Listenin to Radio SriLanka in the late 70s i used to hear one song that just awed me on first hearing itself unconditionally. As my musical knowledge deepened, widened and heightened, this one song mystifies me even more today even if the memories associated with it is very vague.
It is its sheer beauty and a spectacular style that it stands out all by itslef among so many other favorite mystical compositions of mine.
Like Bach' Taccato & Fugue in D Minor (the Strings/orchetral version) that gives me the creeps, this song by none other than IR has an outrageously unusual prelude and tune, giving off a fantastic buoyant mood:
"Ilankiliye Innum Villankaliye" in KamalHasan' Sankarlal with the rightly chosen voices of SPB and SJ. A melodious song with such positive attitude, energy, magic, flow and sound just happened i guess to IR and for IR only so far as far as I know. (And, unfortunately it happened to IR only once I can tell you that much! Atleast it happened as far as I am concerned.)
Anyone has that ONE and only ONE unbeatable song?

Hmm... Cant really pick 1 tamil song... But I do have a one and only Hindi song.
When I was living in Maldives and going to 8th grade, my dad would turn on the radio around 6.14am,and "Tu cheez badi heh mustu mustu" would play... every day promptly at that time, and that was my alarm clock... When I hear the song nowadays, it takes me back to that time, feeling, and I can even remember how the house smelled in the morning!

sorry, i was not clear. it is not about sentiments or feelings at the moment etc... it is about composition. i am syaing this song is impeccable in conception and execution. if u r lookin for one perfect composition head to toe and bewilders you, then my claim is for this song: Ilankiliye Innum Vilankiliye among IR' every other superlative songs and every other song on this planet. What I am syaing is this song just happened and I happened to have a sense of its depth. EVERYBODY GIVE A LISTEN TO THIS SONG ATLEAST 2 TIMES TO SEE WHAT I AM SYAING ABOUT THIS PHENOMENALLY SONG OF THE HIGHEST SOPHISTICATION, CLASS, STYLE AND MAGIC. If you want to know a Western compostion that bears this level of art and "class", style, spontaneity in execution, then listen to Billie Jean of Michale Jackson. Listen to this ONE PERFECT SONG that mystifies me. Anyone ask IR hismelf about this song, he might consider this just another effortless song but definitely the most enchanting composition for him.
tu cheez badi hai masti masti is a great number, romantic also, but not a classy number.

HI Guys !!
I've been a rahmaniac for past 10 years. But my all time favorite song would be a karthik raja compostion " Veesum katrukku" from ullasam.
I know it is a inspired tune from Pocahontas but still it gives me goose pimples everytime i listen to the song.
The violin pieces r good. The lyrics r xcellent.
This song will always have a special impact on me. for guys who have'nt listened to the song try listening to it u'll like it.
Cheers !!
Satissh.

"Ilankiliye Innum Villankaliye" is indeed my one of the most favorite songs. IMHO, what defines this song as best is that it clearly defines IR style in fast paced and prolific composition of music. In this song, the lyrics and music so well put together (if you forgive some funny pronounciation of english words) that I have listened to it over 1000 times and you seem to never get bored listening to it. To me, this defines what a good combination of lyrics, mood, pace and composition, is, regardless of its style.
Heavy use of scores of violins in interludes, elegant guitar and the tapping of some kind of drum at the the end of stanzas..I think IR was so prolific and impromptu in putting this together..at some rare moments of ecstasy in mind...
Incidentally, this is the only song that IR composed for this movie--the MD for this movie is Gangai Amaran.
There are score of IR songs in this style, for example:
Muthan Muthalaha Kadhal Duet.. in Niram Maratha Pookkal...the tempo in this is even faster..
Peri Sollava...in Guru

Satsona & Ravi: this is what i was tryin to get on: you mentioned two other IR' superbly spontaneous, unaffected songs!!!! just two of the songs that knock me out cold, really get completely drained after listenin to Mudhal mudhalaaga and Adhikalai Neramey:
Two other songs that seem to have been IR at his most best elevated state of mind:
Adi Penney Ponunjal
Iru Paravaigal Malai
I would also add:
Pollaatha Aasai Vanthu from Kuva Kuva Vaathukkal, u got to hear this song:
Yes, there maybe a few more songs that showed IR was just in perfect zone of his career and he gave these maybe a dozen or so "THE PERFECT" compositions with "Ilankiliye Innum Vilankiliye" being that rosetta stone kinda of music. For me, it a coming together of all the finest feelings that IR felt all his prime life and like that ray of light strikin at the center of the amalgamation of everything right came this song. When IR attained that blissful state, which may not have happened again like an alignment of all planets in the solar system, I think a manifestation of a similar mental state may not have happened ever. just think about this... Not exaggerating but i am tryin to explain that most elevated state of mind a composer may have had to bring out that one song of his life! It is profound for me to think about this state of mind more than the song itself!!!!!
