Is it a right way to do so, though it sounds good. It looks to me that Unni has struggled to keep up his part compared to B.J who has sung her part effortlessly.

There is nothing wrong when a composer composes a tune which does not adhere to orthodox set rules or tonal movements. In composition, there are no set rules. As long as you go with the flow, and it's acceptable in tonality and harmony, your're fine. Music is more of feel. Only certain people have got the intuitive creative 'feel'and correctness when it comes to composing. You can't expect to know everything about music and start composing successfully.

This song sounds similar to Deva's 'Singham Nadaipotu..' from the film 'Batcha'. Can you confirm this?

Ramani, as long as it is great to ears, do not bother about the carnatic illakkanam. Music is for enjoyment not for dissection. But it is ARR as opposed to IR who gives different ragas, variku vari in the same song. That way you should appreciate ARR for letting us exposed to many different ragas.

ChandraSekaran
Are you paying a compliment to ARR or
taking a dig at him (different ragas variku vari).?
There is a great enjoyment in dissection too.
Especially Music!!

Vaapas. ARR handles only a few ragas repeatedly and mixes. He uses, Sankarabaranam, Kedaram, Kafi, Kanada, Naatai, Dharmavathi, ShivRanjani, Sindbhairavi. Except few songs (excellently handled Dharmavati without any mix in Ottagathi Kattiko) all others are mix of two or more ragas. IR has also slipped like ARR in some of his songs, but those are not transparent to common music listeners. Dissection is good for music learners, but not for listeners.

I want to know one thing. I know that Raja's music got more melodious and classical based after he started working with great classical artistes like T V Gopalakrishnan (from whom Raja learnt a lot of carnatic music). I do not know if ARR (or for that matter Raja himself) choose the Ragam first and then compose the song for the situation OR they just compose and people like us fit the same in to the nearest Raga (or Ragas as the case may be). I am sure in old days, musicians like KVM etc. tuned and composed songs in perfect carnatic ragas like "Marainthirunthey Paarkum" (Tillaana Mohanaambaal - Shanmughapriya) as well as Maanavan Vanthhnadi (Thiruvarutchelvar - Kalyaani)and Thirumaal Prumaikku (Thirumaal Perumai - Ragamaalika). Is this style being followed still ? I have my own doubts. Anyone can contribute to this topic ??

Ramani, have you gone through Srirangam Ramakrishnan's article "Classical Ilayaraaja"
Articles 1 to 15? I think you can get some info from those articles relating to your aforesaid
question.

Without getting into the "isai ilakkanam" Unni has sung the song more melodiously and with feeling, versus B.J.'s technically correct but unfeeling rendering of this beautiful song.

for that matter if you look at ennavale till the line kadalenral perum avasthai enru it is in one ragam and the words kandu konden is a diff ragam.cinema music has the license to do that.jayashree has sung the song quite beautifully and the background particularly at the end of the anupallavi and charanam is superb
