I have wondered many a times whether IR excells in country Folk Songs or Western Classical Songs. The answer that I found was that he excells in both. Here are some great songs in both categories.
Western Classical
1. AAnandha Raagam ....(Paneer Pushpangal)
2, Etho Mogham.....(Kozhikoovuthu..)
3. Intha Minmenikku Kannil oru
4. Aaghaya Gangai (Dharmayutham)
5. Idhayam Pogothe.....(Puthiya vaarpukal)
6. Ennvaanile.... (Johny)
Folk Songs
1. Cholam vedekaiyele
2. Kothamali Pooveee (Kallukul Eeram)
3. Rasave.. Ona Nambi (Muthal Mariyathai)
4. Pothivacha maliga Mottu (Mann Vasanai)
IR really to my opinion excelled in both categories and was very succesfull in even mixing both.

I have no second thoughts! IR has been supreme in TN folk! WCM & others come only after that...that way, why, he has even excelled in Indian classical (e.g. Sindhu Bhairavi)... but to fit the word`dominated', mann vasanai tops the list!
Man, this guy smells so much local even in Kerala!

I did not know that 'Aananda Raagam' from Panneer Pushpangal was 'Western classical'. I thought that it sounded like Keeravani Ragam of Carnatic Music. Can anyone throw more light into this?

eden, IR songs are more malayalee than any other composer. You are absolutely right. Listen to Aruna girikkottaram and Friends. You will notice that the charanams are absolutely different than what he does at home or in telugu or kannada

Viswabharathi: I agree with you! I never found anything hardcore WC in Aananda raagam. It was more IC as in the 2nd interlude of Andhi mazhai.

Viswabharathi,
'aanandha raagam' is based on simhendra madhyamama (perhaps the first song of IR in that raga), for which it is supposed to have received rave reviews in A Vikatan when it was released.

Vijay, Viswa,
The voilin pieces on the song Aananda Raagam..., especially the starting prelude definetly has some WC touches.

Vijay, thanks for pointing out, I got the Ragam wrong; Dorai, another good example for Western Classical could be 'Manadhil... enna ninaivugalo..'- I don't remember the name of the movie; though it has mixes of carnatic at the end of the charanam

Yet another song in total western Classical I remembered- 'Devan thiruchabai malargale..'
Again I don't remember the name of the movie.
