Kazhugu - the forgotten Rajni hit

I think one of the best Rajni hits is "Kazhugu". The storyline was ahead of its time, an action-adventure . Unfortunately, it is very difficult to come across video cassettes of this movie in most video stores.Forget video, it is hard to even find audio cassettes/CDs. As a result, few Rajni fans of the current generation have been able to enjoy this movie or its songs. Those who remember this movie are welcome to participate here.

PS- Is there any truth to this movie being copied from "Race with the devil?"

  Kazhugu had a wonderful BGM by none other that maestro! the song which Mr venkatesh has missed out is a beutiful one when the devotees are in the stage of intoxication and the song is "Thedum

  Kadhal Enum Kovil is a gem! (it was probably one of the rarest 'intimate' song picturizations on Rajni)
  Unfortunately it's not available anywhere. Even on the Net. Can anybody help?
  
  It was sung by a lesser known Kovai Soundar Rajan I think.
  
  Ponnoviam!! Wow! What a number? If the sound-track of the movie is re-released or included in a new movie today, I am sure it will be lapped up by the new generation. It was way ahead of its times!

  Kadhalenum kovil was by Kovai Murali I think.

  The BGM as you mentioned is wonderful, especially the title music and the music for the narabali sequences.

  the other song in kazhugu - "thedi vandha dheivam vandathu" - OK song.
  i saw the movie 10 yrs back and first 45-50 minutes went without any action and i thought kazhugu name was very inappropriate - be prepared for the sudden twist and suspense - unbelievable.
  bgm was awesome and it was great after that....
  
  there is another movie "Kaali" with similar violence.....

  There's one BG score piece which used to be there in the LPs (i stumbled upon quite of a few of them and promptly got them recorded in a cassette). The scene where Rajnikant and co see vanitha being sacrificed on the altar - the score has a lot of percussions giving an eerie feeling to the whole scene,with a voice like amjad khan's voice in "enjodi manja kuruvi" chanting some mantra kind of stuff....
  
  Similarly, i found the chase sequence in Johnny in another LP.

  I too like both Ponoviyam and "Kaadhal Ennum Kovil".
  Ponoviyam is the celebration of Rajni style especially when the automatic bed pulls out.. Too bad not too many Rajni fans in their 20s are aware of it.
  For those who desparately want the videocasstette, Raj in Madras sells it.
  Another Rajni movie that came shortly before Kazhugu is "Ellam un Kairasi". There was an unforgettable number in it "Naan unnai thirumba thirumba". Does anyone know where to get the song?

  Best solo song of IR is imho Oru Poovanathilu Vandu Then Kudikuthu. why? the melody, then, the situation (you have to hear this on a sunny morning while traveling in your car in a kind of a suburb setting ) and then the photography for the song. i saw the movie when it released (star theater near chepauk stadium!) , it was a flop for rajinikanth. it was better than garjanai (which was ridiculous)
  
  the other songs are equally good. the IR duet is special.
  
  garjahnai similar to kazhugu had innovative but very simple tunes with a different mood to it. infact, IR did not do songs of this feel for any other movie, my imho - close parallel is for kamalhaasan in Ram Laxman, but with another feeling to it. varuvai anbe is a gem of a song, played by Prem Nazir' son and another heroine. (amazing amazing interludes, sung by a new singer again, like Murali for kaadelanum koyil in Kazhugu)
  
  kaali, all songs are fantastic compositions.
  
  btw, the song ilam pani thulir vidum neram in aaradhanai was that singer radhika, the actress? i remember an interview where it was a totally new singer looking for one chance to sing for IR,but later someone says it was the actress?!!!

  Ponnovium Kandenamma Engengum is one of my all time favourite of Isai Gnani. The song has very innovative music, humming, singing and recording. The song style resembles a lot with "Poo Malaiye Thol Serava...'

  Garjanai had another great song "Oru ooril Oru Maharani" by MV (solo). I always hear that song just for that starting music itself. Unforgettable like many other IR songs.

  Kazhugu is my favourite film since I was bout 5 years old. I am now 20 and live in London. I was born in 1981 and I have been in love with that movie since the day i could remember things.
  By the way, the english version of the movie is called Race With The Devil. (1975)

  Ha !!! Ponnovium...What an amazing song.
  
  Many wrote about this song in this post, but guys have you noticed the build-up that IR does in this song? It starts with the "Thadha thadha thadha...humming before the Janaki's beginning and then the start..!! So perky and it just throws you in to exuberence..Should be classified as one of oustanding classics...
  
  I can't think of many song that have such a build-up. IR has done many songs in such style.
