Can some throw light on how computerised music is set? Someone like IR composes the whole score in mind first, how is it programmed and how are the instruments selected? How does ARR's and others' style of composing differ? i.e. how do the current MDs improvise over their compositions?
If there is already thread on this please point me to it.

Jag: Music by computers started in the 60s using mainframes. No PCs in those days! University of Illinois was the leader. In the last 40 years there have been several books and publications. Here is one: Music by Computers by Heinz von Foerster and James W Beauchamp. It is a compilation of papers. You get a lot of theory and how to program. I am not sure how deep you want to go. There is enough literature to read. I am not that familiar with IR and ARR. They must have modified what is available to suit carnatic music with 22 tones

Raj,
Thanks for the info. I think I might have touched on something which may be too detailed to discuss on the forum pages. I shall look that book up for sure. I am trying to do something on my keyboard, like sythesizing some loops and add live instruments to them, not that professionally , but just to see how it turns out. I think it is very easy to make music nowadays with so many features available on keyboards.
Cheers

Jag: You are right. I am more of a DSP theoretician! Computer music is only a small part of it. Just to see what is happening I did a search and found a website
www.computermusic.co.uk. It has some tutorials. I did not go through any of them. You might want to try. I used to work in this area long time back designing tone generators. You are more interested in applications of what is available. You should be able to find what you want on the internet.
Good luck! Have fun! Cheers!
