I found that there was a thread on kannan pattugal in the forum. That is understandable, since there are many songs on Krishna and also Devi in Tamil films. What about Shiva? I can think of the following:
jambulingamey jatadhara (Kasedhaan kadavulada)
neeye unakku enrum nigaraanavan (Bale paandiya)
om nama shivaaya (salangai oli)
Is this just a vague theory or would it be true to say that shiva is not as celebrated as kannan or devi in tamil film music? Why would this be?

Following are the shiva songs on TFM.
siththamellam enakku sivamayame - from Tiruvarutchelver
samo mahadevaa... - first song in Thiruvilaiyadal
illadhadu ondrillai - another song in Thiruvilaiyadal
Aadhi sivan thal panindhu - Thivarutchelvar

chandrasekhara isa - bhaktha ravana
sivaperuman kripai vendum - some MKT movie
aandavane illaiye - rani lalithaangi
isaiyaai thamizhaai iruppavane - agathiyar
munnam avanudaya - parthiban kanavu, agathiyar
This last is a devaaram. I'm sure there are many more in films.
agathiyar, thiruvilayaadal, thiruvarutchelvar, pattinathaar, thiruneelakandar, sundaramoorthy naayanaar, nandhanaar etc probably have several more. Didn't KBS sing a song at the end of thiruvilayaadal about sivan?

These are all great songs. Actually, i was thinking more about non-historical/mythological movies where you would not HAVE to have a song about shiva. For instance, "jagamey manthiram, shiva shambo" in Ninaithaley inikkum. Maybe songs about shiva are not picturised as often because shiva is not a romantic figure like krishna. So you cannot have songs with the hero-heroine imagined as krishna and radha. On the other hand, it may be more logical to have the hero or heroine sing a song to shiva when they are in trouble/depressed/afraid/angry. But usually, in this situation a song to devi is sung! For instance, 'poojaikaga vazhum poovai' or 'raaga deepam etrum neram' or 'indha natagam andha medaiyil' etc. Again, is it because there is a general impression that the chances of receiving help from devi (female figure) are greater?

amritha: You'll find a lot of songs addressed to murugan/kannan/devi since these are considered to be more approachable gods (devi = mother, kannan = child/lover/philosopher/..., murugan = warrior/protector).I think Murugan stands in for Sivan.
