I have attempted to translate the article, as best as I could. Needless to say, the original reads better. If there are any mistakes in the article, they are all mine....:-))

AUTOGRAPH - A. R. RAHMAN

One fine morning, two months ago, a newly-released
cassette almost changed the Indian national anthem!

AR Rahman sang Vantheeeeiiiii Maatharam; and the
words started appearing on car windscreens, doors
of houses, T-shirts, caps and almost everywhere else.

"Aaah, but I am not trying to change anything.
I just sang the song with..... lots of cheer!.
That's all......" says A. R. Rahman.

Before you can write him off as a don't care party
judging by his ruffled, shoulder-length hair,
his clean-shaven look offers an alternative view.

Although he has received two national awards,
the music champion doesn't even exhibit
them on his showcase. AR Rahman is a real homely person.
If he leaves his house, it would be to the mosque for prayers.
Or, if directors like Shankar or Maniratnam kidnaps
him to Australia or Seychelles.

"Besides the grace of God, what could be the reasons
for your immense success?"

"I believe there is nothing else but God's grace,"
he replies firmly. "One can be a big creator or one
can be very hard-working. But to bring out these
qualities, one needs the right time and opportunity.
I believe there is a unseen force behind these.
Singing praises when a movie is successful and
condemning a bad movie are merely human actions.
In my opinion these are pre-determined things."
Looking heaven-wards, he says, "All are with God's blessings,"

"Talking about signing autographs, I do not feel
anything personal about it. At one time, I used to
only sign on the payment vouchers when I got my
salary from the studios. After the release of Roja,
I used to sign autographs with the phrase
with lots of love. I do not know how to
speak or write a lot. My language is different. ..."

"Is there anything more sorrowful than the
whistle of the train or more happiness than in
the saaral* of the rain?"

"I only know music. I communicate with my
fellow-human beings with that. That is sufficient for me."

Appropriate words.

"I do not worry whether people forget me the
next year or whether I will live on in their memories
for another fifty years. Let us just simply do our work."

Like computer graphics effect, AR Rahman has
made his mark quickly.

* saaral - there is no English equivalent. Saaral is the rain water that is sprayed on you when you are under some shelter. As in, "Stop playing on the varendah and go inside the house or you will get the saaral." Makes sense?? :-))

Yes, ARR is a good translater. Most people don't listen to all English songs. So, with the help of Vairamuthu, what he does is just translating the music (add/delete, cut/paste) into tamil by adding some thevaram in interlude.
I am still very pleased with his first album,
ROJA. Undoubtfully, that had something speacial.

I checked in one music store yesterday, while purchasing Kaathalukku Mariyaathei album. Apparently Jeans was supposed to have been released last week. But there has been no sign of the album and no further indications on when it would be released.

Let us just hope that it's worth the (anxious?) wait....

Neekesh 'saath rang sapne'is more a remake of 'themmavinkombathu'(Malayalam)than Muthu.Though Muthu was based on the Mallu original it had lot of changes. Imo The songs in 'thenmmavinkombathu'was better than Muthus songs.

Hi ! I'm a new entrant and a die-hard ARR fan. I know this is a tamil song disc forum. But has anyone listened to "Kabhi na kabhi" album of ARR's ? It has a brilliant remake of "Anjali Anjali" from Duet sans the sax. Nowhere in the song is one reminded of the original score. It's brilliant and speaks of the MDs calibre.

Nadeem Shravan have already copied ARR's "Thilana Thilana" song from MUTHU in the hindi movie,JUNG. The the song is completely copied piece to piece, and the name of the plagariazation is "Deewana Deewana".
Therefore, I would not be surprised if they again copy ARR's songs.

I think I can shed some light on Thenmaavin kombathu......

The MD's (a duo) got a State award for this movie,but there was a lot of controversy about it as some of the songs in the movies were allegedly "copies"..

One song that I know which was surely copied is
" Maanam thelinje ninnal..." from IR's "Aasai adhigam vechu.." from Maruppadiyum.

You are right with regards to the beats it is different, but song as such is note by note copy illaya, Is Rahman running out of good tune ? I don't understand why he has to reuse tunes...:(

Recently I heard to the other two songs in the USA released Vandhe Maataharam, In those two one Maasoom looks like a new tune, but the other song Musafir is again a repeat of Gentleman's Ottagatha Kattikko I just couldn't follow the lyrics, it has a mixture of Hindi and English, the music in the end is very noisy :)

Monalisa is the dubbed tamizh version of Kabhi Na Kabhi. I guess they have dubbed only the songs like Rangeela. I thought they would have dubbed again the same song Anjali Anjali in Tamizh but didn't :) If they had I wondered how it would have been :)

Hi Bhaskar !

So, is there a new song in place of Milagayee, Milgayee in the dubbed album ? Why do they do this ? So much confusion, isn't it ? Although I haven't heard the Monalisa album, I don't think it's gonna be a success, 'coz I feel that "Kabhi na Kabhi" music is very craftfully adapted to Bollywood. It's not the Madrasi kind of music. (Don't get me wrong here. I am not talking the 'N.India Vs S.India' talk here at all.) Esp. songs like 'Yaara dil dhAra' and that Asha's song (I forget which).That's why I was pretty surprised when I found that the 'Anjali, Anjali' tune sounded very right in Hindi. So, how are the Monalisa songs ? You never said anything abt the dubbed version ? And I haven't gone to this TFM addicts topic yet in an attempt to limit my participation as much as possible. I am only a three day old TFM web page addict. Shall go there and check it out anyway.

Your guess may be right. Monalisa may not be heard by more than 10 people in Tamilnadu. This is not new because may movies of the past which have been dubbed into Tamil from Hindi have been miserable flops. People did not know that such a movie/song existed.

'Sanam Teri Kasam' songs which were a hit in Tamil were dubbed into 'paadagan' in Tamil. I doubt whether many people know about this. 'Maine Pyar Kiya' songs which were a big hit in TN were dubbed into 'kaathal oru kavithai'. No takers. 'Rangeelaa' which was a very big hit in TN had it's at least it's songs dubbed in Tamil. Again the same result. If Mona Lisa becomes a hit, it will be history.

IMO, the same song which is good to hear in Hindi, sounds horrible with Tamil lyrics, while Telugu songs are not that bad. Probably because of the difference in structure of Hindi and Dravidian languages. The mistake is NOT with the MD.

Latest on Jeans. The album was supposed to have been out for Ponggal. After enquiries, I was told, that the poster is out (I saw it!) The album will follow soon :-))

Lumped together with the Jeans poster is scene from Kathala Kathala. I suppose the album may be a 2 in one. With Kamal's music taste, we can probably expect some goodies in KaKa. the cassette may turn out to be a good buy.
