There is a lot of hype about PM and it's music score, particularly BGM.
The BGM in PM is of course excellent for the trained ears. But the ordinary cinegoer failed to take note of it because the scenes on the screen formed a separate entity. The picturisation was not commensurate with the quality of the music.
Whereas in MUDHAL MARIYADHAI (this movie may be used as a TEXT BOOK for BGM music for DFT courses) the BGM absolutely blended with the rustic environment and brought out the emotions of the characters more vividly. You would have noticed that IR deliberately used only violins, flutes and even the one stringed native violin!
(Kottan gachhi violin)
The music blended totally with the movie that MM was a resounding success!

i think IR`s style of composing music has differed so much compared to those wonderful yester years and now.IR`s music style changed during these years-start(1976-ANNAKILI),(1987-mella thiranthathu kathavu),(1992-PANDIYAN),(1997-KATHALUKKU MARIYATHAI),(2000-SETHU),since then his music sounded never the same compared to those of the 80`s-early 90`s wonderful songs.I think IR is trying to keep up with the present music trend(since the entry of ARR into the TFM arena).

Yeah .... Me too think the same. Though I'm a hardcode Raja Fan, I can't help but admitting that IR's recent numbers don't touch a chord even after few hearings, quite in contrast to his pre-90 numbers. Being a recent entrant (relatively) into tamil film songs (5 years), I was amazed by his compositions even in unheard films like "Patta Kaththi Bhairavan", but the same cannot be said about his recent numbers. Me too agree that ARR's entry may have had an impact on his music. I sincerely believe that IR need not experiment / try to match trends to make fans like me happy. He needs to churn out his usual music and I'm quite sure that will match/better his 70's/80's class.

And Velji .... Sorry for the digression ...But I was watching Kadhalukku Mariyadhai on Sun TV yesterday and must confess it had one of the wonderful BGM's I have ever heard. If they were to take the BGM out, the movie mould have been such a Bland affair. I noticed that for the last 20 mins or so, the protagonist/ other characters don't speak much, it's the music that speak and that helps build the right tempo to the viewer. "Music Speaks" would be a term to depreciate his BGM. It doesn't convey what a character is expected to speak but what the character "speaks by way of not speaking" ... I mean the emotions. Hats Off to the maestro.
