Hi everyone,
These are my observations /comments on Telugu music directors.
I remember K.V. Mahadevan used to be a very popular MD. He was K.Viswanath's favourite MD for most of his films. Of course you must be aware of Sankarabharanam. Ramesh Naidu was another popular MD.
But the one person who took the Telugu film industry by storm was Ilaiyaraja ( one of my favorite MDs ). I can safely say that Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna and Venkatesh owe their superstardom to Ilaiyaraja. Unlike A.R. Rahman, Ilairaja composed music exclusively for Telugu films. Ilaiyaraja ruled the Telugu industry for nearly a decade and he has done a great job at that.
ARR was introduced to Telugu audience only through Tamizh films dubbed into Telugu. Of course he is very popular in Andhra too.
Unfortunately some of the movies for which Ilaiyaraja composed his music for, flopped. It was then M.M.Keeravani came into picture. He was "something" for a while under Ilaiyaraja.
He took off from where IR left off, so to speak.
Now he is ruling the roost with a National Award under his belt.
Then there was Raj-Koti a duo that later split. They composed some decent music for Chiranjeevi's movies.
There are some MDs who are one-movie wonders. Actually this number is growing.
R.D Burman has composed some very good tunes in Telugu.
There are some "Deva" category MDs too:-) Don't remember their names off hand. Hope this does not offend any Deva fans on the web.
You mentioned a Manu Sharma. Never heard of him.
He may be a latest entrant into the bandwagon.
I still think the Telugu audience has a soft corner for Ilaiyaraja.
Sorry, if you were anticipating any technical details on the MDs. I myself am very interested if
anyone has any such info.
Thanks

Kanes: If you want to talk about Telugu MDS in Tamil Film Music, you are welcome to. But to discuss telugu film music is outside the scope of this forum.

Can anybody tell me the latest whereabouts of Sandeep Chautha who was the MD for Ninney Pelladutha. I thought all the compositions were wonderful, especially Kannullo Nee Roopamey ?
How come he is not a household name yet ?

TFM is Tamil Film music but it can also be written as Telugu film music. Both are so transparent that any song can be heard in both Languages. Some times it is difficult to know which one is original. This is because until recent Madras was the base for Films.
Especially the quality and quantity of good songs is much inferior in Telugu songs when compared to Tamil songs(this is after 70's). Most of the MD's who gave very good music in Telugu like MSV,IR,KVM,ARR,Shankar-ganesh, Rajan-Nagendra are Tamil MD's. There was lot of slump in Telugu industry after Ghantasala regime. Most of the songs from Chakaravarthy, sathyam( Though they gave some great hits) were repetitive and lacking melody. Ramesh Naidu gave some great music for movies like Meghasandesam to some great lyrics from Devulapalli. But his number is very much less.
I can say that music in Films was not given much importance until IR entered Telugu industry by composing some straight telugu movies. Some great directors like KVishwanath, Vamsi even MR's geethanjali( Idayathai thurudadey in Tamil) extracted from IR. He changed the scenario in films. In the recent MD's only MM Keeravani( known as Maragathamani in Tamil), Vidyasagar are OK. Koti of broken Raj-Koti duo can be listened for only few songs. Sri son of Chakravarthy doesnt deliver goods. Vandemataram Srinivas is good only for radical songs. Director cum MD SVKrishna Reddy is like Deva, Sirpi. If you listen to his music, you will think that the song is familiar. There are other MD's but they lack consistency.
IMO in Telugu Film music there is dearth of MD's thats why they are importing Deva, Sirpi etc.,

Hai,
Keeravani and Mani Sharma are leading music directors in telugu movies. There are lot more.
S. V. Krishna Reddy is filmdirector and music director and story writer. He will give pleasant music. Of course, he will copy every song form somewhere. That doesn't matter..

Guys:
In fact, in the early days of Tamil Film Music was dominated by great Music Directors and Singers. Even today, we enjoy the songs of A.M. Raja and Gikki combinations. And Telugu FM has given excellent MDs like G.K. Venkatesh, Subbaiah Naidu, etc. Here are the list of MDs in TeFM.
But the current situation is bad for the TeFM, when you compare with what they had in the past. The only talented MD would be A.M. Keeravaani (Maragathamani). But rest of the gang is not upto the mark, of course, they would have made few hits. Keeravaani had lot of hit movies starting from Kshanakshanam - Gharana Mogudu, Pelli Sandadi, Rakshana, Sundaarakaanda etc.
Chakravarthi stole all the Annakili songs and labelled his name. Raj-Koti have flipped few songs from early-Deva-movies. The famous COPY-CAT Bappilahari was on top for some time. (e.g. Gang Leader, Simhaasanam). O.P Nayyar had also scored few films - one of them is Neerajanam - Lyric was by C Narayana Reddy and the songs are great. The Kannada MD Hamsalekha had also tried his luck to get into TeFM. He had few hits (Siddhartha). Lakshmikant and Pyarelal had also done few movies - one popular song is ' idi tholi raathri...' from Nagarjuna's movie.
