Listen to "engengO sellum en eNNangaL" carefully. When SPB says "ponvaNNangaL" for the first time, he goes off shruthi. Similar is the case with "saami kitta cholli vechchu". The first time SPB says "saami" he is off shruthi.
I invite DFers to identify shruthi losses in songs and comment.

Fan,
Yep. Nella song "bharath samuthayam".
Thanudya 'Pazhutha' kuralil KJY made
it a varunthable song.;-)
If someone agrees with me, I would
also like to suggest KJY's song
in KN also. His voice is defientely
showing signs of age.
By the way,
Fan--to me the "kelada" song in
Bahrathy also sounded very old. I am
not very sure about Rajkumar
Bharathy's age. Am i right? or
my ears decieving me?

In the beginning of 'Pakaadhe Pakaadhe' (Gentleman) song, when Minmini sings the pallavi second time, she goes a little sharp when she sings 'thazhaadhe thazhaadhe dhaavaniya thazhaadhe'. Then carries the right tune at 'Kizhaadhe Kizhaadhe'. I don't know whether it is a style or she has gone out of tune.

TMS in karpaam maanamaam kaNNagiyaam.......sounded very tired and consequently out of tune at several points. KJY in sangath thamizh kaviyE....when he sings the line oru puram naan irukka....he falls short just like in 'athisaya nadamidum azhagiya thirumagaLO'. A similar shruthi loss in case of Vani Jayaram in 'maNikka maamaNi maalayil' from thennangeetru....when she sings the line 'puthiya vaazhvu pirakkum..'. MS, I do not remember SPB going off shruthi in 'engengO..', I thought it was only SJ , esp. when she starts a charanam with the sustaining note. SPB was off-key in 'Sangeetha jaathi mullai', a rendition that he would like to forget in a hurry.

'Adikkudhu Kuzhiru' song is an ideal example for this thread... 'Shruthi Loss' from the beginning till the end of the song :)

On a casual note.. how can you call originals as
having shruthi losses? Is it possible that the
composers intentionally put such 'shruthi losses'
in songs for some reason? I am saying this
especially because some examples are being given
that shruthi losses are there throughout a song!
I don't think an MD would have slept during the
recording. :-)))

Naveen,
I don't think 'Adikkudhu Kuliru' belongs in this thread. To lose shruthi, you must first have it.

fan, KSS :)
here are few things I observed:
some of the accidental chords make the melody note sound like shruthi loss. Acutally the singer would have taken the right note. It is something similar to 'Optical Illusion'. In 'Oorusanam' song, it sounds like Janaki takes a DemiSemitone!! inbetween a minor and a major 3rd note. 'Oorusanam' is minor followed by a submediant (6th note in the scale) major chord then 'thoon' sounds some note inbetween minor and major!. and 'giru' -
'CHI' is major. (if you begin the song in G Minor, CHI is G Major).
that 'thoon' note really touched me.
