SriRam (L),
Shehnai's usage in "Iravum Nilavum Valarattume" marandhutteengaLE, it had (& has) that very very very unexpected character in that song, only to elevate it to great heights.
I have a yearning right now to compile MSV's compositions to have them for ever and take them with me even to my next birth!
Here's but a small list:
1. Saravana Poigaiyil - as it comes in the movie.
2. Amaidhiyaana NadhiyinilE
3. Maalaipp Pozhudhin MayakathilE
4. Kannukku KulamEdhu
5. Ennuyir ThOzhi
6. Madhura Nagaril Thamizhch Changam
7. Athai Madi Meththaiyadi
8. Oru Naal Iravil Kan Urakkam Pidikkavillai
9. KElvi Pirandhadhu Andru
10. Ammammaa KEladi ThOzhi
11. Naalaam Naalaam Thiru Naalaam

Hi,
I was hearing Maligai en-Mannan mayangum...what a compostion, the flute interludes and the percussion and bass parts are one of his best.
Terrific tabla parts. It bridges over the drum parts beautifully, (Thanks to Prasad one of the unknown artists in TFM, plays or played tabla for MSV, powerfull pair of hands)
MSV fans, I going to upload some great MSV pieces by this month end in my web site, will contain most songs mentioned here.

Hi Srikanth
Agree about Prasads' amazing rythm sense. What do you think about the use of echo?
Most of MSV's composition had been in a time where artificial echo was seldom used, especially for the vocals. There seems to be a natural reverberation from the room where the instrumentalists recorded (in the studio); one could appreciate this if one listened carefully. But the voice in most cases (excludes his very late works) is devoid of much echo/processing?
What do feel is the best way to record vocals? Do you have any feelings/comment on the way MSV recorded his vocals?

Raja, "Naan kaatru vanga ponen" is from "Kalangarai viLakkam" scored by MSV.
Srikanth, when you made a mention of percussions, I immediately got reminded of "lilly
malarukku kondaattam" and "Banzai" from U.S.valiban, the latter had superbly placed congo beats.
Prasad, I guess , plays for IR these days. Great work in "Raagangal pathinaaru" in "Thillu Mullu". Another one of the several hundreds of numbers that had very imaginative tabla beats, "Unnai eNNi yennai maranthen" by PS from 'ragasiya police 115".

Sriram L:
Thanks for the clarification. Got confused with some other song. Kalangarai Vilakam has another great Ennai Marandhen ..Thendrale (something not right with my words ) (PS )

Raja, it is "Ennai Maranthathen..". Other songs in KGV,
Pallavan Pallavi paadattume
ponnezhil poothathu puthu vaanil
Enna uravo enna pirivo
Sange muzhangu.
Have you heard the songs of "Oru thai MakkaL"? "PaadiNaaL oru paattu" by TMS and PBS (the concept of seconds was introduced by MSV) and another great melody "kaNNan enthan Kaathalan".

Sriram L:
I like Minminiyai Kanmanaai Kondava..ai Ennidame Thandhal from Kannan En Kaadhalan - quite lively.
Dont care much for Paadinal Oru Paatu personally :)
Oru Thai Makkal - dont remember specific songs.
Were Kanmani Raja and Kuzhandhaiyum Deivamum from the same period? Naan nandri solven - with an intoxicating PS's voice - slow beat with a piano in the background - quite rare IMO :)

MSV followed similar arrangements for
"VaNNakkiLi sonna mozhi" ,"Manithan enbavan deivamaagalaam" and "KaNNirendum minna minna" (Aandavan KattaLai) , swing beats with piano. Talking of piano pieces, listen to the prelude music in "Paaduvor Paadinaal Aadathondrum" from "kaNNan en Kaathalan".
If you have noticed, humming was given tremendous importance , you could create fresh tunes out of those . Eg :- Poovarayum poongodiye(idayathil Nee), NaaLaam NaaLaam thiruNaaLaam (kaathalikka neramillai),
Athaanin muthangaL (uyarntha manithan), oru raaja raNiyidam (sivantha MaNN) , Yaarukku MaappiLLai Yaaro (paarthaal Pasi theerum) and several more.
KD was released probably in the same period. I do not know about KR. What are the songs in KR ?

Guys,
You're bringing to mind a lot of great songs here.
Sriram, Oru Thaai Makkal also had the duet, "Aayiram Kannukku Virundhaagum".

Poovarayum Poongodiye (Is it by PBS)-yes great humming. I think that movie had other greats.
Kanmani Raja has one more good song - Odam Adhu Odum, adhu sollum porul enna (PS and SBP), I think there was a freshness to MSV's music after splitting with TKR.
keep adding...

raja,
is it not "Odam kadalOram athu sollum poruLenna"?
great number!. There is one unique thing (i think it is unique) in that song . SPB repeats the line "yEno athu yEno athai nAnum rasikindrEn " for 5 times to different tunes.

Raja, Sriram: KR came in 1972, I think whereas KD
came in 1966. KR had one more great song.. kaadhal
viLaiyaada kattilidu kaNNE.

I think the train song, chiththirai maadham
powrNami nEram sung by PS in Raman eththanai
Ramanadi, is an excellent creation by MSV. I feel
even Raja's manjaL nilaavukku indru orE sugam
pales in comparison to this song. The beats are
very innovative and the train effect is so nicely
brought out with the music as well as the sandhams.
An excellent example to point to MSV's creativity! Comments?

Ragapriyan:
I find Manjal nilavukku better ( dont know why:)
One more train based tune - Ullam rendum from Sivagamiyin Selvan.
Bhumiyil Iruppadhum from Shanti Nilayam has excellent lyrics and a positive feel to it. The film also had Iyarkai ennum Ilayakani. Is it by SBP and PS? - SBP's voice sounds different.

on: Thu Feb 11 11:25:14 EST 1999
Raja,
Yes! iyarkai ennum is by SPB and PS.
While there are diverging opinions on whether SPB's first song is 'aariyam nilave vaa' or 'iyarkai yennum iLayarkanni' , SPB's first song indeed is none of these!. His first song is from a film 'Hotel Ramba' which was never released. SPB himself agreed to this in a function when gangai amaran jokularly said there is a relationship between SPB and ramba. SPB was flabbergasted on this and when he asked GA why he said so, he explained by saying his first song featured in that film!
Ragapriyan,
'Chiththirai mAtham' is indeed a creative one! Speaking of creativity, i think 'paduvOr pAdinAl Ada thOndrum' also qualifies for the category. It is refreshing with its piano interludes. The song has thundering start with tabla , violin , piano combo . Another song in idhaya veenai 'ponnanthi mAzhai pozhuthu' which is a pleasant number has excellent violin ,guitar pieces in the second interlude.

Rameshbb, SG scored the music for "Idhaya Veenai", MSV-ish isn't it? Several tunes.
"Oru Raaja RaaNiyidam" from Sivantha MaNN had it all...exuberance, melody and different tunes. The other song from SM, "Oru NaaLile Uravaanathe" had unbelievable melody content and so did "KaNNan enthan Kaathalan" from "Oru Thaai makkaL".
Raja, other songs of "Shanthi Nilayam", KadavuL oru NaaL ulagaikkaaNa
Iraivan Varuvaan avan endrum
SelvangaLe (all by PS). Since you reminded me SPB-MSV combo, one got a feeling that SPB was given tremendous freedom to improvise and the scope was always there, the santhams were very innovative. Here are a few from this combo that one could savour for ever.
Angum indum paathai undu (avargaL)
Ponnendrum poovendrum (sudarum sooravaLiyum)
Anbu vanthathu ennai AaLavanthathu (?)
Aayiram Aayiram aandin munne (dheergasumangali)
Paadum pothu naan (netru indru NaaLai)
Ange varuvathu Yaaro (-do-)
Maargazhi paniyil (muthaana muthallavo)
Enakoru Kaathali (-do-)
ANNan oru Koyil endral (superb improvisations)
KanaakkaaNum kaNgaL mella (agni saatchi)
Neram Pournami Neram (Meenava naNban)
more to follow....
There was a song sung by MSV and LRE in "Nilave Nee Saatchi") which is particularly endearing , apart from the title song sung by PS and SPB. Could somebody enlighten me ?
