Have you watched the song "Thaen unnum vandu
maamalarai kandu"(Amara deepam)? I happen to
watch yesterday on SUN TV. The male voice is
given by A.M. Raja as you know. I was quite
surprised to know he has sung for Sivaji Ganesan!
I couldn't help laughing after seeing this scene.
Later I realised howmuch we associate TMS'
voice with Sivaji(and MGR too). I wish to know if you
have seen any such unusual combinations.
The other one I recollect is "vadivelan manasu vachaan"
from Thaayillamanl naanillai. Kamal sings this
song in the movie. Voice: TMS.

Hasn't Chandra Babu sung for Sivaji in one film?
 Kalyaanam panniyum Brahmachari?

I find Ilayaraja singing for Rajini and other heroes unusual. His voice suits Janakraj and Murali. :).

Ofcourse Seerkaazhi has sung for MGR. I am not sure whether you want to consider that unusual. The movie is chakkravarthi thirumagal. The song is pretty famous too, but I cannot recall it.

In a related vein - has Ilayaraja ever sung for Kamal or Prabhu? I cannot recall any song immediately. I know that he has sung for the other top heroes - Rajini, Satyaraj, Vijaykanth, Karthik etc. All these should rank as instances of unusual pairings. :)

Regding Ilaiyaraja singing for kamal - In 16
 vayadhinile the song 'solam vidhakkaiyile'comes
in the back ground(when the titles are shown
 with Kamal in the scene).

 Raja has sung a song
for Prabhu in 'en uyir kannama'( i dont remember
 the song)

Now coming to the main topic:

PBS,AMRaja and Sirgazhi has sung for MGR. Paasam
has a good song by PBS(paal vannam paruvam kandu)
and if im not wrong 'thirudadhe'also has a song
 by PBS(en arugil nee irundhal).

Hey wat abt SPB singing for Sivaji?I find it quite
 odd too

As far as I remember Ilayaraja sings the song poompaarayil pottu vaitha poonkuruvi in en uyir kannamma. But that song comes in the background and doesn't count as having sung for Prabhu, just as sOLam vidhaikkayilE doesn't count as having sung for Kamal.

A song in this category I could think of is MSV's "siva sambo" from 'Ninaithaale Inikkum' for Rajinikanth.

I do not know if ChandraBabu has sung for Sivaji, but there is one song where another playback singer has given voice for ChandraBabu - K.J. Yesudas in 'Parakkum Paavai' with TMS and LR Eswari - "sugam yethile ethayathilaa"

If you want to match voices to actors, I think that concept in gone in Rehman's era, where singers like Suresh Peters, UnniKrishnan have sung for actors which do not match their voices.

Chandra Babu sang for Sivaji in Kalyanam Panniyum Brahmachari. The song is 'Jolly Life Jolly Life, Thaali kattina jolly life' with Sivaji and TRRamachandran romping on screen.

By the way are any of you guys TRRamachandran fan ? I am a big fan of his. (BPB, Sabapathi, Manamagan Thevai etc).

C.S Jayaraman (fondly called as Mayana Bagavdhar) has sung for Sivaji in Pudhayal.
Also when Yesudas sang for Sivaji for the first
time in Dr.Siva (malarae kurinji malarae) it sounded a bit odd. (later he sang quite a few
 for sivaji (kavarimaan etc).

 Can anybody beat this ?

Sri Vidya for Disco Shanti !

 Song - Sandhai Bajaaru
 Mama Konjam Usharu
 Film - Vigneshwar (I Think).

When SriVidya was asked to sing a song, she was supposedly thrilled and had assumed that it would be a classical song. After all she was the daughter of MLV. She got quite a shock when she learnt that the song was a total vamp tappanguthu song for Disco Shanti.

It was too late to back out and she went ahead and sang the song !

 has sung a song too..

Talking of unusual voices, there is this song
"naan enbathu nee allavO dEva dEvi.." in film
"soora samhaaram". This excellant duet is sung
by Arunmozhi and Chitra. Arunmozhi has sung for
 Kamal..

Somebody had asked if SPB had sung for Shivaji. Ofcourse yes.. Who can forget 'Pooppoley Un Punnagayil" in Kavarimaan and 'Kaalam Maaralaam Nam Kaadal Maarumo ?' in Vaazhkai (Shivaji with Ambika). I will write more songs when I remember.

How about Pottu vaitha Mugamo from 'Sumathi en Sundari', 'Yamuna Nadhi inge' from Gowravam, I could name more where SP sings for Shivaji. I would think SP singing for Thengai Srinivasan ( is that right !) in 'Anbe Sangitha' (Chinna Puraa ondru) was rather odd !.
Did SP sing for Suruli Rajan in Veetukku veedu Vaasappadi ?.

SPB for suruli song is "konjam othungu naan thaniyaa pesanum unnoda". Only SPB could've sung it so well.
 It's from a not-so-famous movie.

vinnodum mugilodum vizhaiyadum vennivale - this song was sung by mayaan baagavadhar chidambaram jeyaraman for Sivaji. This voice was quite unusual and did not suit Sivaji.

Masthana Masthana - This song was sung by Bavatharini in the film "Rasaiyya". It did not suit
actress Roja as the voice seemed to be very immatured for her.

Oh, you think CSJeyaraman singing for Sivaji was
unusual. Sivaji felt exactly the opposite way
when, in those early days of Sivaji's career,
CSJ used to be the "accepted" ghost voice for
Sivaji in his first several movies (Parasakthi,
Anbu, Paavai Vilakku, Pudhayal etc.). When, in
the movie, "Thookku Thookki", the MD, G Ramanathan
wanted to introduce the young TMS to sing for
Sivaji, it seems Sivaji was very annoyed and
felt that changing from CSJ to TMS would not
be accepted by the audience and so the movie
might flop. But, somehow GR convinced Sivaji
and went ahead with TMS. Perhaps because of this
challenge, GR put-in special effort for that
movie, and TMS sang with a special "gaNeer"
voice, and the movie became a big hit, the
music and songs being important reasons.
Everyone can guess what happened after that:
CSJ had to leave way for TMS in all Sivaji
 movies; of course, Viswanathan-Ramamurthy had
a special attachment for TMS and so TMS grew
nicely in that environment after that.

No one mentioned KJJ singing for MGR. I thought
 that was quite odd!

Except the comment about SriVidya singing for
Disco, all of us have been giving examples
of male singers-actors combination only. Why
is it that we accept, in general, any female
singer singing for any actress? For example,
even though S Janaki used to be the "usual"
ghost-voice for Vijayakumari, P Susheela singing
for her was also accepted and no one felt it
was unusual in any way. What is the reason for
 this?

KJJ and Jeyachandran have sung for Jaishankar in
Oru kodiyil iru malargal: kannanin sannidhiyil
endhan kanmani punnagaiyil is the song. If you
think SPB singing for Jaishankar/Gemini Ganesan/
Ravichandran is odd then a number of examples
 can be listed.

I feel Kamal singing for himself is odd. Any
 opinions?

Why do you think Kamal singing for himself is odd? Starting from "Ninaivo oru paravai" in "Sigappu Rojakkal" to "Inji Iduppazhagi" in "Devar Magan" to "Marugo Marugo" in "Sadhi Leelavathy", he seems to have done an excellent job.

I still find no comments on female singers singing for
actresses. If you take LR Eswari, I think her
voice doesn't suit any actress (except, say for
"thodaiyazhagi" CID Sakunthalaa, in all those
 cabaret songs). Examples:

 1. LRE humming for Saroja Devi in "kallellaam
 maaNikka kallaagumaa" (aalaya maNi)
 2. LRE humming for KR Vijaya in "pavaLa kodiyilE
 muththukkaL pOttaal" (paNam padaiththavan)
 3. LRE singing for Kanchana in "pattaththu raaNi"
 (sivandha maN)
 4. LRE singing for Padmini in "kadavuL thandha
 iru malargaL" (iru malargaL)
 5. LRE singing for Jeyapradha in NinaiththaalE
 inikkum. (song starting "aanandha ...")

But somehow, LRE singing for Jeyalalitha seems to
be quite suiting; in fact, LRE sang a number of
songs for J in many MGR movies for which MSV was
the MD, and all those songs were good hits.

And then, what about P Susheela singing for
 Ramaprabha in "veNNilaa nEraththilE vENugaanam"
 (avasara kalyaaNam), MS Rajeswari singing
for Savithri in "kaakkaa kaakkaa mai koNdaa"
(Mahadevi), and P Susheelaa singing for Kutti
Padmini in Kuzhandhaiyum Dheivamum? Can we make
a lst of such odd combinations?

Shahul Hameed sang for Sathyaraj in the song "Senthamizh naattu thamizhachiye" from Vandi Cholai Chinrasu. I rate this as one of the most unusual (atrocious) combinations.

In fact, ARR makes some of the worst combinations of singers for actors. Actually, I don't think he selects the singers for a song, on the basis of the actors. He just selects them on the basis of the song, no matter on whom it is picturized.
