Malayalam music scene is undergoing a very big and sensitive debate. As per media reports,KJY's Tharangini Studio has cautioned or sent notices to certain artists like Unni Menon and Madhu Balakrishnan that in case they are singing songs sung by KJY in their stage shows, they have to take a licence and/or pay royalty to KJY/Tharangini. The issue was raised based on some rule of some Indian performance trust. There is a big protest across kerala musical scene. If the same rule applies, they say KJY should pay royalty to Mohd Raffi, Thyagaraja Bhagavathar,Muthuswami Deekshithar etc because he has been singing their songs on the stage. Also, they say that he should pay royalty to the film producer,Lyricist and MD if he is singing his own songs. The person who claimed loyalty fee, they say , is Vinod Yesudas who is KJY's son. I could not see a response form KJY on this yet. What are the views of tfm participants about such a scenerio where a singer claims loyalty if somebody else sings his songs in stage shows?

This is a sad incident which is now snowballing into an unsavory controversy. One wishes KJY comes on record denying he ever meant to charge royalty from stage singers. Singing his songs by the likes of Madhu balakrishnan and Unni Menon is in fact their way of paying homage to his singing genius, and they do it free.
KJY has conducted his proffessional and personal life in a manner that represented kerala's inner culture, and reflected its emotional bonding with artists, be they writers, singers or actors... is he going to break it all in one careless stroke ?.
As an outsider who has lived sometime in Kerala I know how much KJY has meant to Keralites'; he has been Kerala's soul in many respects..
.
I am saaddened by this incident.

Yes, this is one of the most unfortunate incidents in the Music Maestro's whole career. Sri Yesudas should have shown the guts to keep his son in his own place and set things right. I have seen his son's press conference in TV, and guy couldn't even speak proper malayalam. No wonder he doesnt understand the real feeling of the common malayali towards Yesudas. Kudos to Unnimenon and Madhu Balakrishnan for bringing things to light. Hope the controversy ends soon.

In response to the Royalty controversy, I feel if it is leagal elsewhere (inside India and outside India) then, there is no sense in abusing Dasettan or his son Vinod. If Composer and Writer gets royalty then why cant a Singer or even Orchestra player should not get it?
Hope it is clear to Unnimenon, Madhubalakirihsnan and the people who spent time on debating on this controversy

Those assets are registered with rights are entitled to get royalty. For eg. Thyagaraja's, Muthu Swami's music and lyrics are not patent righted or registerd so they are not legally entitled to get royalty. Even Shakespears dramas are also without any rights.
