Can someone tell about the magical effect of the Major 7th Chord. I understand that only one music composer in the music world has brought out the best melodies because of his ability to use this chord. Has KR/ARR/MSV/IR ever based songs on this chord?

Heaven's Melody,
Can you please elaborate(for heaven's sake!!) on what you have asked? Who is that composer who has used the chord and what is the chord like? Most of the Dfers are knowledgeable only intuitively without any formal music education, so if you give an example as to what this Major 7th chord is, I'm sure you'll get your info.

Maj 7th chord is very common chord in songs which have jazz touch. Please listen to "Vinnor thozhum Annamalai" from the Raja album on "Ramana Maharishi". The song is in the raga Hamsanandi. The song uses an interesting chord with the notes C E G B (F#). This chord is "C maj 7 added #4"
Illayaraja has used this Maj 7th chord in BGM of many films ; in situations where the hero returns back from a foreign country; where the hero throws a party (Meendum kokila - Deepa throws a party);
R D Burman has used Maj 7th in lot of his songs. For e.g, "Jaanae Jaa" from Jawani Diwani. The song is in the key of C minor. The second interlude starts with a organ piece which is set to the chord Eb Maj 7.
I have to dig into Rahman and MSV. I am sure that they would have used the chord.

You do not need any special ability to use these chords. If you are familiar with jazz music or for that matter western classical theory, you would know how to use them. Chord is more than one note played at the same time. This is usually done to add harmonic color to the melody. The more notes, the more harmonic tension. Rahman has used lot of four note chords in "Iruvar" songs; especially, "Vennilaa Vennilaa Vennilavae".

I am told only one Indian music director used the C Major 7th chord in almost all his song such that he could produce extremely complex and longer melodies than anyone else in the film industry. The result was that he preferred not to compose if there was not scope for using the C major 7th chord with the result he was not a prolific but yet the the best Hindi films ever saw. He studied complex western classical pieces right from his childhood, so he knew how to create very difficult melodies. The melodies are really out of this world. But why haven't IR used that magical pattern extensively is a mystery to me, even though IR worked as a guitarist for this genius.
Sridhar thanks i am really fascinated with your reply. What is your personal opinion when you play this melody chord? Isn't it a very distinct and rarely used chord?

HI
I dont see anything special on CMaj7th.
If a song is composed on Hamsadwani or Kedaram or blindly our MDs bang Cmaj7th.
I think Mouna Ragam theme music is a combination of cm & cmaj7 and Aminor (one of Raja's great imaginations), I will go home and play it and confirm it.

Is the song "En Iniya Pon nilavae" uses it at "Ninaivilae Pudhusugam" ? A similar chord is used in "Germaniyin Senthenmalaray" in the lines "Kaadhal Naayagan Paarvai thanthathil Naan enai"
Please clarify.

Guys! Few points to ponder. Firstly, when you are talking about Maj 7th you are talking about S,G,P,N combination on a relative scale. I think the discussion should be the use of Maj 7. When somebody narrows it down to C with Maj 7, are they saying, for eg., E with Maj 7 does'nt meet the criteria ?. BTW if you check Door Door Hum Rahe from Chalthe Chalthe (Bappi Lahiri's first score) he starts with F maj 7, E Maj 7 and D Maj 7, before the pallavi starts. My point is the song does'nt become special because it has a Maj 7 chord.
