  I think they can stick the same old 'puththamputhu kaalai' lyrics (Vairamuthu's) with SJ's voice ... would suit the Ad. also ...

  I think one particular advt agency is doing all these ads. There is a series of Britannia biscuit ads, using 3-4 old Tamil songs (IR & MSV) and I remember seeing few more ads - one for chappal, etc.
  Anybody else noticed this new trend in the advt arena?

  To be serious, More than the 'copy' or whatever these admakers did, I was pretty surprised to see an IR tune in a 'national' advertisement ... IR is supposed to be a failure in north, Isn't it ?

  I too saw it an felt deeply offended. I initially thought that they simply riped of the tune. But, these seems to be apattern. The "Kanne kalai mane" song, "chinna chinna asai" and this one...seems that some good brain is these in some AD agency.

  Now, they are turning the table other way. Puthum Puthu Kaalai... not just turning the table around, but also the breakfast. From NesCaafee to Kissan Jam with almost similar copyright ingredients. kadavuley, yenna seyya pokkirai not bad besh besh pannattum pannattum......

  No problem...its a matter of personal preference..In this context, i wud like to mention one incident...When IR finished composing 'raajavin ramanamaalai', and the album was ready to be released, many wished to go for a full fledged marketing effort..IR declined such a move saying,"Idhu poi sera vendiya idangalai thedi aduvaaga poi cherum...vilambaram vendam". I think we can apply that to all raja's songs in general :-)
  
  [In "vanathu tharagaiyyo, yaarival dhevadhaiyyo" there is a line - "idhu ellorkkum kidaikkaadha geedham..."...charu nivedita is unlucky :-)]

  I have noted an interesting characterstic of IR in the mid and late 90's.ie an film personalities who have given 1 0r 2 hits without IR's music ( SAR, Sirpy, Deva et al)ultimately failed when used IR or his family for his next movie.
  few examples :
  1)Cheran : Bharathi Kannama, Porkaalam (Deva) hits
  Desiaya Geetham (IR) flop
  
  2) Parthiban : Puthyia padhai (Chandrabose ) hit
  Pondatti thevai (his second film) flop
  
  3) Sundar C : Ullathai Allitha , Mettukudi ( Sirpy) hits
  NAm iruvar NAmakku Iruvar (Karthik raja)
  
  4) K.s.Ravikumar : Puriyatha Puthir ( SAR) , Cheran Pandiayan (Soundaryan) hits
  Sakthivel ( IR ) Flop
  
  5) Prabudeva : Indu ( Deva), Kadhalan (ARR) hits
  Rasaiya (IR ) flop
  
  6) Vijay : Senthurappandi, Rasigan,Deva,Vishnu (alll hit by deva)
  Chandralekha (vijay and vanitha vijaya kumar, remember?) was a flop

  one doesn't have to make a sensational negative statement to get noticed. If he had given the title as 'i like Nasret Fateh Ali Khan or L.Subramaniam, I wonder how many would have been keen to read the article. In the end when he talks about why he likes L Subbu or Nasret, you wonder if the purpose of the article was to tell the world what he likes or if it is just throwing popular names to justify his dislike for IR. He doesn't come across as someone who has much knowledge in music and if you ask me, the main purpose of this article is to be sensational, provoke and in turn get some attention.

  both your observations and deductions are wrong. although a part of your observations may be correct, they are only statistical coincidence, rather than anything else.
  first of all, we have to decide if you are talking about hit of music alone or the movie. Then we have to talk about whether the music was responsible for the failure of movies. and then, whether the said persons gave hit after these movies
  
  
  1. Cheran- i accept that the first two movies were hits. desiya geetham definitely had good songs and it was a movie which was as good as the previous movies as well. the reason of its failure, was that although the movie was made with good intentions, the cm in the movie was made to resemble a living cm and thus he antagonised that whole party. everyone knows, that cherans career was derailed after this movie because of politis and he had to suffer a lot before coming up. his subsequent movies with deva and vidyasagar were not great hits
  2.parthiban- the movie after that, sugamana sumaigal(chandrabose) was a disaster and the movie after that ulle vezhiye(ilayaraja) was parthibans biggest hit till date.
  3. sundar c has given many flops before that two movies and after nam iruvar and namakku iruvar. the songs of this movie were very nice and were hits. the movie was a flop
  4. puriyadha pudhir, was definitely not a hit
  
  5. indhu was not a hit. kadhalan was a hit. rasaiyas songs (masthana, kadhal vanile) were hits. and subsequent prabhu devas films were all flops.
  6. the films rasigan, deva and vishnu were semi porn movies made by sa chandrasekar for his son. and chandralkeha was a movie which did not confirm to this trend . so it was a flop. music was not the reason
  
  so your findings are not consistent and they have nothing to do with ilayarajas familys music. the music was good. the films were failure for other reasons
