I just listened to the songs from this
movie at raaga.com.

Terrible songs.

Could you give me some more info on this movie ?
year ? Dir. ? actors ?

  starring :prabhu and revathi
  directed by : Fazil
  
  almost all of Fazil's movies have had Ilaiyarajah composing the music for it, and arangetra velai may not be as brilliant as some of the other tunes scored by raja but "aaghaiya vennilave" by K.J Yesudass and (who sings the female part) is superb... also the some of the BGM in that movie is amazing....
  
  esp: the bit right at the end when prabhu suspects that revathi might have done a runner with the money on him and when she returns, the guilt on his face, and revathi's expressions... and this haunting music in the background.. a sheer delight.

  Uma RamaNan is the female singer in 'Agaya veNNilaave'., One of her best songs IMO.,
  
  As far as I remember, all fazil movies in tamil had IR's score (Except dubbed movies like Harikrishnans)

  All these movies had very good songs, I think IR gets too emotional when he composes for people like fazil who make stories which are based on human relations and feelings, Thats why he is coming up with great numbers like 'Poovee Poochchudavaa'., 'Chinna chinna Rojap poovee'., 'Bommuk kutti ammaavukku aaraaroo'., 'poongaaviyam'., 'Pazamuthirch choolai', 'PooPookkum Maasam', 'Aagaaya veNNilaavee', 'Anbe vaa arugilae', 'Ennaith thaalaatta varuvaaLoo', 'Oru pattaampoochchi', 'Iravu pagalaith theda' and many more .... (Strange coincidence - Most of these songs are sung by KJY :-)
  
  I love Fazils' movies and IR's songs with him., To be frank, I am very upset that today's tamil producers are not believing in this fellow and giving him movies - when Kathalukku mariyaathai was a hit, everybody were behind him, now that KaNNukkuL nilavu is a flop, nobody goes to him., So sad :-(

  That's a beautiful number in Arangetra Velai...though it is a short piece.

  Arangretra velai is one of the better pictures and two of it's songs are really great. AgAyavennilave" is simply superb. So, is the BGM. I think that I have watched the movie 4 times.

  I think Fazil suggests, and suggests strongly, that KJY should sing at least one song in his movies. That is why IR continues to assign songs to KJY in Fazil movies, while he has forgotten SPB.
  
  BTW, I don't consider 'adidaa mELaththa' (kaNNukkuL nilavu) as a song and it is an insult for SPB to sing it.

  Though SPB was not used upto the level of KJY, he was given good songs too in Fazil-IR movies like:

  Raaga.com had 4 songs from Arangetra Velai
  
  1) Aagaya Vennilavae by KJY, Uma Ramanan
  2) Gundu Onnu by Mano
  3) Maamaanukkum by Mano, Chitra
  4) Thai Ariyatha by Mano
  
  Aagaya Vennilava is a decent song, not great IMHO
  Songs 2 and 3 are downright abominable.
  About 4), it's alright. The charanams (the firsrt one by Sailaja, I think) are noisy.. IR repeated the arrangement in the first interlude in a couple of telugu songs ( in Chiranjeevi's Stuartpuram Police station ). The second charanam ( Chorus ) is irritating.. This is not too short a piece, BTW
  By no means is this the finest short song like some said above..
  
  To call Arangetra Velai as one of Raja's finest is I think an insult to Raja
  
  Is this a early 1990s movie by any chance ?
  These songs ( and the usage of Mano ) remind of that era..
  
  I haven't heard of this movie before; Haven't heard the songs before.. I haven't seen the movie, so haven't been influenced by it in anyway..
  
  and I am not terribly sad I haven't heard of these songs earlier

  I like Arangerta velai very much. If you consider it as a album, it may not be great. Given a comedy movie and silly comic situations in the movie.. these songs are realy good.

  Where you got this news ? I will be more than happy if this is true and IR is the MD., Fazil can bring-out the best from IR.,
  
  But my guess is, even if it comes to IR, he will redirect it to KR/YSR as he did for Nandha :-(

  Good/Bad music is a very subjective thing.
  
  I agree with many of the other contributers in this thread that Arangetra Velai has a few good numbers by IR, 'Aagaya Vennilavae' being the pick of the lot. To my auditory cortex and to many others it may sound very melodious & it is perfectly alright for you to perceive it differently.But do not use words like terrible just because YOU don't like it....just think it over....most things in life are like

  Aagaya Vennilave song is very good. But other songs in that movie are not so good. Gundu Onnu takes the second place. Arangketra Velai is IR's Thenali.

  IR's Thenali ? I doubt whether thenali has any 'aagaaya veNNilaavee' - no alangaaram, simple melody !

  Chandaiyellam Onnum Illai. Comparision with the following factors - Comedy Movie - Big MDs
  
  Aahaya Vennilave is the only good song in AV. Thenali has 3 to 4 average songs. Better don't compare each and every mm. :-)

  I think the songs in Harikrishnans are very special. I love the one that Baby Shyamili sings while she and her friends are riding on bike.
