Pon Megalai by Illayaraja

Yesterday i saw an audio CD of film named "Pon Megalai" music by Illayaraja. It had 14 songs and all the songs are sung by female singers Sudha Raghunathan, Bombay Jayshree, Bhavatharini and Sadhana Sargam and it seems to be purely Karnatic based. Have anyone heard the songs ...how is it...let me know to buy the album

  5 songs r frm the unreleased movie 'Ponmeghalai' while the other 9 r collections frm some earlier movies . go for it definitely a good buy.

  wow it is yet another great album from IR.
  
  all the songs are great.
  
  Among the 5 four are IR's trade mark karnatic songs and 1 is a folk number
  
  and other 9 tracks are from his earlier movies
  July ganapathy, Solla marantha kathai, Ivan

  hey i happened to listen Parasuram by the genius A.R.Rahman sometime back...wow wat a refreshing album....man it was great........all the songs instantly got into me............. it is yet another great album from ARR...the vintage rahman is reflected in every songs...on the whole it is a must buy for an ARR fan as it contains the super hit songs of the century

  this is an excellent buy. I got it for just Rs.50 and it had some nice songs from Ponmegalai, Ivan, SMK etc..

  If you can get past Sadhana Sargam, there's really a lot to like in "Aalapani Seyyum". I couldn't:(
  I liked the Sudha Ragunathan, Bombay Jayashree songs a lot. But, my favourite song is the female duet "Veda vaani". If you liked Ivan's carnatic numbers, you'll love this album. The carnatic style composed here seems to be for bharatanatyam dances.
  
  Someone was bemoaning the fact that IR's classical output doesn't match the golden standard set by the earlier masters KVM & MSV. A few more albums like this, IR IMHO will truly have a resume filled with classical numbers that will speak strongly for his case.

  sriram, many thanks for your brief review.
  I found 'kannan nee en isai naadha oviyam' in Ivan very good(SriRanjini ). I should look for Ponmegalai when I come to India.
  Ironically, when SS sings ARR's songs technically flawlessly(Udaya Udhaya), she repeatedly flounders in IR's songs
  paatu solli - notice the flat note at the high pitch starting line of charanam 'illamaiyille kanavugalil midhandhu sendren'
  'unnai thedi thedi' - she struggles in this konjipesalam song (which meanders in higher octaves for most part)

But our lament is why have they recently become few and far between.
