Dear TFM-iites,
Have you ever noticed that in IR's songs, the interludes (gap music) is so apt that the feeling and the mood and in fact the tone of the song is also rendered. For example
1. Paadava Un paadalai (Naan Paadum Paadal).
The gap music of this song is so fast and definitely picturises that some thing bad is going to happen. Incidentally, during this song, the car meets with an accident. But actually, we shud hear this before seeing the movie to appreciate the discussion. Any lay man can instantly say that the song is heading towards a tense situation. More songs that depict emotions,
* Paadu Nilave thaen kavithai (Udhaya Geetham)
Heroine pining for the hero.
* Sangeetha megam then sindhum ..( a typical jolly mood depiction)
* Pani vizhum iravu ( Mouna raagam)
A typical sensuous 'close' song.
* Thaene then paandi meenae (udaya geetham)
Oops - what a lullaby.
* Raakku muthu raakku ( Ejamaan)
What a way to depict a village celebration.
Incidentally, not a single MD has been able to depict emotions and bring about situational tunes and feelings like IR. (after 1976)
In fact, other MDs have never understood the situation of the song like IR does. It requires a great amount of involvement to imagine oneself in that situation and from then on, the tunes start flowing.
Can anyone add to this list??
Sharma.

mr. sharma,
this topic overlaps strongly with the 'songs that touch us' thread, IMO. many of the emotional IR songs have already been discussed there in detail. perhaps we can change the topic to interlude music in IR songs that best convey the mood.
seduction : IR puts to best use vioins and trumpets in these kind of situations as evident in 'sivaraathiri'.
also 'adikuthu kuliru' in mannan is another example of violin and trumpet use.
sogam: 'paadi parantha kili', 'enna enna kanavu'
etc.
songs in a boat : real beautiful nos like 'thaalatuthe vaanam', 'chithira sevvaanam' etc. where the interlude music is excellent.
'rain' songs : IR is a specialist. 'pon vaanam paneer thoovun' from indru nee nalai naan.
'pothikittu oothuthadi vaanam' from paayum puli, are slow nos.
'oho megam vandhudho', 'aathaadi ammaadi',
'vaan megam' etc. are fast paced nos for the same situation.
music competition or stage performance : one of the most difficult situations for composing, because from where can u derive inspiration to score for the same situation movie after movie.
but IR has done this for countless mohan movies.

hi guys, this is sevu from New york.
It is a pleasure saying about IR.IR is not only famous for situatuonal tunes, but he is also famous for his his backgroud scores in his films.
one good example is mouna raagam.
you can listen to the backgroud music when karthik
comes. The movie goes quick during his scenes and
there would be a sudden change in the background music after the flashback showing the sad mood of
revathi.
Another good example is dalapathi. The train sequences where srividhya leaves rajni and also scenes where both of them turn back after hearing the train, honking .
ONly one can match him up and that is none other than himself.
He is just great

Hi
Can anyone tell me what the word polaey means in this context: oru vana vil polaey, enn vaazhviley vandhai (kaatriniley varum geetham)
Thanks

Rajina,
Polaey means 'like'. The translation for oru vana vil polaey, enn vaazhviley vandhai, will be roughly 'You came into my life like a rainbow'.

Hi Friends,
It's time we recognised that IR is the only person who gives equal importance to comedy as an emotion and as a song situation. Just have a ear at these songs which though convey a sense of comedy have great compositional skills. In fact, IR is the first and only person till now who broke the feeling, "comedy paattukku idhu podhum" and brought it to the center stage:
1) Maamaavukku Kuduma - Punnagai Mannan
2) En Pathiramaathu - En Bommukutti Ammavukku
3) Mappillai Mappillai - Paasap Paravaigal
4) Namma Boss - Naangal
5) Gundu Onnu - Arangetra Velai
6) Ooru Vittu - Karagaattakkaaran
7) Anne Anne - Kozhi Koovuthu
8) Pachaiyappa - Thendral Varum Theru
9) Maamanukku - Velaikkaaran
10) Summa Thodavum - Mudhal Vasantham
and many more etc., etc.,.......

I watched Veera Thalattu in Sun TV recently. There are some notable scenes where Raja has shown his creativity and brought out the mood of the situation very well.
One situation is that the bad man (Rajkiran's bro Santhana Bharathi) tried to kill Rajkiran for usurping his land. He plans to poison him the next day. This song comes in the previous night / next morning where Rajkiran and Radhika 'konjify' their son. There is a song 'AaLappirantha magarAsA' sung by IR. IR's voice and the pathos brought out in this song is unbelievable to me. He brings alive the mood of the situation (to depict the impending danger to their family) very well. Raja has used a sort of Thalattu tune with matching music PLUS Western Classical to show the event that is about to happen shortly, which is IMO, unattemped by anybody till now. It is just superb and you have to listen to the song AND see the movie to appreciate it.
The movie has got an excellent BGM which sustains the tempo of the story which is otherwise a routine movie.

A similar situation was tuned for Walter veRRivEl - ammA ammA enum AruyirE. Here, a clip of the baby's crying in the song hints at the impending danger facing the baby (it is poisoned to death later on). IR has done a very good job in making film songs integrated with the film..new MDs are turning away or preferring to ignore this aspect of the song..
