I picked up quite a few CDs and cassettes on my recent trip to India. CDs were mostly oldies with many unheard of songs of SPB, KJY, PS + flim songs of MLV, also ALRaghavan, KRRamasamy etc. I shall post details of these songs slowly. New movies I picked up - IR's Chinna Ramasamy Periya Ramasamy, Kaadhalakku Mariyadhai, Vasuki, ARR's Ratchagan.
Here I am going to review a non-filmy album of IR. This is thenpANdi singam - it is going to be on TV. I am not sure whether this is a telefilm or a serial. The story & lyrics is by Kalaignar Mu.Karunaanidhi and directed and produced by iLaiyabhArathi. It *s Nasser in the title role and on the cassette cover it looks like Geetha is Nasser's jodi in the film.
The album begins with an introduction by Kalaignar. He talks about the division of TN into Naadu, Mandalam etc and about vALukku veli thenpANdi singam.
And now the songs :
1. thenpANdi singamadA - IR and chorus
A great adrenaline pumping song eulogising TS.
2. manadhukkOr nimmadhi illai - Devi
This is Devi who sang first in Naattupurap paadal. This songs puts Devi in the big league. A beautiful classical number with great singing by Devi.
3. vil okkum vizhi endRAlum - Arun Mozhi
A bit piece with a great melody. No orchestra or instrumental accompaniment of any sort. When you have a melody as good as this nothing is needed.
4. vArthai ondru ketkiren - Arun Mozhi
The song of the album. A classical song, in the interludes IR uses guitar like a veena - never sounds out of place or artificial.
5. nenjam inikkiradhu - Devi & chorus
Another great classical number.
This is the music which I want to hear from IR. This album is a great relief for me - IR may churn out total junk like Vasuki but with albums like these IR redeems himself. One of IR's best albums.
And the best for the last : Kalaignar's lyrics - what a change from what 'kaviyarasu' diamundu and vaali churn out ! No pepsi-gypsy - naghma-uppuma stuff here. The lyrics are a revelation. What a difference good lyrics make. I hope Kalaignar finds time to write lyrics for movies.
A class act from IR and Mu.Ka. Beg, borrow or steal but grab this album.

Heard both your versions. MPR's obviously has an amazingly better sound clarity. But I am able to hear the song only in batches and not in one shot. Some 30 seconds of the song is heard, there comes a pause of 5 seconds, and the song continues. The Luxmi site gives me the song without interruptions. Why is this so?
Abt the song: Beautuful song. Hariharan has tried his level best not to spoil it. Doesn't shout like 'peNNE peNNE (veNNilavE)' or 'un vArthai thEn vArthathE' (VIP). Doesn't try stupid modulations like he did in 'avaL varuvALA'. But still, it would have been better with Unni Krishnan.
You can't help wondering how is this man able to compose a song which doesn't resemble any of his 3000+ other songs.

"VASUKI" album is Junk. Are you joking?
Cheri baashai is used in all the songs, I think for that reason only you hate that album. Personally I like this album especially the song "KADHAL NILAVE' by Malaysia vasudevan and subha is very good. Tonight I will write the review of this album.
Kasthuri rajavai pali vaangi vittar raja -
This is not true, I think this is the best album for the Kasthuri raja. Kasthuri raja did only 2 films with IR.

The song "hawaaliaa hawaaliaa"(Janakiraman) has
been sung by one Sangeetha. Anyone know her
background? She has a sweet voice.
Other songs in the movie: pottu mela pottu vachu,
kaathal solla vaarthai vendumaa(a copy of
some labamba tune), etc are not worth talking
about. Sirpi has retained his credentials.
This album is supposed to be in the third spot after
Ratshagan and Porkkaalam.

I heard two chEri songs. They were just very ordinary dappaangkuthu. A real bad song I heard was some 'muthammaa mutham thanthA kuththamA' by Mano and Swarna(??). An MD of IR's standards cannot give such songs.
pazhi vAngki vittAr - After a mega hit music for 'nAttuppurap pAttu', Kasturi Raja went for Deva in 'ettuppatti rAsA'. He came back to IR for 'vAsuki'. That is why I made that statement, that too in a lighter vein. I didn't mean it :-)))

Thanks for doing a great job on Ennai Thalatta Song. I listened to luxmi.com and I was not
satisfied bcos it was sounding hollow. You have
done a beautiful job transporting me to ecstasy.
I wish SPB had sung the song ofcourse Hariharan
has done a decent job.
Guys, Did you notice after a long time, IR has
used Violins and Flute together during the stanzas
and his rthym guitar is also very prominent.
Also check the ending of First Stanza (with Hariharan ending with "Vizhi Vaikkiren") and I was expecting the pallavi again.. There Bavatharini goes with the humming of Pallavi alone!. He did similar thing in Kodiyele Malligai Poo where he deviated from tradition of repeating pallavi before the interlude. He has done this again after a very long time.
Rajavin Thalaattu Attakasam! Thanks again MPR.
I'm waiting to grab the CD.

Sorry for posting this to you very late. The problem was, at first I encoded the file using RA single ISDN stereo option. This gives us very good quality sound file but the size will be too large and only good for ISDN connection. That's why I think you had problems in listening it one shot. After two or three days, i uploaded a different file. Did you notice any improvement in accessing? (Obviously this file is not as good as the old one)

Rajan: Thanks a lot for your Kaadhalukku Mariyathai.
Ennai thalaatta varuvalooo is an instant killer. I was impressed when I heard the first few lines. The music is very melodious and simple. This is were IR has his ingenuity to create a melody with minimal orchestration. The tune in between also does not change which is a typical IR excellence. Great song by IR.

Hi, I just got "Vasuki" cassette from India and listened to the songs. Yaarappa Athu, Ithai Total Junkunnu sonnathu? Naan Padam paakkaley, but, ithu cheriyiley nadakkira kathaiyaattam irukku and so how do you expect IR to score for that? IR has done a good job for this film. The music is not "out of the worldly" but good and fun to listen to.
Oru paattuley, Mano, Arunmozhi & Chitra moovarum paadiyirukkaanga, of course, cheri-baashaiyiley, but moovarum kuralai maatti paadiyirukkaanga. Except Mano's voice, that too one in some places, we can not identify the voices of AM & CH. Prrrrramaatham poanga.
Arvind, you had complained about IR scoring for junk songs like "muthamma, mutham thantha Kuthamma" and I think you misunderstood the meaning of the word "kuthamma". The hero is asking "mutham thantha kutrama? where kutrama is said in local-baashai as "kuthama" and it is not "Kuthu + Amma".

Vasuki is not as bad as I thought. It has a lot of madras-baashai but the songs are OK. The songs are most probably in tune with the movie and the situation. But the problem is that it is expected that songs have to be foot-tapping and catchy no matter what the movie is about.

PG & GP( Gopal )
I got "Thenpaandi Singham" songs. I got this from a friend who bought the CD - guys, get this right, okay - for "Porkkaalam" songs by Deva and "Thenpaandi Singham" came with that as bonus songs. Can you imagine this? At one time, CDs were made only for IR's movies and other movies by other MDs tagged on to the CD. But, things are reversed.
Feel like singing "Ivvalavuthaan Ulagam Uvvalavuthaan", "Nanriketta Maantharada", etc., etc., But that is the fact. My friend did not give a damn about these IR songs but I grabbed it because I had read pg's posting( even otherwise, I would grap any IR songs )
I heard it once in my friend's house with the whole crowd laughing and talking. I was not too impressed with whatever I had heard through the chaos. Sounded like most of them were carnatic based. Need to hear it again and then comment.
So, pg, you are not alone and you won't be branded with "TPSingam pg"

TO Amar :
TPS songs are carnatic based. They are not pop, foot-tapping songs : they are not background music. The songs are excellent with superb lyrics.
Listen to them at leisure. The song of the album is 'vArthai ondRu ketkiREn badhil solveer' by Arunmozhi. Just great !
This is not a filmy-score rather the music is for a TV-Series or a TV-film. I am not sure about that. Therefore the publicity is almost nil for this album.
It is surprising that while magazine after magazine is churning out interviews with the Maestro there is very little publicity (let alone hype) for Maestro's films !
- From: Amar (@ worf.qntm.com)
on: Fri Dec 19 17:01:12 EST 1997
pg:
Thanks! I know that TPS is for a TV series and I will listen to it again and comment on the songs. Yes, I wonder at the lack of publicity for IR songs, wondering who to blame!!!
Arvind:
Sorry, I forgot to respond to your mail.
I am sorry if I had offended you. From your message about Vasuki songs, I got the impression that you called that song "Muthamma" junk because of the word "Kuthamma" and that's why I explained that to you.
Umathu "Tamizh" pulamaiyai naan thavaraaga yennavillai, mannikkavum. Porul Kutram Yenru Sonneiney thavira, Umathu Solvalimai, Tamizh Thiramaiyai Kutramenru Kooravillai!
Also, I am not saying that IR is capable of such songs only. Nobody in their right mind would ever say that( I am in my right mind! ). IMO, IR is the ony one who comes up with the right songs for the situations regardless of the pressure in the TFM industry to churn out these "foot tapping, pop" songs. I wouldn't expect IR to compose a song to get such lyrics like
"Hey Babe, Muthamma, Maybe, maybe we can Kissamma;
Ithu Kutrama, roopadaabadabadaba, kuthama, kuthama?
Don't Miss, Hey Miss, Let us Kiss"
for a situation that supposedly happens in a cheri( it can only happen in the dreams, literally! )

Kadhalukku Mariyadhai:-
Finally I got the CD from my local Indian Shop.
This would have been the perfect album of IR in the recent times if only he had junked the last
song "Aiya Veedu Thiranthu".
Ennai Thalaatta Varuvala..
This stands out in its melody
I liked both Hariharan's and Bhavatharini's version. IR's Version is OK except that he sounded
bit strange when trying higher pitches. The lyrics
are good in Bhavatharini's Sangeetha Thiru Naallo.
The Bhavatharini's version and Hariharan's version differ in their interludes. Hariharan's version has the vintage IR feel.Especially the
flute sections are mellifluous. This song flows.
Also IR skips the conventional repeat of Pallavi after the ending first stanza (what do you call stanza in Tamil? Pallavi,Saranam and then?)
Oru Pattam Poochi (KJ & Sujatha).
This song is another example of IR's Orchestration
skills. The tune blends very nicely into a karnatic section. The way chorus is used in this song is terrific and very nice violins.
O Baby.. Baby.. (VJ (who is this?) & Bhavatharini).
This first struck me as the kind KR would score.
The tune is quite hep sounding more ARRish. The
short blast of drums in the interlude is distinctly cool.
Anandha Kuyilin Paatu..
(Chitra, MV,Deepika,Surendar,AM)
This is very tuneful and has neat orchestration.
Especially where the kid sings "Skies are cloudy"
and the way it blends into the song.
The recording is very good. I strongly recommend
listening these on CD.

Such were his songs of the 80s. Now, even he can't match those! I remember the good old days when I would be excited with each release of a new IR album. There would be many surprises in store and new breakthroughs in each album. As Forest Grumps would say, opening a chocolate box....

Can I take the liberty of reviewing some old songs
here?
Recently I bought the Collection of IR songs
called Golden Duets..
It has some real terrific songs..
1.Thenral Vandu Ennai Thodum.. (Thenrale Ennai Thodu).
The Intro piece is by itself a great tune. Excellent violins make this song highly enjoyable.
Also check out the flute with rthym guitar in the
first interlude.SJ and KJ excel in this wonderful
song.
2. Kuyil Paatu - En Rasaavin Manasiley
This is the pathos version of Kuyil Paatu. The wailing flutes and IR's voice add a poignant
dimension to this soga geetham
3. Thennangeethum Thendral kaathum - Mudivilla Arambam
Great tune. MV & PS have done a decent job.The flute in the second interlude is truly enchanting.
4. Vizhiye ViLankondru Aetru.. Thazhuvatha Kaigal
This is another example of how IR's orchestration
skills can transform an ordinary tune into something exceptional. Listen to the second interlude.. Wow! Guitar strumming with veenai and
the subsequent flute seamlessly blending with
Keyboard.
5. Vizhiyele Pudhu Kavidhai Vadithen -
Theertha Karaiyinele
The flip side is Mano's singing. This gets compensated by Chitra's excellent singing. The tune is nice.Orchestration is not all that great.
6. AaLa Asathum Malligai - Kanni Raasi.
IR misleads you with a classical intro humming.
This has terrific guitar and violins.Very stylish
strumming in the first interlude. SPB kills
me with his ease and style. S Janaki would have
done better justice to this song than Vani Jayaram.
7. Mayanginen Solla Thayanginen - Naane Raja
Naane Manthiri.
The intro to this song is absolutely marvelous.
The pallavi is very tuneful laced with magnificient flute. PS & Jayachandran do a great
job.The interludes are songs by themselves.
8.Raathiriyil Poothirikkum Thamarai.. Thangamagan
SPB excels in this great song. The use of violins
beneath the chorus humming in the first interlude
is awesome. Very prominent rthym guitar.Lewd lyrics spoil this excellent song.
9.Anantham Pongida Pongida - SiraiParavai.
Beautiful song. Sunanda & KJ! More use of Veenai.
The stanzas are better than pallavi. Words just flow with the tune.
10. Kangal Rendum Santham Solla... Unakkave vazhgiren
IR was probably toying with synth music. The
intro is horrible but the tune is quite lilting.
MV & SJ carry this song quite effortlessly.
11. Poo Poo Poo - Puthu Nellu Puthu Naathu
Excellent flutes begin this catchy song and the
flutes continue to rule this song. Surprisingly no violins.
12. Onnaa Rendaa Thamarai poo - Thazhuvatha Kaigal
A very underplayed song. More prominence is given
to what the song has to convey (VijayKanth is
jollu vitting for Rekha) than music. Simple tune
with S Janaki & Jayachandran cooing to each other.
Skillfully written without sounding lewd.
13. Paatu Thalaivan - Idhaya Kovil
Excellent rthym in this song. The flow of music
in this song is exceptional, where the interludes
blend with the stanzas. Another gem from SPB & SJ.
14.Kallukulle Vantha Eeram Enna .. Manidhanin Marupakkam
Try singing this the last part of first stanza
without pausing for a breath. (starting with Neelam pootha Kangal) IR has really left SJ and
SPB panting for air in this song. Excellent song
with superb rendition by SPB & SJ.
15. Poovile Medai - Pagal Nilavu
Again the smooth flow of music is very nice and enjoyable. Very catchy tune with superp intro piece.

I agree with NOV in the fact that apart from ennai thalaata varuvaaya the other songs are not as appealing as i expected it to be.I think we have come to a stage where we have started psyching ourselves saying that IR's songs are indeed good etc.the truth most of them are not in comparison with his own in 80's.now there are 2 reasons s to why this may be so.
1. NOSTALGIA
this applies to english songs as well.i still think that what i heard in the 80's were the best both in english and tamil.is it because i was a kid and iam able to associate these songs with my childhood and appreciate them better or were the songs really good?in my pinion they were really good.
2.some of thge songs in the early 80's were strongly based on raagas.(now we can separately start a thread about raaga based IR's songs.)but i feel that the present day songs are not so with a few exceptions.perhaps IR is trying to keep in tune with the taste of the modern generation like
AR?
anyway iam of the firm opinion unless otherwise base their lasting power is very very less.the 'jeevan' is simply missing from IR's song today.
i have noticed this only in the songs that came after 1993.got to do anything with symphony?
even for directors like balu mahendra where one can expect some rich music the songs except for
'enn vetu jannal' were not that appealing.'muthamizhe' looked like listening to
some old tune of his once again.'puthithai' was okay.in devadhai 'oru naal' had excellent and majestic BGM but the song itself was not melodious
and the moaning by SJ did'nt help much.in terms of the tune my best song is'naalthorum'.especcially when kavitha sings in the high pitch it is great.

I do not agree with you reg Kathalukku Mariyathai.
Oru Pattam Poochi (which is based on a raga) and
Anadha Kuyilin Paatu are definitely vintage IR
stuff. Especially the orchestration in Pattam

As far as Devadhai goes, Naal Thorum was obviously
the best song and also Deepangal Pesum was nice.

This song has some excellent guitar beats as well as a beautiful blend of instruments (I'm an illiterate in this subject)..
I hav heard people saying orchestra groups were very afraid to play this song as the range & depth of the instruments cannot be attained to a satisfactory level.. There is one more hit song from this film which I cant recollect now.. I think in this film was released in 1986/87.. Whenever IR is referred in connection with Malayalam I can remember only this.
