  Ramki started this topic to analyse Kannadhasan's verses in detail by different subject matters. We finished "Thathuvam" in a separate thread; Kannadhaasan was a master in that subject. Now, we're moving on to his next favorite subject "Kaadhal": verses covering various aspects such as dheiveegam, sirungaaram, anbu/paasam/natpu, thalaivan-thalaivi oodal, thalaivan-thalaivi pirivu and other related areas familiar to you from Thamizh literature will fall under this subject.   OK. Let me add a great song from 'nenjirukkum varai'. The singer (Sivaji) is in love with the heroine (KRVijaya?!!) who becuse of 'kaalaththin kOlam' marries somebody else, and says that Sivaji is like a brother to her (idhaanE vaaNaangarathu). Sivaji sings this song in the marriage.

  As far as my knowledge goes - the song was given to IR as 'thiraatchai rasam' (Vairamuththu engkirunthuthaan vaarthaigaLaip pidikkiraarO - kadavuLE). He composed the song in Vasantha - a raagam used to signify the evenings. So he asked Vairamuthu to change the pallavi so signify 'evening' and 'anthi mazhai' was born.

  Panchu Arunachalam is Kannadhasan's nephew. He was also his assistant. Because
  Kannadhasan having problem in the hand, he could not write much. So he used
  dictate to Panchu and he used wrote the songs and give to the Music
  Directors. Once what happened
  Panchu wrote "Odam N-adhiyle, Oruthi Mattum Tharaiyle..". Actually it should
  be "Odam N-adhiyle, Oruthi Mattum Karaiyele". After giving the transcript they
  both were out of station and the MSV recorded the song with "Tharaiyle", even
  Seerkazhi, doubt about that, he also sung "Thariyle". Later Kannadhasan
  heared that song and started shouting at MSV then MSV explained the
  situation, Kanadhasan vitta dose Panchuvala maraka mudhiyadhu.

  No one can forget his "maridhirundhE paarkum marmmamena...", "N-alam thaana,
  N-alam Thaana..." in Thillana Moganabal.

  See, K'dhasan was not airing his views
  through film songs; he was just writing the apt
  lyrics for the movie situations given to him.
  Whereas there are sooo many situations in movies
  in which a hero is "kadharufying" blaming the
  heroine for love-failure, situations with
  reversed roles are rare! Whenever K'dhasan got
  such a situation, he gave appropriate lines.
  There are several examples in which he has
  supported the female.
  
  In Vennira Adai the heroine develops
  oru-thalai-kaadhal towards the hero, and, when
  she knows he doesn't love her, she sings:
  nee vaaraadhirundhaal ennai paaraadhirundhaal
  eNNam maaRaadhiruppEn illayO,
  meaning that it was the hero's mistake to have
  shown his handsome face to her and resulting in her
  agony ultimately!

  I enjoyed your thoguppu and perspective on the female point of view when faced with a failed relationship. It is far more subtle and gentle in expression, when compared to the male characters' lines Ramki has quoted--so Ramki may still have a point, not about Kannadhasan but about females' accepted portrayal in Thamizh movies?! The typical movie's female perspective, as you have rightly noted, has been not to blame the hero but to express intense sadness:
  ennai marandhadhaen thendralae , uravu enroru soll irundhaal pirivu endroru poruL irukkum, and ettadukku maaLigayil yaetri vaitha en thalaivan. I don't think the audience of yester-years would have accepted a woman who explicitly blamed the hero anyway.
  
  Also, as we discussed under the Kannadhasan's Thathuvam thread, kaalamidhu song is eternal and applies to today's women too, and possibly men. The only missing element is a high-pressure career because it was written for a home maker character in the movie.

  As we are pondering AruLarasan's question, here's a psychological explanation for Kannadhasan's different treatments of the gender reactions (discussed above by Ramki & Sathiya Keerthi) to the same negative situation. Excerpt from some sociology studies: "Males and females tend to react differently when faced with failures. A typical male reaction is to look for causes in his external environment to attribute the failure to, whereas the typical female reaction is to look inward to identify causes for the same failure. There will be some exceptions, as with any general rule."
  Kannadhasan was definitely an astute student of human behavior! The lines for the heroes mostly blame the heroines, while the heroines sing tragic songs, reflecting their feelings (and we, the audience, love both.)
  
  On a lighter vein, here are some Kannadhasan's verses we enjoy for their mischievous romance:

  to women folk but i liked to point out his
  feelings towards kaadhal tholvi by any aanmagan.
  
  As kanchana pointed out Females do tend to analyse (or blame)themselves for any failure they meet with. Kannadhasan has brought out this point in many of his songs .one good example is

  Aathiram enbadhu peNgauLukkellam aduppadi varaidhanaE, oru Aadhikka nayagan sadhikka vandhal adanguthal muraidhanaE from Nizhal Nijamagiradhu.
  
  I hope K'dhasan reflected the character's view and not his own. But he drew a lot of flak for writing these sexist lines.
