I often thought that the 3 stanza songs are just tooo long. Surprised to see that the stanza thing has not much relation with the duration! e.g.`Germaniyin'(2 stanza) is 5 min 36 sec compared to `azhagiya kannE'(4.51) and `aymbathilum Asai varum' (4.34)
Brings the question: what factors make the MD (or whoever is responsible) determine the song's duration?

Taking the case of `Germaniyin' (what a lovely song!), I feel Raja is so thrilled with the nucleus of this composition that he kept adding the ornaments till it reached it final duration! The prelude itself is about 45 seconds! Great interludes (both between stanzas and within stanzas) make one forget the length...It appears like Raja never wanted this song to end...both SPB/SJ are committed to sing the `papa papapapapa' before closing which was then followed by the bell sound....
I think this is one song whose length has been increased by Raja, with no demand from any other department! Simply because he chiselled it longer since he enjoyed every note!

hi eden,
i think what you have said holds good for Ilaya nila. The tail part juts goes on and on...i'm sure IR, just like those who love this song, did not want it to end.
one thing that IR changed in TFM was the repetitive singing of stanzas so common in songs of the 50s and 60s, which made for tiresome listening.

My credulous theory is that three stanzas in songs with lengthy interludes add sustaining impact to melodies as they leave a deep impact on the minds of listeners. There are innumerable examples of this types from early IR period between '76 and '81.
There are many songs from 60's with three stanzas having different interludes as in ponnezhil poothathu puthuvAnil (kaLankarai viLakkam) with culminating emotions interweaved with some amazing interludes.

BTW, what is the actual duration of `mAn kanda sorganal'? (47 nAtkaL) This song has 4 stanzas but some of them without interlude at all...someone who has this number can post the duration pls..
I think during the days of small size 45 RPM records, this song and similar ones will have a `idai vElai' since they occupy both sides of the disk:-)
