John Scott
John Scott who conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) during the recording of Ilaiyaraaja’s Symphony # 1, talks about Ilaiyaraaja and his music in this piece.
Meeting with Ilaiyaraaja has certainly been a special event in my life, one that I will always remember with great emotion, and with the hope that we will see more of each other and share a lot of music in the future. Although we come from very different cultures we seem to have a lot in common, we have both chosen to compose music for films and we both aspire to write music from our souls which we trust will have a more lasting value.
I have now had the privilege of conducting Ilaiyaraaja’s new work, a work of symphonic proportions in five movements and lasting well over an hour. I understand that this is his first symphonic work and in it he proves that he is a master composer capable of communicating a wealth of melody and emotion. I hope that this is the first of many to come.
My first reading of the score, before meeting with Ilaiyaraaja, revealed that it was highly individual music in many ways, abounding with intricate rhythms as well as the themes, which linger in the memory refusing to go away. I could sense his love of the western classical masters but I could also see the freshness, which his culture brought to the on-going tradition of true music. We finally met for the first time just a few days prior to the recording sessions and went through the score together. I asked Ilaiyaraaja to sing me various segments and give me an indication of his feelings regarding dynamics, tempi and intensities. This helped enormously when it came to facing the orchestra with a new work which none of the orchestra had ever seen or heard. Every thing was brand new, straight from the copyist’s pen.
Both the orchestra and myself felt a great responsibility in bringing this new work to life. Somehow a first recording or a first performance tends to be formative and it is only after it has been heard that it begins to live and grow in people’s mind. I am now getting to know it through working on it and sincerely hope that it will reach a wide audience which, having heard it, will get to love and appreciate it, as I do, for what it is.
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and myself, together with everyone who worked on the project have expressed their sincere admiration and enthusiasm for Ilaiyaraaja’s new work. We understand that it was composed in an incredibly short space of time, and hope that it will not be too long before we hear his next symphonic opus.
John Scott divides his time between London and Hollywood.

This bothers me a lot. It is indicating in many subtle phrases that the symphony is not a symphony, it is what it is, so try hard to like it by hearing it a few times and let it grow in you like rahman's albums from 1996 thus far!

Are yaar,
this john scott is different-THE john scott is a quite a old chap-he was one of the conductors of music for cleopatra which came in 1965.He is bald and is probably around 65 years now. This link you have given has nothing to do with IR.

Are Yaar,
This is another John Scott, who is Organist / Chorister. IR's conductor John Scott is a film composer. The photos are proof of this.

Can some body find other links contributiona and records of the JC about whom me, you and IR are talking about. If he is such a great man then we have to get his details quite easily ..Isn't it?

Are Yaar,
Don't talk rots here and just get lost. You are not fit to talk abt John Scott especically when you don't know what is BGM nor about ppl involved in it.
Do us all a favor and get lost.

Who is JC ? That is the simple question I asked.
If anybody know answer me..
Searching him in net and not finding enough clue...I am still convinced to hold that he is no more than a paid conductor.

ambleen, r u the anbu who wrote to JS? How many years has it been since the 'celebration'?
btw, is anyone here interested in taking collective action to press for the release of the symphony?
AY, have a look here: http://webhome.idirect.com/~rlevy/current_question.html
I dont think JS's identity is the most crucial thing here. I liked his remark "It shows how the critics have crucified every great composer without exception!" Reminded me of how ALW was crucified by some ppl in this forum and don't we wonder how fit they were to talk about him. Esp when we know wat ALW's 'crime' was. :)

WN,
for you info ALW is widely disliked in UK -mainly for his musicals which are fit only for tourists.hehehe...

Only one and it generally talks about the person. If he is such a great person, then there will be many site attributing to him and his achievenment.
Don't get me wrong here. I am not here to pass judgement over JS's knowledge. What I am saying is I don't find reason to make a larger than natural image of JS ..That's it...He is a conductor of orchetra..That's it....There are many like him...And that is my claim...and he just happens to work for IR on his symphony and he was paid for that..that's it....
Did I offend anybody here...? Sorry if I have.

//If he is such a great person, then there will be many site attributing to him and his achievenment. //
OISG-despite your attempts at sarcasm, you are absolutely correct-that explains why a crap play like the mousetrap is running for more than 40 years isnt it?
Are yaar-are you blind as well?I thought you were deaf only towards good music:-)
This is the first line in the above link I have given you-//Over the last 35 years or so, John Scott has established himself as one of the finest composers working in films today//

this gives a list of his works as a composer.wake up-I cannot be doing all your work!
