Hey guys, I recently heard the absolutely brilliant, terrific song - "Janani, Janani". It gives me the shivers every time I hear it. Clearly, IR's best song that he has sung. I had a question regarding the movie itself - "Thai Moogambigai" which this song was in. Have any of you guys seen it? I haven't got a chance to see it yet. A friend told me that Sivakumar, Saritha, Karthik, Sujatha, K.R. Vijaya, and so on, was in this movie. Is it true? Anyway, I like to know the movie is. Any good? Please let me know.

Thaai Mookambigai was realeased in 1982, with big cast as you mentioned. In addition, Manorama, Nizhalgal ravi, Poornima Jayaram (paired with Sivakumar), Thengai srinivasan, Major sunderrajan (faithful poojari of the Goddess), Murali mohan (Acted as Saint Adhi sankaracharya).
It was kudumbam separation and re-union at teh climax story with a devotional touch. Saritha, Sivakumar and Karthik were children of KRV. After KRV's death, brought up by Sujatha, due to some reeaosn get separated.
Saritha is dumb girl. Siva gets the hand of Poornima jayaram. Karthik with Sasikala (I guess). At the end, all three childern with the blessings of Thai Moogambigai gets unioned (identification: just one pendent in their chain) at the Moggambigai temple. Ellam subham.
Excellent songs by IR.
1. Janani Janani - by IR, Deepan Chakravarthy, Krishnachandran.
2. Cheenaththu pattu meni ilam chittu meni - beautiful duet by P. Susheela and MVD for Poornima and Sivakumar. PS sings so sweetly loevly..
3. Thaayey moogambikey - Seergazhi Govindarajan, Dr.Balamurali Krishna, M S Viswanathan, MVD (Sivakumar) and SJ (Saritha). In this song, all first 3 giants appear on the stage together singing in praise on Goddess Saraswathi, Lakshmi and Durga (all 3 are in the form Mookambigai). Saritha tharathara-nnu KRV-vai izhuthu kondu Oduvaar
4. Isai arasi ennaLum naaney - by PS (KRV), S Rajeshwari (Carnatic singer for Manorama) and SJ (Saritha). Excellent paatu potti song. Finally KRV indirectly wins blessing the voice to Saritha. Swara potti between PS and SR was damn good whereas the humming by SJ for Saritha was classic piece. Saritha's reaction was very significant which always deserved applause from the audience.
5. A small bit by PS (KRV) – VeNba starting with Katrathu Kaiyalavu....
6. Pasikku soru by P Jayachandran and SP Sailaja

The song "Isai arasi ennaLum naaney " is a really Rare composition, showing Ilayaraja's Carnatic brilliance - It is in the Ragam SALLABAM or SOORYA, whcih is it's other name. A wonderful composition.
Also, "Jenani Jenani", which is a world reknowned composition, which in beautifully set in the Ragam KALYANI. Another Ilayaraja great!

If I were an MD, I would ask all the TFM singers wannabe to sing the 'Isaiyarasi' song for prequalification!!!This song is an acid test for singers.Great work by PS,SJ,Rajeshwari .

No song on Karthik, if I remember correct.
Janani Janani was a "asareeri" song when The saint adhi sankaracharya installs Mookambigai moolasthaanam. Murali Mohan acted as the Saint.

Mythila, I second you... it was a wonderful song runs into 6+ minutes. Starting aalabanai by S Rajeswari and PS was terrific. In any song, you get a interlude between charanam's. But here, you do not see that and it was fully raaga viLayaattu by the singers.
Rajeswari sings for the "thimir" piditha singer acted by Manorama. That "Garvam" was well shown by Rajeswari in her voice.
Of course, Suseela for KRV did a grand magnificiant piece with the as usual "Gambeeram" and Clarity (Gana sudhamaana saareeram). Perfect diction in always her asset and she demonsrated it in this song too. KRV-kku gana kachidha kural PS' voice.
SJ, for Saritha. Saritha blessed by KRV, with her fingers rubing Saritha's throat to give her voice. She screams (in surpise and shock) "amma ammaaaa.... ammmmmmaaa".. Then the aalbanai / humming starts. You forget what you do when you listen to this. A masterpiece by SJ. After this, SJ voice becomes bit shrilled but the effect of the bhakthi/adirchi kalanda aachairyam + "ennalum paada mudigiradhey" endra perumai.... all these were shown by SJ.
I can never forget this song in my life...

The idea of an "acid test" is a good one. One can already see a host of current singer careers charred...
But, to be thorough: When was the last time IR himself composed something on the lines of "Isaiarasi"? And what sort of test would one prescribe for MDs?

Logic idikkuthe. We're not asking for Suseela or Janaki to sing 'Isaiyarasi' to the same effect 20 years down the line, are we? I take it that the 'acid test' applies to the context of performance at the prime of one's career.

Naaz, IR did come up with a better 'Devotional paadalgal' work in another bakthi padam Ezhumalaiyan mahimai , released sometime between 1996-1997. But it went unnoticed as IR's commercial value had gone down .
Thai mookambigai also has one SPS solo 'malai naadu endan veedu' with some funny african jungle beats!!!
IMO, janani is just another good song in Kalyani.
IR has done better Kalyani raaga based songs than Janani.
Ex: Devan thanda veenai
Vizhiye vilakondru etru
Poomaalaiye thol serava
Nadhiyil aadum poovanam
Sundari kannaal oru seidi
Vazhividu vazhividu in Paatupaadava(I have never heard such an unusual, novel handling of Kalyani raaga in any song)

Logic sariyanathey, suresh. The vocal chords / breath control are affected by the age of the artiste, for sure. But age does not hinder the composer. On the contrary, age can only add to the depth of the musician's pursuit.
Compositional challenges on the lines of Isaiarasi and other similar songs from that era are all but rare these days. And IR has also adapted to the times. This is not to say that IR has has lost the gift for such challenges. Only the audience isn't into such classical virtuosity - that's all.

Mythila: Is "Poomaalaiye thol serava" really in Kalyani? I think it has lots of anya swaras!

Yes Angeli, it is Kalyani based with lot of anyaswaras. Yet, it is a great composition and I heard it uses vocal counterpoints

I second mythila. I imagine more 'introspection' to the song would help me appreciate it more. But for now, it's kind of bland. I guess 'Janani' can be likened to 'Oru Aalampoovu' in Punniyavathi. It cannot really be appreciated without knowing the technical aspects of the song.

"When was the last time IR himself composed something on the lines of "Isaiarasi"? "
Naaz, I find "ennai enna seidhaai" from Ivan to be a challenging one similiar to "Isaiarasi". One of the very songs where IR has put in some good amount of thought in recent times. But these days the trend has shifted towards inviting different CM artistes to render such songs. I would have preferred Chithra or VJ singing such songs. They would have probably had a greater appeal and the songs would have been received well by a bigger audience. With SudhaR, the general comments in TFMDF were that it sounded "too classical".

Just after I made that comment, it dawned on me that I was overlooking Ivan. I did enjoy the songs from this film, but found the "vintage" quality lacking. That said, you are right, "ennai enna seidhaai" is perhaps in the same league as Isaiarasi (maybe a rung or two lower:-))
More than "too classical," i think the shift has been to "romba old-fashion". We're jiving to a different (and dumb) jig these days - but you know all that.

Thanks Mythila - I agree, Poomaalaiye is a wonderful composition, with brilliant vocal counterpoint - where usually, sustained crossing is rare and mostly reserved for special situations where one wishes to bring out one part by doing the following:
placing the lower voice in a stronger register, and the (normally) higher one in a quieter register.
I just didn't think of it was Kalyani, as there are more Anya Swaras in it than Kalyani Swaras ;-)
IMO, Isai Arasi is a one in a million composition by Ilayaraja - in choice of Raga and presentation of the various aspects of Bhaavam, Thaalam e.t.c.... One cannot compare it to "Ennai Enna Seidhaai", as the songs transcend different aspects of Carnatic music. Ennai Enna Seidhaai is more along the lines of a basic Carnatic piece, where Sudha Raghunathan has embellished it with her trademark Brikas!
