BTW - the above posts are from an email I had written to a member of this forum named VENGAYAM. I had fortunately saved that email. Vengayam Sir - where are you? :-)

avr,
Or take the
example of a KJY-VJ duet "killikil..." in Malayalam - its either in raagam or in raasaleela,
Just happened to look at this discussion on Salil Choudhury. This song is from Raasaleela and it is one of those songs that have always haunted me by the richness of its melody. Incidentally another song from Salil also had the same effect on me (Thingazh maalai Venkudaiyan... from an unfinished tamil film). Salil could produce great music that could get deep into your heart so that it would lay there all the time submerged, even when you forgot them in course of time. All they would need was a spark to get into conscious memory, and you jive through the great experience of good music, just as great music always is. He was in a different league among light music composers I must say.

Viswesh Obla: It is Kkiliye Kili Kkiliye. It was very popular in TNadu too in the mid 70s. The impact of that song is everlasting. (It is the most beautiful harvest song of all time imho, the second festival song is another SC song Kaale Munnottu Munnottu Kaaley!) In TN, people know only two malayalam songs and both are Salilda's! The other one is of course the Maanase Mayine varu!!!

Vishvesh Obla, you have touched upon a song which I too can never forget- 'Thingal maalai venkudaiyaal'- from the unreleased tamil film -'Karumbu'. What a wonderful composition- the lines are from Silappadhigaaram, and Yesudas touches one's heart with his sorrow drenched voice. Each repetition of the line 'Nadandhaai vaazhi Kaveri' is just enchanting. And Salilda makes the interlude music really memorable.
Another wonderful album by Salilda is 'Paruvamazhai', dubbed from the Malayalam 'Madanotsavam' stg. Kamal and Zarina Wahab. Here he uses the mesmerising voice of S Janaki to create a timeless melody- 'Then malar kannigal maaranai nesikkum'.
Even in his last film in tamil- 'Dhoorathu Idi muzhakkam' (which incidentally, was Vijayakanth's first film as hero), Salilda composed a scintillating duet, which is popular to this day-more than 20 years after the film sank without a trace- 'Ullam ellaam thallaaduthe'- KJY & SJ.

I feel Salil and IllaRaaja are the only 2 great composers who can capture the tenderness of a flower trying to bloom and caressing wind.
Listen to Salilda's great numbers in Malayalam film Madanotsavam(especially songs sung by SJanaki).
Listen to songs like 'Putham pudu Kaalai'(Alaigal Oyevadillai) ,
'naadam EnJeevanae'(Kaadal Oviyam),
'Saami kitte solli vachu' film Avarampoo.
The greatness of these 2 composers could be felt by closing the eyes and listening to these above mentioned songs

mythila, those songs are from 'manitharil iththanai nirangaLA' a forgettable movie. The composer is Shyam however. He was Salil's assistant for sometime and hence the similarity in the presentation style.

I was listening to the two songs in 'Air Hostess' the other day, a 1980 Mallu release. Pretty darn good if you ask me! The first song may be one of the sweetest melodies I've heard in my existence! Listen to it, I'm sure you're liable to be hooked.

purv, your broader insight can help in a thread recently born probably when the planets went off on blind dates: "MOST AMAZING PIECE OF MUSIC EVER COMPOSED!" Please pour your heart out there about Air Hostess also (ur talking of Unaru Unaru Usha Devathey & one more duet! Yes wonderful tunes.) Just try to elimidate Yare Yaar from the scene.
