Why TFM Page?? Cant this page have a good tamil name??The page is well-known now and I think the page need be crowned with a good title/name.
2. The surfers today in this tamil page are able to enjoy the criticism, anecdotes, info, etc., about tfm in general and are able to post their ideas, opinion, etc., Thanks to all those who have flexed their grey cells in the process of creation of this page.
3. I find only (tfmpage isaimouni)Raajaraaman's bio whilst browsing the tfm pages. Is there anyone else (the tfmpage group?!) that contributes
for tfmpage building and maintenance? Its time that we know about the other people who are behind the screen (no! in front of the screens, to say!)I wish to congratulate the team!!Good work!! Will you guys introduce yourself in this section?? That includes isaimoouni Raajaraaman!
4. How did tfmpage begin? When, where? (!!??) yen kElvikku yenna badhil??
Again, Why shouldnt you think about a thamizh name for this page?????

After a period of self-exile, I am back with a vengeance!
Romba naaluke TFM pathi yohsenei panner piragu, I have come to the follwoing conclusions:
1. TFM should be renamed as IRM or Ilayaraja Rasigar Mandram
Why? Because every topic becomes a IR topic! Talk about ARR and it turns into ARR vs. IR. Talk about Deva and it is Deva copies tunes from IR. Talk about Minsara Kanavu and it becomes an examination exercise of why IR was not selected as best MD. Talk about ragas and it will revolve around IR. IR using violins, Vairamuthu, P. Suseela, etc., etc. Needless to say BGM, best MD, best era.. Best of dappankuthu, mann vaasanei songs, folk songs, different tunes of IR, flute interludes, IR & SJ combo, BR-IR combo, best MD of India... I could go on and on.
In fact I see a trend - anything that doesn't involve IR will lose interest very quickly!!!
Halwa is a wonderful sweet - it may even be the best sweet from India. Each bite is wonderful and you can write poetries about it. Other sweets perhaps cannot even come close to it. You can have many copies of it like paalgova (Deva?!) But for heaven's sake, you can't have halwa for breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner. And even if you wish to, you can't have it for all 365 days! For crying out loud, give the other sweets a chance and try them out!

3. Starting as Sambar and ending as Jelebi!
Again I am as guilty as everyone else. Examples:
Beginning: Who composed music for Surya?
Ending: my point is KB desreves nothing better than Deva .. after the mesmerising
music of Sinthu Bairavi , Unnal Mudiyum Thanbi all i can say is .???
Beginning: Good movies without great songs in recent Tamil Films
Ending: Now you see 'iruvar'. The less said the better. kadhai - real story, thiraikkadhai - not much diferent from history, vasanam - Suhaasini. Direction mattum thaan Manirathnam. aRuvai thaanga mudiyalai.
Beginning: How many IR songs - Good, okay, poor?
Ending: I have lived in Bombay which I am sure has a larger Tamil population. But still I was not able to keep myself updated on TFM to the extent of living in TN. I am sure you get lesser chances in Delhi (Are we diverting.....?)!!!
The classic case is of course the one that starts of accusing us as web addicts (Deva, IR ella enna anaa yenna?) and ending with our own aratei-adi!

Nammoor:
I do not agree with you fully. I like to believe there are some of us moderates who bring a balance to the TFM Page in content and communication style.
Some of us have already agreed (in a mature manner) that we have our own tastes , and the best we can do is to agree to disagree.
Some ARR discussions do become an IR-ARR comparative analyses. I personally believe we have to make an allowance for the theevira-IR fans as they are trying to come to terms with the need for ARR's presence in the industry while the Maestro is around (similar to MSV's fans in the 70's when IR popped up). I personally believe if a talent is really good, that talent does not need the demeaning of someone else's talents to prove its superiority. While intellectual analysis of ARR's music is OK, emotional Rahman bashing is definitely not in keeping with the class & stature of this forum.
(Sideline: When I was in Cincinnati, had gone to attend an Ilayaraja-SPB concert. SPB & Shailaja sang all those wonderful IR songs. Then right in front of Isai Gnani, SPB talked about how ARR has carved a niche and an identity for himself among the new generations, and went on to sing some good ARR songs.)
As far as digressions are concerned, what do you think is happening here now? Gopal started the topic as a request for TFM history, and then you start talking about it becoming an IR page and I'm responding to you seriously! So, who are the culprits?

Yet another balanced view from you! Salutations. I think that I mentioned in my digressions comment, that I have been just as guilty ...
Anyway, after being away for quite some time, I am able to look at things objectively.

Chapter -1:
I still vividly remember that time(late Aug 95 or early Sep 95).
It was the time web browsing was becoming famous in IISc and
creating homepages was a fad. I had just started writing my
thesis then. So, you know, lot of time is at your hands and
mind goes into everything other than the boring writing work.
I used to be moving closely with my department colleague
Palanivel, who in turn was close to Ravindran. Films and Music(esp.
Tamil) were our common interest and we used to chat a lot about them.
During one of our usual arattai sessions, someone raised a
sophisticated question "what is a homepage?". It lead to some
other chats about film music and finally the idea of
Tamil Film Music Page occured to us. We three met again and
"founded" the TFM gang. We started on a small scale with a few
sections(the idea for the sections actually came from
the Indian Classical Music page personally maintained by me.)
and hosted on a simple 486 PC running Linux(expertix.ee.iisc.ernet.in).
We collected everything we could on TFM(from RMIM, SCT, RMIC
archives and web search) and added some of our own knowledge.
Palanivel (a very good keyboard player) wrote the stuff
for the Song of the Month
section. Ravindran was the layout designer. He deserves most
of the credit for giving a professional look to our
page, especially the Title page graphic in Tamil. (I think
ours was one of the earliest pages on which Tamil text
could be viewed. We should thank sathiya keerthi's brother in law Mr. Kabaleeswaran for
making the tamil font available.)
At that time, the link from ERNET was terribly slow. Being
on a 486 PC, the page was as good as a page only for IISc.
Luckily we had a friend(Venkataramanan) in UK who was
also interested in this idea. We hosted a mirror of
the pages on his machine(www.strath.ac.uk). We invited
comments from some of our likeminded friends, readied
the final copy of the pages and thus... TFM Page Version 1.0
was born. We "released" it on Oct 22, 1995(deepavali day).

Chapter 2:
That was the start. We didn't expect such a good response.
Mails started pouring in encouraging us to do more. We were
really thrilled to get mails from non-Tamilians and even
foreigners who hardly knew any Tamil but loved Tamil music.
Of all the sections, Song of the month was the biggest hit
among surfers. The originality and novelty of the idea
was appreciated by all. Many also applauded the broadness of
the content.
We added few more sections(like Reviews) and continued the work
for the next 2-3 months. The new year(1996) came about and
with that problems for TFM too. My thesis was nearing submission and
rest of gang also couldn't contribute much. That was reason
for the minimal activity on TFM pages from Feb 96. I had
left IISc by then. Palanivel and Ravindran were trying to
finish their theses (which were overdue :-).
The break for TFM came after I moved to
Singapore in search of a job during June 96. Thanks to
my brother, I got an account from Pacific Net(local ISP).
I was thinking about so many ideas during my "vacation" in
Madras that I wanted to revamp the pages. Javascript
was the in-thing then. So played around with it and developed
a new look TFM page. The ISP account didn't have
enough space to accommodate audio files. Santosh@XLWeb, another
tamil music lover, appreciated our situation and was willing
to host the audio files at XLWeb(Madras BBS service provider).
That facilitated the release of version 2.0 during Aug 96.
Ramki also joined the TFM team around this team and helped us
setup the lyrics page.
Mails started pouring in again. We got the first official
recognition for our effort. SinterCom gave us the Best of Asia-Pacific award. Later we got the GoldStar award for best
original content.
After I joined ITI(no..no.. not the Indian ITI), the space
problem was solved. Had to move the pages again, but this
was a more permanent solution. This site was announced
on Oct 21, the eve of our first anniversary. We received few
b'day cards(but not many). The number of hits initially was
around 200-300/day. Later, with increased popularity and
more frequent updates(thanks to Singai/Malaysia radios), the
hit frequecy started soaring. Roughly,
Dec 96 - 700/day
Jan 97 - 900/day
Feb 97 - 1200/day
Mar,Apr,May 97 - 2000/day (sort of saturated because of the slow
link)
June 97 - 3300/day (new T3 link was intro-ed betwn s'pore & US)
July 97 - 4100/day
Aug 97 - 4400/day
(Sep 97 is expected to have a dip because the link has again
slowed down, as you might have noticed.)
Thanks to all TFM page fans for making ours one of the most
popular Indian music sites on the net with your continued interest.
A plan for version 3.0 is in the offing. But we are short
of resources to make it happen. If we get sponsors, we plan
to work on this and release it possibly with a unique domain
name.
Hope to have your continued support

A heart-felt "thank you" to you and your team from me and my husband, who are major fans of the TFM page. You had mentioned you are short of resources to make Version 3 happen. What specific resources are you looking for?
- From: Rajaraman (@ 192.122.135.224)
on: Fri Sep 19 00:16:52 EDT 1997
Mainly the time. We have been thinking for
long to revamp the current version and
introduce search, push, etc. But the offical side is
taking all our time. (I'm
planning to buy a PC for home. Maybe appo konjam
time kidaikkalaam.)
Also we are thinking of moving the pages to a faster
server. Then we can better present the
site with more audio, images, etc.
( The movement might happen soon because I'm uncomfortable
that TFM these days is taking a big chunk off ITI's
webserver speed. ) We also feel it'll be good if we get
a unique domain name. As you can see, all this will
involve $$$. We are trying to get commercial ads on our
site as one source. (also looking for other sponsors.)
Don't know when this will materialise.
If you know of anyone who would be interested in this
deal, pl get in touch with me.
Thanks

My husband and I would like to be of help at the resource end, since we'd like to give something back in return (even if it's not large enough). Additionally, the potential sponsors could be from the Thamizh movie field itself-- Do you want me to put some feelers out among my Kodambakkam contacts? Who else do you see as sponsors?
(On the flip side, do you have any concerns regarding the page becoming too commercial?)
- From: Rajaraman (@ 192.122.135.224)

The cost for initial setup comes to about $400
and for domain name registration $100/yr.
Anyone who can sponsor such an amount is
welcome.
We want to be commercial enough to comfortably
manage the monetary aspects of running the
site.
Thanks
