Mogamul got released in 1995. (cf. http://tamicinema.com)
It's definitely disappointing to note Minsara kanavu
shd get the award, when there were better albums.
Incidentally, MK was released in 1997 .

Compare the movies for which Raja got national awards
Sagara Sangamam (Telegu) Salangi Oli in Tamil
Sindhu Bhairavi
Rudra Veena (Telegu) Unnal Mudiyum Thambi in Tamil
and compare it to ARRahman's awards :
Roja (different but is it that great ?)
Minsara Kanavu (does not even deserve to be a hit but gets a National Award)
There are literally dozens of movies for which Raja should have awards but has not :
16 Vayathinile (the best folk music you would hear in films)
Nizhalgal
Mudhal Mariyadhai
Koyil Pura
Nayagan
ARRahman's best score to date was in Thiruda Thiruda where his effort showed in every song. Since then he has been only downhill (even though they have managed to become hits).
Similarly Kamal's performance in Indhiyan. Indhiyan is a gimmicky movie - Kamal in a old man's getup. There was little or no acting involved. It was a hit but junk movie.
Compare it to movies for which Kamal did not get awards :
16 Vayathinile (Kamal's greatest performance in my opinion & also Bharathiraja's best movie)
Gunaa
Mahanathi

I would like to add "Kaadhal Oviyum" to the list of movies for which Ilaiyaraja deserved Best MD award. I feel no body else could have done justice to the musical album. Especially Raja brings class to the climax scene which is a song where all emotions relevant to the situation are brought out. Great work

The movie for which Hamsaleka and SPB got awards last year is ngana yOgi panchakshara gawai. (phew I hope I spelt it correctly.) It is a kannada movie.

I agree with Rajesh. 'kaadhal Oviya'thOda kadhaanaayaganE isai thaan.
Another point regarding movies for which Ilaiyaraja has awards. Two of them, Rudraveena and Sindhu Bhairavi, state clearly in the movie itself that the music is wonderful. The pre-release hype for ngana yOgi also did that. Rehman padangaLa paththi ellam sollavE vEndaam. Probably the award comittee needs to be told explicitly that the songs in a movie are "good". :)

I like to add Mouna raagam to this list. Even
after 10 yrs of continuous exposure to these songs we are not bored of them.
Talking abt life span of songs , songs by MSV or Raja has a better life time compared to ARRs songs
which is nothing but like fast food.
How many of us are still not tired with Roja or
pudhiya mugam songs?
Whereas I know many who still relish the sweetness
of songs from Annakili/payanangal mudivadhillai/kovil pura etc etc etc

Correct!! As regards life span of songs, ARR's songs are just myopic. Less said about ARR's music is better. There are songs that Raaja has churned out and they have made indelible impressions in our minds. To name a few, "Neethane Enthan Pon Vasantham" from Ninaivellam Nithya and "Andhi Mazhai " from Raaja Parvai. There is kind of undying sophistication in these songs that keep them going forever.
He has given songs packed in movies and again the list is endless. To name a few, Kadalorakkavidhaigal, Karagaattakkaran, Mouna Raagam, Keladi Kanmani, Avathaaram, Agni Natchathiram, Punnagai Mannan, etc., etc., And Mouna Raagam is my pick, always.
Awards ?? Awards in India dont deserve Raaja's music!!!

same about your last line.

The problem with national MD award they consider only the songs from the movies that
are nominated for some other category (like
Best picture, direction etc). If movies are nominated only for the songs alone Rajaa would
have got more than a dozen by now. The best
example is "ninaivellam nitya'.

Listen, Guys: All of you. I think I have found my United States soul mates. Anyone who has expressed such empathy towards Raja (seen in the afore listed responses) and the misgivings towards the numerous national awards he has missed, is someone who really is a connoissuer of music and also is the person who is enlightened on the prevailing downslide in musical tastes. So, may I join you all?
I am going to pour my heart out only a little for now and request that we guys talk about
doing something Rajaesque in the years to come.
Why Raja missed awards was in my opinion, that he was too busy with his work. I have watched him work at Prasad studios. I have seen his typical day. I am told he hardly relates hardly anything to people of power, politics and so on.
Awards would have been a distraction for him. So he courted very less of these people. You know, to get these awards how many goddamn members of the committee and administration you would have been familiar with.
In a way, I think it represents the political power Rahman pulls these days. He has plenty of time to be with influential people of all walks of life, today. He is hardly anywhere as prolific as Raja used to be for nearly 15 years. This Rahman produces, how many movies? 5 0r 7 per annum. Raja worked 17 hours a day for 15 years and averaged nearly 40 movies per year. He even holds a record for doing 55 movies in one year in two or three consecutive years!!!
So, we are glad raja is without those awards. Rahman has reached his level of incompetence in his Roja itself (just try singing 'Chinna chinna Asai' without the backings. Ok try another two times. how does it sound?, Man, I tell you, there is a limit)
So, awards are a good way of telling people to quit and stop producing noise!!!
There are several movies of Raja which a lot of people are not aware of. There are exexmplary songs that were played mostly by Radio Srilanka in the early 80's and late 70's. That was the end of the golden period of Raja, MSV and our many other great composers.
Anyway, Long Live Raja.

helo evryone...well i just read the above comments and most of you guys think illaya raja should win right? but being an indian "outside" India myself..i think its time for indian music to have international flavour..and i think rahman is doing his job graetly..for you information..even other races in my country adores Rahman's songs..they even have cover versions in their language! but no doubt ilaya raja is the maestro but new ideas and visions should be let free to flow..agree?

we are indians from malaysia and we strongly support our friend cellv. To our opinion the trend always changes. At this point, we have to learn to accept rahman is the new germ of all MD of India. Compared to other MD he's doing much better. He is not copy righting other MD tune {doing but not obvious} like Deva. For example; Kenny G's[kallamelam kathal valga = kathal kottai], lisa stanfield [vedan =vedan], micheal jackson [en manathai = kallori vaasal]. He like to stereotype the whole song. So rahman deserve some awards for bringing some changes in the film industry as raja did previously. This the fact!!!. We have accept this.
