When Balamuralikrishna, was asked in one of the interviews if music can be taken up as a profession, his answer was a straight 'NO'.He leads by example by saying that though his sons have learned music they have not taken up music as a profession.Reason - Creative process being taken over by commercial elements. We are left with a catch 22 situation. If one takes up film music completely his vision could get diluted as compromises creeep up.Raja once mentioned ' it doesn't make sense in saying I am going to compose music tommorow' as composing has to come naturally and not time frame driven. This has left us with many a talented musicians( performers) putting a part time ( half hearted ) effort resulting in mediocre music. What this has resulted is the so called ' MD's' , who have just monetary goals, without any artistic pursuits make good of the situation. Can one keep his artistic pursuit going at the samt time stay alive in this market ??

Taking up music as a full time profession in India is not easy. I remember reading somewhere how musicians are not so `hot' in the marriage market - a case in point, how musicians are normally viewed in India.
ARR ( I am not starting another war here - ) may be one of those rare youngsters who made it big. We know the struggle of most of the MDs and musicians.
Regarding compromising on quality and doing a half hearted attempt, those doing this cannot expect to survive for long.

hi krishnan,
its surprising that this question has come up in this age when qualified ACs like Sanjay Subramanium are taking up to classical music full time and there are enough examples of this genre. with sponsorships and overseas trips now part of the game, the monetary component appears to be taken care of.
now coming to film music, we have had artistes who were professionals for decades and had nothing else to do except make music. this category is fast dwindling because of the advent of electronic composing which does not call for a big orchestra and this makes the question of a career relevant. however there are different avenues for the talented, namely tv serials, cassettes et al to fill up the time left over.

sir,
I strongly believe that nothing is impossible in this world. one must have the confidence and the required dedication to go ahead. To have an ear for music is God- gifted and if one has the required opportunity then he can create a niche for himself. Therfore music definetly enables to live our lives better and probably in a more meaningful manner.
