There have been a lot of opinions lately in this forum that Raja should stop scoring music for the movies and concentrate on non-filmy music.
Though I agree that , It would be a great opportunity for Raja to burst out his creative energies, and enhance our musical orientation,
I feel it would be a great loss to Tamil Film Music.
Especially in a period like this when the Cinema industry is surrounded by the so called INSPIRED music directors who excel
only in Plagiarism.
So What do you guys think?

Firstly, from the start of the film industry in India upto today, other than minority market of the carnatic/ classical and devotional genres of music emanating from the Indian continent, the music from films have played an important part in the lives of many Indians, both in India and abroad. As such, I think that IR should always stick with the special bond that he has formed with the South Indian film world and also by the fact he performs excellently and hails superiority in this field. Non-filmy albums can show the other side of IR's talents but such a change can drastically affect his financial standing as it is only for a minority market. Its a wiser choice to be the master of one trade rather than being the master of none.

YES - provided he puts in efforts like in the 80s.
NO - if he makes his fans squirm in embarassment as has been the case lately.

NOV LORD...
I swear to tell you the truth and nothing but the
truth only..
(Ada Kadavule! .. )
I felt wee bit funny listening to Enge Yen Kadhali
(Because of KR's Voice barely audible over the
obnoxious drums..)
But after listening to Kavalai Padhadhe Sagothara..(Kadhal Kottai)
by none other than Deva...
Enge En Kadhali sounded like symphony to me...!!
What do you say?
Ravi(Y)
Rasaiya had real good songs.. Kadhal Vaanile..
and If you are referring to Masthana.. It is really a fun song.
PS: Just a digression.Ravy.. Is Y in your Name to differentiate between you and Ravi (TFMer) or
genuine?

I alongwith 3 other room-mates, hear to the recent tunes of IR before we leave to school in the morning. One guy, is a IR basher, and doesn't like him at all. But when I play one particular cassette with the following collection of songs ..RasAthi RasAthi unnai enni(POOVARASAN),intha pOOvukoru arasan (POOVARASAN),Manam pOna pOkil (KATHAL ROJAVE),oru AAlam poovu...etc.. he used to admire that collection and used to hear it repeatedly. IR's recent tunes are simply soothing to our ears and hearts as well. We guys are far away from India, and whenever thoughts of home prick our hearts, we always look back to Raaja and all his tunes, soothe us to a very great extent.
Particularly, of late, he is using very mellifluous tunes, with full of melody..Devathai...Raman abdulla are to quote a few. So he has to continue with his film music, at least for people like us, who really miss.. our families..friends...tamil movies..etc.. a lot.

Gokul,
Ravi(y) is only for the differentiation.
What about other songs in Rasaiya? Even the more popular Mastaana and kadhal vannilae are just OK songs. Similarly in PonnumaNi except for NenjukkuLLae others were OK or trashy. There are many recent(in the last 5 years) movies of IR that belong to this category (Only one or two songs worth the mention). Don't you see the degradation here when comparing to his hits of 80's?

Your right// That exactly what i have been trying to convince people with// His songs are great and different after 1992//Of track, you arent the lone folk to go bonkers over Poovarasan's Raasaathi//
There are guys who have that song etched in their eardrums// Great songs from that movie//
RAvy
I think Motts was inspired some african beat and i
watched a famous singer repeating those words"mamma kukku izaddE" with a different tune//
Very different song//

ravy,
you should be kidding about the ponnumani songs. it has an all-time excellent of anbach chumandhu
chumandhu. i am yet to figure out a song that comes within 100m of that song in expressing deep
sorrow (i mean only the music). other songs in the movie were ok but really not trashy.

Gokul - What is this reference to "LORD?" I really don't get your sarcasm. Sorry about that :-))
Do you honestly want my opinion? Kavalei padathei sagothara may be bad but not as bad as Yengey en kathali, which is totally unlistenable. Anyway - comparing Deva's bad song with an IR number is not on an equivalent weighing scale! :-))
I have a grouse with some of you - why is it when a song is blatantly copied by IR (as in Masthana) it is alright as he is "inspired(!)"? Let me put it this way. Our friend (no need to mention who) was under pressure to come up with good songs for PDeva to dance to (at least comparable to ARR) and he couldn't find it within him - therefore he had to be "inspired" and that inspiration was one of the biggest blunders in his life. Why? Because he was never made out to be a copycat. That's why. If you find my opinion severe, do not fret - I believe that I am a true fan who praises his best and criticises his bad.
But as any other IR fan, deep inside m heart, I am yearning for those days...
Raman Abdullah gives me hope.

AruLarasan:
Hope you are right about PonnumaNi songs. I listened to the original cassette only once before recording Nenjukkulae (it appealed to me immediately). May be I should have given another chance to the rest of the songs.
I was listening to 'Allah un ANaippadi' from Chandralekha yesterday and couldn't help noticing a music bit that was 'inspired'. Like that 'kuyng kuyng' bit from Aap jaisa koyi (Qurbani) found its way to so many Hindi/Tamil songs.

I think ArunMozhi has much better voice than Unni krishnan,Udit narayan,Hariharan etc and in Arumbum thalire his voice fits nicely.I could conclude that Arun has sung many songs nicely in Raja's music(especially for Parthiban). He started out singing for Kamal in Soora samharam. He doesn't kill tamil like many of these guys like Hariharan,Udit narayan do.He has even sung for Rajini in Veera(Athule annakili).
It's just my personal opinion and no offense meant to anybody.

Raja is the greatest. If you listen "KASI" you will say Raja is back. If you listen "Vanaville - by Sadhana Saragam" in "RAMANA" you will say Raja once again at his peak. Now you have to search "ARR - the Sugandha Pakku". After the entry of Harris Jayaraj you have to ask, "Where is ARR?". Because he scores the same ARR track.

every creative person has a time when his work shows signs of tiredness. raja is jus goin through that phase. let him take his own time to come out of it. i dont think raja is like MSV or any other creator of 1950s and 1960s. he is well aware of the changes and the developments in the music arena and has to do a little homework to adapt himself to the current techno music. thats all is needed. till date there is no one in tamil films who has the mastery over re-recording as raja does. it was evident in "ramana", "kasi" and "bharathi". if my judgement is right raja will once again rise to the top. had you noticed with honesty everyone will accept the fact that AR.Rahman is not the best seller anymore. many of his recent films were total failures in audoi sales... including "baba". within 10 years AR Rahman has burned out. raja ruled the industry for easily 18 years. not a easy thing to do... and he will once again rise from where he left in the late 80s. tamil film music is blessed if that happens... otherwise its ever a loss to film music.
