shysun, the word "best" when applied to raaja's work cannot but turn up at least dozens of instances, be it in regard to songs or bgm clips.
i do agree in a general way, though, that that era (late 70s - early 80s) was unparalleled even considering raaja's mammoth musicality (exceptions do exist, albeit, and quite a few of them too), but it is as if in that particular period raaja had a perennial store of mindblowing music which hw could harness in an instant.
i would therefore say that jhonny was "one among" his best work, but "the best"? no, it just wouldn't be fair to many, many other absolute gems....

I Very much agree with this thread. Johny is one of the best by IR.
Especially in BGM of Title, when both Rajini is running etc ...
One of the Highlight of the movie is
KAATRIL ENTHAN JEEVAN ... - song by SJ and Sridevi's reaction - Climax song - Just beautiful.
Thanks for bringing out my memories of this movie

I totally agree and till date my personal favorite work of IR is Jhonny. For that sake, its the best score Rajini has ever had in his life time with movies. Classic songs and BGM & excellent performances by Rajini and Sridevi. I can bet for all in the world, IR can never ever come up with a score like this (or any MD ;-)

Jhony is a diamond on IR's crown. Still all the songs are fresh and good.

thanks folks,it is very happy too see shared sentiments, the main bgm track of johny ,which is used in romantic interludes, while rajini gets sugar cane juice and watermelons etc for sreedevi are just stunning ,this particular scene is simple but the music given elevates the scene to all time favourites, everyone has his wishes and my favourite close at heart is johny and i feel good to find people sharing the same, post your experiences of "johny".

MD excels when the director is really great. Mahendran is one such.

Another contender - Mouna ragam. Songs as well as BGM are unparallelled

Weel said, raghavan. I recall the words of GV , the prouver and brother of Mani, soon after the release of Thalapath.." we could not get a better story than Mahabharath. This film was just vilence but elevtaed to great heights by IR.
I would say that after mouna raham , only Roja contained less violence in Mani's films.

Mahendran Raaja's combo starts with Mullum malarum, Uthiri Pookal, Pootatha Pootukkal, Nenjathai Killathe, Johny,Nandu, Metti, kai kudukkum kai.
In Metti a song called " Metti oli " sung by the Maestro was composed in raga "JOG" the only by any music director. For mahendran it was always a classic raaja. .Any other movies ?
