Hmmm ...
I would say the first person in the world who did fusion was Shri Muthuswamy dikshidhar, one of the trimoorthis of carnatic music. His (some)krithis were ambivalent. They could be recited in an opera or a carnatic concer. When I mean recited, an opera with only western instruments and a carnatic concert with only carnatic instruments. Such was the mastery and experimental nature of his compositions. In film music, fusion is a continuous phenomenon and as IR and ARR had better access to various styles of music, they are definitely doing it with relish. I would rate them both as good. IR manages to indianize western pieces better and ARR westernizes Indian musical forms better. It is kind of "reverse" swinging the old cricket ball. IF IR does the away swinger with the old ball, then ARR does the other way around, both with devastating effect. Pity is that other MDs like YSR, VS and HJ haven't mastered it completely. KR is fast catching up there if Kudaikkul Mazhai is an index to go by.
Thanks,
Jaiganesh

hi!
DIGRESSION:
KR has two more fusion pieces to his credit.
1. A solo by Asha Bhosle in the soundtrack of the cross over movie "Split Wide Open" directed by Dev Benegal. I have read some good reviews for this track. he is supposed to have done extensive fusion of Carnatic and Jazz in this. I haven't heard, but am desperate to get a hand on that album.
2. There is an album of Ila Arun called "Haule Haule" again interesting folk music fusion by KR in that.
given these things, I feel that KR must be extremely unlucky or lacking marketing abilities of YSR. Comparing the fusion he tried in Ullasam "veesum Kaatrukku" song , YSR's fusion attempts in Nasser's "Popcorn" pale in comparison.
Any ways, YSR is in top and KR has to bide for his time. thats how things are right now.
END DIGRESSION.
Right now, Guitar Prasanna seems to be the only guy who is hell bent on fusion. His albums are excellent attempts in fusion. ARR's LoveBirds , insignificant it might be, but had Prasanna's electric guitar bit(electrifying) in the "Sambo Sambo" song. The entire piece was pure carnatic, coming in between a western rock style song. I was terribly impressed by both ARR and Prasanna. Then I went 2 a carnatic concert by Prasanna in naradha Gana Sabha. Man!! I never thought that you can churn out divine Anandha Bhairavis and Reethigowlais from that much abused Electric Guitar!!! Hats off.
On a related note. This piece of ARR experimentation was not well received both by Tamil and hindi audiences. Very sad!!
back to you guys!!
Thanks ,
Jaiganesh

Hi!
one more fusion example!!
There is a soundtrack in the movie "Batman Returns" by U2. It is a perfect fusion of Metal and WCM. The song starts out as an out and out metallic and then morphs slowly into a symphony type piece with host of base violins ending the song in a grand way!! Initial days of MTV in India, I used to be glued to it on DD metro in the evening.
thanks,
Jaiganesh
