Jumbalakka is a great song. It reminds me of Spain and the flamenco dancers yet it has it's own distinct feeling and style. This is a great way to bring in different music styles into India. The songs are available at: http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Agency/4324/tamil.html in RealAudio format. I was impressed by Jumbalakka and now am listening to the rest of the songs...

Hi
Thanks for the info. But can someone help me. I have Realplayer 5.0 version. But it says that it can't play the songs. I am having trouble listening to songs from 'www.geocities.com'. ESK is from there.

I have downloaded a program called X-file get.. it is share ware.. Then I play the songs from my computer.. I think that you also may need RealPlayer G2 for these clips. You should first try and download a song to your computer and see what happens..
The rest of the songs are wonderful!

Thnks Neekesh for the link-The songs are really good. I even liked Niagara song(the male singer-who is he- struggles a lot at the end of 2nd charanam). 'chinna chinna' by MGS is another lovely song. Great work by ARR(no hariharan in this album-what a relief)

The inspiration from Ricky Martin's world cup theme is unmistakable in 'Niagra' song. (Deva lifted it totally in 'Anandha mazhai', that's another story.) Ramki, you surprised me when you said 'liked' :-))
Overall: thirakkaatha kaattukkulle, theendaai are too good songs in this album (IMO).

RR yes even im surprised:)). The song has touches of folk, western and classical and thats what makes it 'likeable'(un aasai manasukkule vengaiyam vilai pole irangavae irangadhu-Vaali kalakkittar). RR I take back the comment i made on Harinis voice.
She sings this song very well(esp the humming portion)
RR did you listen to 'thuli thuli'song??A very pleasant number.

The following is not a review but just first impressions. I have only listened to the songs once.
The first two songs i.e. Jumbalakka anad Nayagra has unmistakable Muslim influences. I find ARR increasingly using religious undertones not only in songs, but also in BGM. (This is a fact, not a complaint.) The beats of both these songs were reminiscent of the pop songs of the 80's.
Who is this Rafee? His Malayala vaasanai is apparent.
Unnikrishnan tries a different modulation in Thirakkaatha. Either you will hate it or love it, no chance for middle-of-road opinions. :-))
En swasa kaatrey, as expected, does its role of a love ballad.
I found Oru thuli a fun song, about enjoying the rain. I can easily identify with it, cos' I love the rain. :-))
I was very happy to see SP Bala's name in Theendaai, padi thaandi varaai, but the prelude.....
ARR has done something entirely new to him, in this song.
Why is there a need for the sexy prelude? IMO, it cheapens the song.
Well, those are my first impressions. I would certainly expect to like it more after numerous listenings (as usual, you may add.)
I would give the album 2 notches below Jeans and one notch below Uyirey.

I like 'thuli, thuli'. However, the other songs of ESK were contrived. I still can't believe ARR hype is growing just with a mere thaiyya, thaiyaa! As unbelievable as IR's prolificity.

Guys let me chip in my observations on ESK.
1. thirakkAtha kAttukuLLE
First of all i should say i MUST buy this album for just one song ' thirakkAtha kAttukkuLLE' . It is melodious, refreshing and very rich in its lyrical content. After a long time i see VM has got in to some superb 'iyaRkai varnanai' . This song is not only the best in the album but will remain one of ARR's all time hits. The song starts with some mesmerising violin prelude and its first interlude with piano pieces are awesome. The way piano ends and violin takes over in the first interlude is remarkable. And watchout for the second interlude with stunning pieces of violin(s)!. I like the melody on the whole and especially in those places where Unni (has done nice modulation !)goes 'aanOm', 'nAnam' . Chitra follows this with some humming that haunts me. As for as lyrics goes, the way VM compares vAnavil to paRavai and 'veedugal' to 'naththai koodugal' , ahahaha!
I started liking this song in just one listening!
Let me give the full lyrics of this song here

2. En swasakkAtrE, swasakkAtrE neeyadi
Refreshing, melodious tune . The background humming (thirakkatha kattukkuLLE tune)
is good. MGS is decent enough and chitra sounds young with her voice. The second interlude , once again watch out, has mesmerising sitar/santoor pieces.
3. theendAi mei theendAi
Nice one. Once again the second interlude is great. SPB and chitra just as usual.
4. chinna chinna mazhia thuzhigal (chakkaravAgamO)
Nice dhAdiyA raas(garba) number. Remeber 'dil bar jane' , this one falls into the same category.
5. Jimbalaka
If you like ceylon pops, you will like this.
6. Niagra
My last choice, harini is being wasted like a chorus singer.
Overall, I would buy this just for no 1. song

Correction! The second interlude in 'en swasa katre' has veena interlude (not sitar/santoor). I think it is balachandar as the album says.
Hello , anybody home , helllllloooooo......
Anybody willing to discuss the album for the sake of music?

Hi,
chinna chinna mazhia thuzhigal (chakkaravAgamO)
The rythm is same as the one in Dilbar Jane(kalaignan).
It is very nice to listen. But it sounds very familiar.
Vairamuthu has given awesome lyrics for this song.
I am impressed.
He writes about rain. It's great.
