Reading a collection of Thamizh folk songs (“Naaluvagaip Pooveduthu,” by Su. Sanmuga Sundaram) revealed to me the source of many TFM songs. Whether the use of established folk songs in TFM lyrics should be considered plagiarism or propaganda is not my concern. I wish this thread to be a paean to the riches of Thamizh folk songs; and if this sparks some interest in your discovery of folk songs, I would’ve done better.

Thanks for the input guys. This is all news to me.
OISG,
I am aware of Karayellaam Shenbagapoo, it's one of my faves, even the title song, "kaadellaam pichi poovu" sounds very folksy. Do you know if any other songs in "Thanneer Thanneer" were original folk songs? I've always had my doubts about the wonderful thaalaattu:
"kannaana poomaganae kannurangu sooriyanae"
It's a great lullaby in a rare MSV-VM combination.
Also a rustic song from "Magudi" by IR must have some roots in a folk song.

I guess my question has already been asked and answered. Thanks for the flashback link.

Ramki- thanks for reminding the beginning 'Maanathile meenirukka' (Udhayam varugindrathey)-that prelude was sung by GK Venkatesh.
bb- that old 'Odugira thanniyile' (Seergazhi-PS) was from 'Pillaikaniamudhu', I think.
The full song 'Eru mayil' is as follows; (there may be some errors- the 'Odhuvaar' in my village temple used to sing it!)):
Eru mayil eri vilayaadum mugham ondru
Eesarudan gyaana mozhi pesum mugham ondru
koorumozhiyaargal vinai theertha mugham ondru
kunduruga vel vaangi nindra mugham ondru
maarupadai sooranai vadhaitha mugham ondru
Valliyai manam puriya nindra mugham ondru

Vijayalakshmi navaneedhakrishnan acted with sithara in one movie called "Pudhu pudhu raagangal" (MD SARajkumar) which sank without a trace... i think the movie had most songs by VNK herself.

Thaneer Thaneer songs frequently move back and forth from "age old" folk to "vadugapatti" folk.
But the song "Megam thiraludhadi" too has too much base folk wors.I am sure about the origins. It was by KD.
Megam thiraludhadhi minniruttu kattudahadi
innum karukkuthadi eesana moolayile
mandhayila mariyaye malamela mayavare
indirare suriyare eppa mazhai peyya venum.
mattamalai movaoothu velavare
mazhayai erakividu vantha pasi theerthuvidu
ammadi muthumari un kannu patta masathukku moonu mari
The first para looks very much folk with "Indirare suriyare"-i have heard them elsewhere too!
But the II stanza looks out and out KD creation.
Kannana ppomagane by VM also has this loop.
oothumalai thaneere en ullangai sakkarye is folk(sorry! i can t recall the source immediately).but "nee naan petha thangaratham idupil ulla nandahvanam" has Vadugapatti written all over it.
The last MSV song has ususal VM stuff" Pongal vangi thinnuputtu sami enga pochudoi"
Thazhayam poomudichu thadam paarthu nadai nadnathu
Ennai eduthu thannai koduthu poonavan ponanadi
I firmly believe that these two have folk origins. Can someone clarify

OISG,
Some songs in "ThaNNeer ThaNNeer " were by KaNNadaasan. The lines mentioned by you:
" Vote(u) vaangip pOna aaLu veettukkuLLa thoongiyaachchu! Ponga(l) vaangith thinnup pOttu saami enga Odip pOchchu?" are from " thaNNeer! vandha pinbu maaRum engaL kaNNeer!". I am not very sure if this was by VM or KD!
