shooting abroad. Now they shoot to ensure the stars don't play hookey.
in fact MSv in those days had a special tune for the far east toda n toy toda todan toy. shrill bamboo piece.

What about "Baba" ? Rajni's meeting with the 4000 year old Divine Baba was actually shot in the Swiss Alps. And I even read somewhere that the special effects were by the Lord of the Rings spl effects team.

No. It was shot in Haw Par Villa, Singapore. Even if
you visit HPV now, you can see it to be exactly as it
was during the USV times. Well maintained and
very colorful chinese statues!

"Even if you visit HPV now, you can see it to be exactly as it was during the USV times."
i heard tat HPV was going to be closed down? Didnt it happen?
And I dont agree tat HPV is as good as it was before. USV was taken in the early 70s i think, & i wasnt born yet those days (and dont remember the picturisation either), but I had the fortune of visiting HPV when I was still very young, before it was stripped off its earlier beauty & commercialised. by the time they were done wit the fatalistic uplift, I remember going there on a pri school trip and even at tat young age, I remember my classmates & i were sorely disappointed at wat they had done wit it. There were some fun features added, but HPV will never go back to its good old Tiger Balm days (sigh..)
Going back to Unakkaga EU, I think Cleopatra might also have been shot at other parts of Aust. but Ellam Unakaaga had a few scenes which seemed to look like Spore, esp at the end. It was like they went all the way to Aust and forgot to take a few shots and on the way back realised their mistake and retook the last few scenes in Spore.
I think they also went to Subiaco. I've never been to the Pinnacles, but someone said tat one of the scenes in Cleopatra seemed to have been shot there.
cosmic, yes Telephone Manipol (Melbourne malar pol) in Sydney. :)
I remember it caused quite a stir those days. I'm not sure why. was it the first time a TFM song had gone to Aust?
And of course the song which takes the honours IMO, is Athisayam from Jeans.

Maybe I was mistaken sk.
But I think there were some revolving huge tea cups which was shot at Genting Highlands.
I am little confused now. :)
In the near future, I expect our producers to venture to the moon to shoot our stars dancing there. Why Not?
Azhagiya nilavil oxygen nirappi ange ..... :)

Alavandhan:
It is possible that a different song of USV was
shot in Genting Highlands.
WN:
I saw HPV about three years ago and was very impressed
by the statues and the sharpness of the colors.
All the statues shown in USV were there.. but I
really cannot compare the actual HPV of USV times
with what I saw. Perhaps HPV had a much greater
look in the olden days. In any case, I did notice
that the number of visitors was pretty low even on
a week end. I really don't know whether it has been
closed down or not.

I heard that "Thanga nilavu" was the first movie to be shot abroad. The movie never got released. It was movie starring Sivaji and Bharathi.
The song "thanga Nilave Neeyillmal inimai kaana" ( TMS- Bharathi) MD SMS was originally scored for this movie and later used in another movie.
Is it true?
Thailand - Kadhal Vanile -Rasiah
Egypt - Jeans and KKKK
Greece - Samuarai?
Rathapasam -Spain and Italy. (Ootam kanda -SPB LRE was in Rome streets)
Kenya-Masai Marah(Serengati) - Appu
Addendum on Dharmaraja -an absolutely hilarious movie(???) with Sivaji using a Parachute to Climb up!!! The Song "Ki Ki Ki kilyakkoi" was shot with a Japanes dance background.
Ninaithale Inikkum - The Sambo song has the "Kavadi Chindu" background which MSV had used extensively in Varuvan Vadivelan also.Murugan connection ??? to Singapore/Malaysia

sk,
i understand wat u mean. U'd probably have been impressed if u hadnt visited it b4. However, HPV is a shadow of its former self. It was closed down for renovation in the mid 80s and when they opened it again, they had actually removed alot of intricate sculptures to make way for cafeterias, etc. It was sickening. They left the big statues there. But there were some smaller and really creative walls etc wit fine work showing scenes in hell, etc..it was fantastic..and they were all gone!
I was jus wondering if we cud be more specific abt the locations.
Some i always wanted to know:
-Sundari from Thalapathi
-Enna Vilai & other songs from KD
