I Strongly Prefer Vaalee & no body else..
His lyrics r very simple & at the same time very meaning ful ..
There r many samples..
To mention few: Anbulla maan vizhiye, Amma Yendrazhaikatha , Thottal poo malarum , Ven mathi ven mathiye nillu
etc..

Dear Raj,
I amazed by how Vaalee handeled Thirukural's second chapter 'vAn chirapu' in 'chinna chinna thOral enna'. Wow what a master piece. Even 'enna vilai azhagE' is one of the best from him. My vote strongly goes to Valee in current Lyricist.

I think Mu.Mehta and Pulamaipithan have their shares too in the credits!
Mu.Mehta has shown great poetic sense in both folk and urban lyrics and Pulamaipithan is known for his complicated lyrics with a lot of inner meanings.
Examples :
---------------
1) Chinna Maharani (Kutti) - Mu.Mehta
2) Edhilum Ingu (Bharathi) - Pulamaipithan

My Vote goes to Vaalee.,
IMO, Both kaNNadasan and Vairamuthu tried to show their brilliance in film songs, But Vaalee was always down to earth, Lived with his characters and wrote for them ! Simple and Sweet lyrics, He is my choice anyday !
raj,
Ethilum Ingu is by Pulamaip piththan

I think Pazhani Barathi does a good job too:
"Ennai Thalatta Varuvalo" and "Nandhavana Kuyile..." are good examples.
But I think he too gets carried away with writing "hi tech" lyrics... I think "alps malai" was written by him :)

Deepak,
Manytimes I feel PazhaniBharathy can become next Vaalee - His language is very simple (I am not talking about his kuzappamaana kavithaikaL here ;-) 'Nandhavanak kuyilee' is a fine example. 'Sollaamalee Yaar Paarththathu' and 'Aaanandham aanandham paadum' are my other fav.s

I suggest you go through all postings of threads on kannadasan from the archives before you conclude anything. You can certainly say vaali has written many songs that suit the situations with simple lyrics by giving examples. But taking credits away from a legendary lyricist who has proved his edge for over two decades is something close to blasphemy. Kanndasan has written very simple lyrics befitting situations besides conveying the message in a naive manner to the masses. Please spare kannadasan in this comparison thread as he belongs to a totally different genre when movies had demanding situations and he was able to deliver in an apt manner.

"Lyrics aptly written for movie situations and
simplicity".. that's what Kannadhasan's speciality is! There are several examples where
Kannadhasan has conveyed a whole story within a
few simple lines.
Vaali is also good, although he cannot be compared
with Kannadhasan. I am not too familiar with VM's
works to comment on his ability to write simple
lyrics aptly for movie situations.
