I am totally amazed at Ratchagan's songs. All the 8 songs, complete, perfect and never before heard types. Each different from the other and each song a capstone achievement in Indian film music.
Particularly the songs: POGUM VAZHI ILLAI KATRE, and KANAVA ILLAI KATTRA.
ARR has won the respect of one of Raja's devotees. Nenje Nenje reminded me of Kanne Kalaimane (KJY) but simply beats the latter song.
Mercury Pookkal is the most innovative sounding song ever as much as it matches wits with Mudal Mudalaga Kadal duet Paada vandhayo (SPB, SJ).
This is the first time, I have ever enjoyed more than 5 songs in a movie. Here all 8 of them.
ARR has finally arrived. Man, what a departure from those Bombay, Gentelman nonsense.

Nitin,
Its too much.. Please dont compare Kanne..Kalaimane with any ARR song..If U want to slap IR please do so but dont do this one..U could have taken a much better example than Ratchagan atleast..

Gokul and BS
I am not slapping IR. In fact, I am throwing up a lot of criticism, because he is like God, smiling and accepting the complaints, and knowing when to give what the music lover needs in a measure far beyond imagination. If he happens to see these comments, he will be least hurt because he has done thousands of different stuff that no one can ever emulate.
What I am saying is, today if he wants to compete and continue he needs to find a contemporary sound pattern to compete. I am not asking Sivaji to be a Kamal or a Rajni.
Music is presentation of sound as Raja himself has said nothing but wind. I want IR to break out of his set pattern and style and come out of the classical, symphony, folk stuff and go pop, rap and jazz. Is it something bad? We want to see his version of contemporary popular music.
I will continue this discussion, later.
BTW for Sanjay, Bombay's songs were like water in oasis in the Sahara desert, where Mani Ratnam sells! Tell me which songs made any musical sense? I am comparing Bombay with any of Raja's movies and ARR's Ratchagan, MK and Iruvar.

Nitin:
I just want to remember u that IR has done every
possible type of song. I remember few of
them now.
Here are some of IR's contemporary music:
1) Oru nAl antha oru nAl : dEvathai - pop
2) kala kala maga : punnagai mannan - jazz
ennodu pAttu - udaya geetham.
Hey U U come to me - anand
3) many songs : - disco (e.g) "nAn thAn sahala
kalA vallavan".
4) enge en kadhali - dEvathai - rock.
rathiri nerathi - anjali - rock
5) mAlaiyil yaro - blues
6) "love pannida thAn intha park" - "sound of
music" kind of song. ARR has one song
in this style in MK.
Before ARR tried IR experimented with all these styles.
I do not remember any rap song. Some of these
classification u may not agree with me. IMHO
they fall under that category.
Well! i can't understand ur logic saying
"Bombay" is a crap and "ratchagan" is good.
IMO bomay was 10 times better. Only good
thing in "ratchagan" is that u feel that u have
not listened this tune earlier. He tried hard
so that it won't look like one of his earlier
tunes.

Ravi:
are you referring to this song from "Nandavana Theru"?
Nadakkuthu Nandavanam, Nandavanam;
...........
Adhikkanum Sightu, Athu Namma Rightu...
In the beginning of this song, there is an "opera-like" piece.
IMO, IR had attempted some rap-like songs in the following movies:
in "Raasayya" - "Thindukkallu, Thindukkallu", "karuvaattu Kozhambu, Yenn Machaanukku Romba Pidikkum"
in "Poonjolai" - "Pappa Rooppa Dilroopa, Paarkkaatha figurappa" and one-more( that I forget ) and
one song in "Vasukhi"
( may be some more )
These songs, to some extent, resemble "rap" songs but, I won't consider them as great "rap" songs nor have real "rap" beats.

Nandavana Theru had music by IR. Velli nilave was
a big hit song from that movie. I dont think RVU
has scored music for any movie

Amar: I am not sure, but the song is sung while they roam about in a car (I think).
bs: RVU has written lyrics for a lot of songs in his movies. incl. all songs from ponnumani, kizhakku vaasal, a few in singaaravElan (innum ennai), chinna goundar etc. He has even written the songs in a movie which he didn't direct. (Ramki help :)
